Hello,

I used to post here as eF-Inq. I made a console for my friend based on one I made for myself back in 2007-2008, for this beauty, I had no schematics.

Sorry for the poor quality image. Made of thick plywood and covered with black carpet. I've yet to paint and finish the thing. I designed it so that all the wires and frills go inside.

Any thoughts?

Oh, it has 5RU section on the left, 2RU section in the middle, 8-9RU for the mixer(depends on model, plus the mixer can be angled) and on the right you have your CD/beer sections. It's designed to hold 2 turntables as well, the Pioneers are there for a good pic, it would look naked otherwise

Good job. That looks really nice. I'd like to see some better pictures though. How tall is it at the turntable surfaces? How about the cd player surfaces? How come you did not angle the cd players? I prefer using cd players flat, but at a certain height, I think it becomes necessary to angle them.

+ rep.

The height in this console is at the moment adjustable(due to the legs being stolen from an old desk), although we did plan on making a commercial(?) version with a friend.

I also incorporated a 45-degree-angle rack on top of the mixer, so that you can place a VU meter(in our case, a compressor) or something similar that you won't be tweaking all the time(It's really cranked up in there!)

EDIT : As for the CD-players,we're thinking bout it! We're a few ideas short though!

As for the height, it stands approximately 1000mm-1200mm tall. Like I said it's adjustable

A great job.+rep.When I built my console,I didn't think of RU sections,or the wiring.good for you:tup:..how long is that table? how can you angle the mixer?I can't see where your VU meter placement would go?I'm looking forward to seeing more pics, when you're finish.

The proper measures are 1510mm width/230mm height(inside)/480mm depth,as for everything else, there are no schematics. It's made piece by piece so there are no accurate measures for the laptop/table pieces. I can make a schematic out of it though.

Angling the mixer is easy, just remove the flush pieces and you're golden. I actually made the mixer section angled but we decided to make it "universal" so that you can fit in just about any mixer, just by removing a few screws. With hinges, it's gonna be awesome.

As for the VU meters, we're thinking bout placing them either above the turntables or..... we did a 45degree rack on top of the mixer so that may be a nice place...

A guy from a well-known business stopped by and gave us an idea of a rack-mountable dimmer T5-light so we might figure something out.

There's a 100mm deep space for all the wires and extension cords, but for the audience, it's a different view. We plan on incorporating a small DMX light control desk as well..

With the sudden influx of DIY threads I decided to revive this one as well. Here's the first console I designed and built..

EDIT : Here's another picture after I removed the laptop and the speaker stands.

Here's the blueprint of the first (2007) desk in case someone wants to build something similar.

Beautiful build!

I've always wondered what it's like to mix on a console like that as it looks like a bit of a reach to the turntables.

Beautiful build!

I've always wondered what it's like to mix on a console like that as it looks like a bit of a reach to the turntables.

It's actually quite ergonomic once you get used to it.. not really designed for fast transitions or scratching though. The top section houses a pair of turntables and CDJ's nicely :)

Note that the original build is missing the CDJ/laptop stand, which can (in fact, should) be built wider than 500mm (I designed it for CDJ-100s' or a laptop), which is too narrow for, say, CDJ-800's which are 300mm wide.

I also removed the speaker stands because I practice mixing mostly on headphones these days. The Formula Sound is kinda outdated and needs to be serviced, I use a Mackie D.4 with 2 CDJ's and an Akai APC40 along with a Novation Nocturn25 (I built a custom stand for it using 2 angle irons connected by a nut and a bolt and attached with a screw) hooked to a laptop.

I've also incorporated a pair of Patchblocks to my live setup too, which are extremely compact and can customized to virtually anything from an auxiliary effects processor to a synth.

EDIT : With butterfly locks, flush mounting and some Warnex/carpet covering it could be used as a mobile console as well. Heavy haul though :(

EDIT 2 : The laptop stand could be replaced with a fixed-angle top shelf 1500mm wide too.

Notice that I didn't use a table saw for the angled section... I can't remember why though.

I think that's the first time I've seen a hand plane on a DJ forum

That's a positively modern hand-plain compared to the one I've got sat on my workbench at the moment! Almost a foot and a half long, carved out of solid oak, and not a piece of metal on it apart from the blade itself! :D

^^^^Yep that's it!

Although without the top handle- there is a small stub sticking up which suggests it originally had one but it's long since snapped off. I think it's a bit longer too.

It originally belonged to my grandfather who died in 1964, so it's a few years old now!

I've decided to take some time off my projects and been making a CAD drawing of the console (although I have no access to the desk for the time being; some of the measures are estimates).. I can upload the .dxf file if anyone wants it.

EDIT : here's a Dropbox link (https://www.dropbox.com/s/1v82p2jjjsdr41e/console1.dxf?dl=0) to the .dxf file, the shelf height&depth measures are from the top of my head as is the laptop stand.. it's missing the side bracing too, if I recall correctly it was 40mmx40mm wood. I also added some stuff like the option to angle the mixer and a small space for processing/VU meters below the laptop stand.. I asked the guy who owns it whether he still has it, one of the best desks I've played on
