For the last several years the tourney has been an annual forum tradition. All styles of trance are allowed and encouraged. From current beatport chart toppers (http://www.beatport.com/genre/trance/7/top-100), classic progressive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV0boNubTOI), tech (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQh-8cGsU8M), uplifting (https://soundcloud.com/iamnyxmusic/supersonik-way-nyx-rework), psy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ld0CzQDIhrk), euro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5st7Z4KwYqw), current progressive (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADR4bhmnIlc), trouse (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGXv2J14glY), breakbeat trance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Kz85NyXw6s), if it's got that trance feeling you can play it. We try not to let our musical taste alter the voting. Battles will be decided upon by skill and programing not specific genre taste. A wide arsenal of sounds or simply being the best in the subgenre may be keys to advancing. Typically mixes of mainstream trance do well, but if you want to play your 150 BPM Forest Psy you're more than welcome to try.

2014 Trance Tournament Rules

Entry
There will be 16 contestants. No ranking will be done on post counts or membership duration. This makes everyone equal.

Rounds
16 contestants
Round One (16), Round Two (8), Semi Finals (4), Final (2)

Deadlines
Anyone who misses a deadline this year without prior contacting me will be immediately eliminated. No excuses will be tolerated. Think if you didn't show up for your gig without calling your client. If something serious has come up let me know I will try to work with you, a few extra days can be reasonable. Try to get you're mixes done early, you should be able to find even an hour or two after work, do not wait until last minute!

Mixes
Mixes will not be restricted in track number. Instead they will be restricted by time. The final track of each mix must must have started by the end minute mark listed below. If any mixes do not conform to this the contestant will be immediately eliminated.

Last track mix in time(s):
• Round One: 30 minute mark
• Round Two: 30 minute mark
• Semi Final: 45 minute mark
• Final: 60 minute mark

If I the Tournament Director do not hear a notable new sound from a track coming into the mix right before the end minute mark but I do hear one after... you're out. Don’t press your luck with this one! Scratching, one shot samples, acapellas, or effects over the last track are okay, just no loops or new tracks.

There will be no required tracks this year. This is a no holds barred free for all, show us your style!

Mixes must be performed and recorded live, no studio or multitrack mixes. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a great free recording software. No post production of any kind is allowed, this means no compressing, fixing levels, or splicing different live sets. [EDIT: Trimming silence at start/end is okay.]

Posting Your Mix

Mixes must be 192kbps mp3 or lower in quality to allow a speedy upload/download/transfer, and so that everyone is on the same format. Delete any ID3 tag information.
Upload to any hosting site you prefer (dropbox would be preferred, but zippyshare, adrive etc are acceptable as long as you can link it)

File naming requirements:

1 vs 1:
"DJFTranceTournament2014yourusername-vs-opponent.mp3"

Then PM Rek Aviles (http://www.djforums.com/forums/member.php?12-Rek_Aviles) with the file link to download. Post in this thread as soon as you have uploaded and PM'd Rek so I know you got your mix in on time. Including a link to this thread so Rek can see matchups would be appreciated.


Battles
Battles will be posted in batches after the deadline for submissions has been met in order to ease work off the DJForums moderators and to not overwhelm voters with massive amounts of playtime. Matchups will be random by use of a random number generator or writing names and putting them in a hat. If you request that I videotape this I can.

Below is a breakdown of the length of the mixes.

16 contestants
Round One (30 min)
Round Two (30 min)
Semi Finals (45 min)
Final (60 min)

Voting
The battles will be posted as Username versus Username. Files are anonymous. Anyone still active in the championships will be REQUIRED to vote in ALL battles. Don’t expect any sympathy on this one, failing to do so will result in automatic disqualification. Eliminated contestants should show good sportsmanship and continue to listen to battles and vote. If there is a tiebreaker, DJF mod Rek Aviles will then vote.

Note:Ghost votes do not count in the final score. In order for a vote to count, there must be a comment made by the voter. Please put in effort into your comment, describing what you enjoyed or disliked. Try to vote based on skill rather than tune preference. New members with low post counts may vote but suspicious voting will be investigated by IP lookups and such.

