what would be your top tunes that work on (almost) any crowd

i mean, not so cheesy as to scare away the young ones, not so heavy as to drive away the old ones, just funky and groovy enough for any party (if course, while mixed in and out of other music depending on the crowd)!

heres a couple that i would regard as that kind of tune

bob marley - could it be love
james brown - get on up
michael jackson (possibly anything from him)
stevie wonder - superstitious
mc hammer - cant touch this
run dmc - its like that

Taio Cruz -- Dynamite

Rihanna -- Don't Stop the Music, S&M

Journey -- Don't Stop Believin' (slow song)

Cupid -- Cupid Shuffle

Usher -- Yeah!, OMG, DJ Got Us Falling In Love

50 Cent -- In Da Club

OutKast --- The Way You Move

your right, Hit the road jack is a classic all rounder

livin on a prayer would be pushin it here

the irish under 35 yrs old crowd would have a hard time swallowing that one unless they had 60 pints of beer first.
alas, we are starting to drink less than that now in ireland :P

Here in CA --- alcohol sales have declined dramatically due to Medical pot and the ability to grow your own!

DJMC

It's legal in 16 states and the District Of Columbia. Not Legal per se (still violates federal law) but you can go to any Medical Doctor (MD) and get a "recommendation" (not a prescription, that violates Federal law). The recommendation allows you to possess up to 8 oz and grow up to 12 plants (in California).

Journey -- Don't Stop Believin' (slow song)

huh? Slow song?

I use it as a crowd pumper! Speed it up to 120 and drop a beat behind it... I mix it in right off of Livin on a Prayer (before the solo).

Top 40.

i know where you are coming from and i have done a few top 40 gigs, but in fairness i would hardly call it music that would please "anyone"

i know tonnes of people who cant stand it, this thread is about those songs which, yes can be found in the top 40 because they are great songs, but will even appeal to people from other realms :)

Sweet Caroline usually works pretty well as does Michael Jackson. I usually play a MJ song fairly early once dancing starts though at one wedding last summer it didn't work and I knew I was in for a long night. It turned out to be my least favorite wedding of the whole summer.

And "Your Love" by The Outfield actually works, too, which surprises me. I loved the song when it first came out in '86 but amazed it's held up. "Come On Eileen" is the same thing.

I think LMFAO may have already jumped the shark.

Whenever you see a song "spoofed" on Saturday Night Live (in last week's Bar Mitzvah skit) -- it almost ALWAYS means that its heading for the Cheese Bin!

Only if someone else releases a track that can become more popular I think...

I'm just glad I finally have a song that gets more requests than I Gotta Feeling.

Foot Loose - Kenny loggins
Everyone form 3 year olds to 60 year olds still hit the floor with this.

When A Man Loves A Woman - Percy Sledge
However, I like to throw on the Micheal Bolton version for more progressive/younger crowds

Maybe it was just dumb luck. But I've been to 4 different functions where maybe 5% could even understand the lyrics. They played Suavemente by Elvis Crespo and the people were dancing their a$$es off. This is in So Cal so YMMV. I think New Day by Alicia Keys + Dre + 50 Cent is a solid all purpose song. And there's a version without the rapping for dj's who won't touch anything rap related. Both songs have a lot of energy imho.
