Are they still worth buying as a used purchase if I just wanted to play CD,s only? Are they a work horse and are the reliable? I am pretty much done with computer/controller music systems and a lot of my music was transferred to CD ages ago.

Just seen this after a quick search. If you can get a price from 200 to 300 you will be doing alright.

£650 in mint condition.

It's possibly worth your while buying them as singles as you might get a better deal.

They're as good as 2000's. Apart from some details.

Not sure where you are in England but there a group on Facebook called: buy/sell dj audio gear.
Have a look on there, there some decent stuff on there for decent prices.
You will have to look through but I've just found some 800's and 850's. That's after two minutes of looking.

I think you could get a better price but may involve a little work.

After having a much better look £650 isn't to bad a price in mint condition.

Thats for a pair ( I think thats the right price for right now), I am factoring a bit of negotiations but I think its quite doable. I am not in a rush so it's just a matter of watching and having the cash for the deal when it comes up.

If you've got time just bid on a few and you'll end up saving a bit of money in the end.

They are great units, but be careful of heavily used ones as the lasers may be about to go bad.

^^^ hard to tell without actually trying the player, hence why I never buy such stuff online.

However lasers are actually easy to replace should they go wrong. I've done that on CDJs, CD players, DVD players and every model of playstation. if you don't know what you're doing, there are tutorials and step by step guides everywhere on the net.

I have seen a few Youtube videos on the process.

Older models, think mk2 have weak lasers... Apparently badly scratched CD's or poor burnt disks turn the laser intensity up causing it to burn out quickly, i'm not 100% on that but had heard. The Mk3's are improved but by how much, who knows!!!

They also have a ribbon cable fault (every unit i've seen inside had it Have a look (https://www.facebook.com/mitchiemasha/media_set?set=a.10150188819205092.445048.501885091&type=3)). The pressure on the top chews at the internal cable and if your unlucky enough to the wires position, you will get a short. I lost a unit to it.

Expect the tact switches to be warn out or replaced, which often are replaced badly on the board if the board it self isn't replaced. There's only so many times one can resolder here before needing to make jumper cables.

The touch pressure sensor tends to be the next thing that goes, in vinyl mode the CD will just stop.

The nexus is meant to have improved switches, I'm not sure about that and they changed the way it senses the platter being touched. Plus many other major improvements.

I'd only buy a CDJ now if it was cheap and I'd expect to do some sort of servicing on it. Even a well looked after unit can't escape the floors of it simply been used.

EDIT: Not sure that link will work correctly but I have pictures of the fault in it's own album on my facebook.

Are we talking about gigging units here? surely a home used one unit can't suffer from those amount of issues you mention! they weren't exactly cheap when they came on the market.
