Ok here's the deal, I work for a company which provides child care services through many of its sites scattered around San Diego. One of them is a preschool program that serves 3-5 yr olds. Now, every year they have a graduation ceremony/presentation where the kids sing along to music, their families come and theres food etc. Last year I did it for free (well I got paid for my usual hours of working). But this year, I've established a decent equipment base and so I'm having them hire me (or else I won't do it). Anyways, I need help getting songs appropriate for children and their families.

Songs that "instruct" the audience on what to do would be great.
Also, oldies, and jazzy songs that the families may enjoy. I've been checking amazon.com for family compilations, but if you know of anything in particular, pass it on by.

Some songs that come to mind are:
Because you loved me - Celine Dion?
Vitamin C - Graduation Theme
I believe I can fly (Original...not R Kellys rendition)
The Wheels on the Bus :uhoh:

I don't expect you guys to actually know these corny songs, but even help on where to find some of this stuff will help. Thanks guys, your input will definately be put to good use! :spin:

Btw, most of these songs will be played before and after their presentations. So think like...wedding reception

Yeah i was thinkin too short and dmx....

haha thanks for the input man. I've come to realize that disney songs are probably widely known and it'll probably fill up the greater portion of the 6 hours. I'm still lookin for oldies and "chill muzak" for the waiting period. (I'll probably be listening to some 93' Till Infinity in my headphones though)

Most likely, it'll be:
Waiting period [Chill music, oldies, jazz, etc]
Presentations [Preprogrammed music selected by client]
Afterparty! w/ food [More upbeat music, pop tunes, etc]

try buying the new kidz bop line of cd's. they are mainstream songs that have been reproduced by children. Line dances are a must too- those always break the ice.

i dont think most 3-5 year olds care- but thats just my opinion. Back when i was 5 i was listening to puff and biggie smallz (clean of course) and a whole lot of pop music too. but thats just me. lol

Just try to play happy music- none of that hip hop or punk rock stuff. Also, it would help alot to go to a record store and look in the children section for songs.

there really arent many songs that i can say 5 year olds like- ive never worked with them lol. But thats why i can only recommend the kids section in the music store. I let you know if i come up with anything else. Till next time. Peace.

Haha you guys are too funny. I was listening to them too, but hey..theres a mixed crowd so bleh. I'll keep an eye out for...kidz bop. Like you said, i dont think kids would mind so much. I'm more concerned about the parents. I know a lot of them would enjoy something like marvin gaye. But then again, i'm not trying to get them in the mood to make more kids :banghead:

Thanks guys

Haha I totally know what you're talking about. But this company seriously underpays its employees. Not to mention they want everything for free. Its not like I dont want to help them out, but I paid a lot of money for my system and I'm not gonna let them just bum off of me. I'm only charging them 50 bucks to rent my PA system as opposed to 100 at other places. Its not like they don't have the money either y'know? They're just really cheap like that. Anyways, its a long story. I don't wanna unload on you guys

gotta start em young... :dj:

ahem* :uhoh:

hmm...if youre catering towards parents (and considering theyre fairly young since these are pre schoolers), then perhaps some Freestyle/High Energy. might not work on tha kids, but then again they probably wont be paying attention to tha music.

oh and since this does have to do with school...

oh and my nephew just graduated pre school too, and hes always listening to this album targeted towards kids. and damn does it annoy me. its called Backyardigans: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index%3Dblended%26field-keywords%3Dbackyardigans%26results-process%3Ddefault%26dispatch%3Dsearch/ref%3Dpd%5Fsl%5Faw%5Ftops-1%5Fblended%5F8524573%5F1/002-5770556-8260007

its affiliated with Nick Jr. so im sure tha pre schoolers will be somewhat familiar with it.

The Backyardigans is that FIRE!!!! I was watching it with my 2 and 1 year old, and when I seen one of them little characters start Bankhead Bouncing, I died from laughter. If you ever get up around 9 or 10 am put it on Nickelodeon, you won't be dissappointed when they start dancing. They be gig'in they lil ass off.

Oh god you have no idea how much I hate that crackhead sponge. Am I the only one that sees the ambiguity in that show? I mean really, its supposed to be a kids show right?? Anyways, I would hate to destroy my PA system with his annoying voice that will probably clip the amp and create a nice little fireworks show

Interactive songs are a must....I have a 5yo and an 8yo and they go nuts (In a good way) when I play something like the chicken dance....I would mix it up between the kids and the parents but they will join in as well I'm sure...Maybe some classic rock and some 80s hair....Everybody knows those songs....Just keep it clean and fun....Its not going to be fun if the kids get bored....The kids will have a blast, the parents will have fun with the kids, the kids will fall asleep in the car on the way home and sleep like logs when they get home which will make the parents happy with the quiet time at home...All of this equals GREAT word of mouth for you and your DJing..

Thats actually an awesome idea. I hadn't thought about it in that type of long term way. I'm gonna stop by office depot and grab some printable business cards too. Maybe I'll be in time for those unmarried parents' weddings. :dj:
