Hey everyone my name is Corey and i'm new to this forum. I've been a DJ for about the past 4 1/2 years and its just something i do on the side for fun. I usually DJ parties and weddings and other events that i'll get asked to do. My lil brother is in jr high and i have to DJ his dance next weekend and he's got really high expectations from me. I was hopin to get some suggestions on some songs that would blow a jr high dance away. Keep in mind they all have to be clean b/c the principle doesn't want any dirty versions played. I want to play a lot of remixes and some hott new songs. I'm gonna start off with like "lean back" and then fade it to the "lean back remix" and the same thing with "drop it likes its hott" and that remix.
Any suggestions tips and etc would be greatly appreciated.
**remixes i got so far...... lean back, yeah, drop it like its hott, put your hood up!!!

be careful with remixes unless they have been played on the radio because while we may appreciate a remix better than the original (even if we never heard it yet), they might not respond the same way.
I'm not sure if it's appropriate for a JHS dance, but reggaeton has been really hot this past year. Popular hits like Move Ya Body, Oye Mi Canto by Nina Sky, Dale Don Dale by Don Omar and Gasolina by Daddy Yankee are bound to get most kids on the dancefloor.
Probably best to stay away from like hard trance/techno. Stick w/ stuff they know. Usher, 50 cent, Ciara, Snoop, Ludacris.
Play the classic Party up by DMX (clean of course if you can).
Surprisingly, at my HS dance I remember that a few rock songs even lit up the dancefloor like crazy (Alive by POD). You might play The Reason by Hoobastank. That song is a cult classic now on the radio.
Hope that helps.

oh and of course you have to play the cha cha slide... that should be 100% in your set. make sure you know the dance and walk them thru it on the mic.

I do a fair share of JR. High dance's, Along with high school. And I find that around this area anyway. Jr. High like's rock more then rap. And alot of older rock, Such as AC/DC, Gun's And Roses etc.
As for High School, They want alot of rap, Hip hop, Anything top40. However I do get some old school rock requested. :uhoh:

play pop stuff, the mtv stuff, kids that age aren't open minded enough to start listening to other music.
yep, they like commercial tracks like RnB and pop.. the typical type of music aired on Mtv or channel V..
cant forget ..J.T..the living legend..lol

I would suggest to do some reggaeton to get it started like that daddy yankee and pitbull shit but that will only work if you have like your audience is latinos but if it is that seems to work lately

Start spinning Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim, and maybe even bring some EPMD
The kids will be looking around and then say... Yeah this music is about your age!!!
And all of a sudden 2Pac will come out when he looked like he did in the movie "juice"

play what you like, theres no point in trying to satisfy each and everyone of the clubbers demands, one could hate what you spin and one could like it. my suggestion is, play the tunes you like, but also play the tunes that you know will get everyone up on their feet tearing the dance floor apart.

Thanx everyone for your inputs and suggestions. I've been talkin to my little brother and some of his friends and they really like the idea of the remixes, so thats prolly what i'm gonna try. Any suggestions as far as tight remixes go?

Play what you like man. Play something that will open minds. People in this country will never learn to appreciate underground as much as Top 40 and TRL if you never introduce it to them. So play the good stuff. When i was back in grade school, they played a lot of house classics during our school dances and a lot of us didn't even know it was called house.

i disagree, not with baby got back cuz they love it. i disagree with playing the cha cha slide. for me, it never works unless its in highschool and all the kids are drunk. I'd do cotton eye joe (even though it makes me sick) and the electric slide. cha cha slide is too involved.
Around boston, we have this radio station called KISS 108 that plays top 40 music. if i were u, i would find ur top 40 station and listen to it for at least 2 days. thats the type of music that the kids will want to hear. i've had a few experiences where a few kids where they come up to the booth and ask for classic rock. i mean right in the middle of the dance when i've built up a dance floor and everything. I usually ignore them :spank: , but if a feel really nice, i will make a live remix if i have instrumentals on me, but most likely a re-edit and mix with hip hop.
Most j-high kids as well as high school, at least in my area, are incredibly naive and will classify any electronic music as techno. Here, i've seen djs booed off the stage for doing that. :uhoh:

I feel you man.. anything that has a beep or a synthy sound to it is immediately techno. and then they hear some vocals and are like.. "what the hell is this, its not techno cuz theres words!"
People need to understand music better. I'm sick of being put down because of what I spin, and what I listen to.

You could construct two giant middle fingers and hinge them to each speaker so they're hidden, ad tie ropes to them. Then, when the crowd boos you for playing something great, pull on that damn rope.

If you're going to play remixes, play them AFTER you play the original song. High school kids are going to expect the original when they first hear it, and they'll get all confused if it's remixed and different.
The only electronic music I'd play at a HS dance is stuff like Scooter, Darude, Alice DJ, etc. Crap that everyone knows. Yeah, you might hate it, but this isn't about you, it's about the people who are going to be there.
Oh, make sure you play Jump Around by House of Pain. That always gets everyone in a hyper mood. :)
And, most importantly, have fun!

they like lotsa hiphop, bit of hardrock, a little bit of oldies, pop, once every hour slow dance, techno and house remixes but some adrenaline on the dance floor and heats up the crowd) but not too much. some reggae songs: guys will like this cause they like to see girls dancing sexy ( who wouldnt :D )

I am in High School, and JH kids arnt as dumb as you think. One guy said theyed be confused if you played a remix, they/we are not retarded. Although at the last dance i went to they all liked "the kilers- somebody told me" and I guess you do have to be mental to like that shitte

I'm just speaking from expierience.
I played a remixed version of Baby Got Back at a school dance. You see, everyone's used to hearing the normal version, and they know where all the breakdowns are, so when it's all cut up and different, they're not expecting it and can't dance to it as good.

listen to your local radio stations and find out what songs they
play on their countdowns... you will always know which songs are
really popular in the local sceen. Also top40 works, and depending
on how risky you are play some tracks that are uptempo that you know
folks can dance to. I play unreleased stuff all the time and I get positive
feedback from the crowds on most of it... kinda makes you look like
you have new music way in advance even if its just a track on a album
that is in stores but the tracks not on the radio yet.
