View Full Version : Original or edited CDs?
Does everyone buy most of their cds in the edited version or do you get one of each, with explicit lyrics and one edited for say high school dances where organizers may object to foul language?
It would be cheaper to get just one of each, but I don't know how strigent it really is out there with playing music with bad lyrics.

I don't buy a lot of cds anymore, I mostly do downloads. I'm an itunes pig. I always get edited versions and that's usually the only version I get. If someone gets pissed because Biggie isn't dropping the F-bomb enough for them....screw 'em.

Just got with edited you will rarely have to deal with a gig where people get mad because your rocking unedited and they want to hear the curses...If you subscribe to a service that provides CDs that are edited you never have to worry about something like that, for example,
www.promoonly.com
Or X-Mix, or other similar seris...

You mean I'm playing the edited versions and people will want to hear the curses?

Big seconds on the Promo Only tip. It's great because the music is edited so you can play it anywhere and it's the radio edit version that people are going to be used to. Those annoyingly long intros and things are edited out on these versions.
That's one beef I have with music services like BMG or Columbia House. It's damn near impossible to find the edited versions of albums.
I always play edited unless it's something like a wedding party that has hired me to stay after the original four hours of the contract are up. Those people are there to party and they just don't care. Otherwise I always play edited. Anybody that hears you play could be a potential client or reference. If you're playing unedited music some people might be offended and think that you don't have or don't play edited music and won't book you because of that.
If people have a problem that my music doesn't drop the F-bomb, well... f$%k 'em.

Also if the gig is language sensitive (weddings, school dances, annual dance for the local nuns etc) then you'll find a lot of songs that need 'editing' are probably unsuitable anyway! But I'm putting my hand up for the radio edits thanks, people will forgive clean versions but no ones gonna like 12yr olds listening to eminem wanting to 'cum on her lips and some on her tits'(to quote one of MANY!)

Very excellent point there, LT. There are some songs that I have edited that I just won't play at weddings, or especially at school dances. My general rule of thumb is if it's played on top 40 radio then it should be good to go, but sometimes there are some songs that are just flat out obscene, even when they're edited.

Scratching it or using a transform button would sound shitty.. and plus it's easy to miss a bad word or phrase. I think I'll just go with a record pool where they send me stuff and get certain cds in both versions for my own personal collection.
I go with several subscription services. Most of my music (about 90%) is edited. However I do college parties and they want the "original" songs. Though, even if it's edited, you can hear the crowd yell out the bad words anyway. Oh well...stick with edited and you can't do wrong.

I say keep it clean...I wont play anything that would offend my wife or my mom,its a respect thing....I wouldnt do that to my kids either...But that also goes for everyone else out there too....There is a ton of good, clean music out there for me to play and as long as your system cranks and you put on a good show you will be all set....

I've heard one school dance DJ do that and--this was before I knew anything about DJing and was like everybody else in 7th or 8th grade--thought it was awesome because he was scratching out swear words.
I heard another DJ do it and miss all the swear words and just scratch at seemingly random times.

i make my own clean versions if they are not available. sonic forge, acoustica, etc. let you capture portions of the track and reverse phrases or drop them out all together :dj:

try cool edit- i use it for songs that i cant acquire clean. I try to get all my music clean- but its kinda impossible. So, i have about 80 percent of my collection clean and the other dirty.
i mostly play clean- usually all the time- ill keep the dirty for house parties and listening with headphones by myself.
I dont play dirty just for the fact that old peeeps and alot of people dont like it at parties. So, i usually just focus on acquiring the clean versions of songs and thats it. most people are happy that the song is played period- never mind that it is clean or dirty. Some times you just get sick of the curses and you get used to the clean versions anyway.
Thats just my opinion- id rather play clean and upset some people cause i didnt play dirty than mess up my rep and upset alot of people cause i didnt play clean.
Thats my 2 cents. c ya

That's the unfortunate thing about being a mobile DJ,you just don't know who the people are at these things and whether or not they will get peeved with swearing in songs. If you're out buying tunes,go clean first and if you just happen to have some dirty mixes, you may get the opportunity to give them a go sometime. I guess that is just another talent of the mobile DJ's ,being able to judge a room full of strangers(and try not to piss them off  !)