Any questions please raise your hand and I'll help you out, err post them here. Please enjoy this competitive experience I hope you all grow as DJs with positive and constructive feedback! A big hand to previous tournament director JackStalk, thanks for the OP template!

The first 16 confirmed contestants to enter will be allowed entry into the tournament. I will be a backup entry in case a contestant falls through. Vernski is automatically in since he won last year (CONGRATS!). Good luck to everyone!

Quick question about post production, is normalisation okay? Just to bring the overall gain up to a nice level.

Welcome! I'm going to say no on the normalization, pretend your mix is being broadcast live on BBC1*. Part of the technical skill you will be judged on is keeping by your levels constant or under control. Normalization can really smooth those over. We can always turn our stereos up, so if in doubt give yourself plenty of headroom.

*I guess by this logic if you have a hardware compressor or use it as a live effect in software it's legal in this.

Alternative Edit: If it's a really serious issue, pm me the download link, I'll normalize and then send over to a Battle Mod. If I get dragged into competing Ill have the battle mod do this. I think that's a decent compromise?

Hey lads one thing I want to say about the tourney that needs to happen from everyone starting asap, is we all need to promo within the forum as much as possible, keep any Tourney related threads bumped to the top of the que so that everyone knows it on, spam the shit out of it.

You need to promo your own battles when we get to those stages, and atm we should be trying to recruit anyone that you know within the forum that has even a slight interest in Trance, we still have 6 spots to fill (looks like 7 on the list but Sedna needs to be added to it) so get spamming

^^ Speaking of that, I've recently contemplated starting a Breaks tournament, and donating a $50.00 ___________<-----something or other. Beatport doesn't have a gift card option, so I was thinking of an Amazon giftcard, or something along the lines.

I would be promoting this on my Facebook wall, which caters to a lot of the current Breakbeat peeps in the US / EU, and honestly $50.00 to anything would surely entice some people over. Also, will promote in quite a few other places.

I've been seriously thinking about this for the last week or so.

This is also for Dice's benefit.....

You get so much more out of this kind of battle format. Aside from having your own mixes critiqued, you also get an insight into what the more experienced guys pick up on when they critique a mix throughout the tourney. There's a total of 15 battles or 30 mixes, so you get exposed to a heap of different styles with varied levels of skill and execution. You can also discover other areas of trance music you've not experienced before, stuff that really hits home and makes you want to explore different sub genres.

The above paragraph pretty much summarises my experience last year and I'm sure it will be the same for anyone else. :tup:

Given that battles are anonymous during the voting stage, In the event of a sync vs non sync battle I think that Rek & Delta should reserve their votes until the conclusion of the voting. Since Rek & Delta would have knowledge of who's mix is who's, they can lodge their votes. This may not alter the overall result of some battles, but it will provide at least 2 votes that is in line with what Chris mentioned.

For the sake of transparency, once someone has uploaded their battle mix, they should state in their post if sync was used or not.

I was just wondering what your take on it is, its up to you how you vote, I was just interested on your opinion. Personally I dont think it matters much anymore, I used to be against it but like Sedna said already it really doesnt take much to beat match Trance and there is a lot more to mixing than Beatmatching.

If you use it as a crutch and your phrasing or EQing is totally off, the mix is still going to sound terrible. Anybody can sync two 16 beat loops together and gradually baby them into one flawless mix over two minutes, so it depends on how it's used.

Some of us don't have the ability to sync, it can really cause an unfair advantage. I'm using CDJ-2000 MK1s without software, everything I do is manual including no waveforms on screen.

Contestants are not required to state whether they used sync or not this year, this is something we will hash out in the off season next year. I figure if you have the technology and want to use it go ahead. If you have the capability to use live synthesizers, drum machines, vocals, effects, or whatever that should work in your favor, even sync. The days of the great DJ equalizer 'the 1200s' are over, the CDJ stabbed it, the .02% pitch resolution w/ math shot it, and sync just lowered the casket.

Hey guys, I've got a message I want to put to you guys. It is fantastic that we have a full complement of contestants .

What will make this competition even better is that we all stay for the long haul. Aside from the obvious courtesies and obligations that require us to vote after elimination.

By staying on we all help ourselves by learning from other battles. This in turn helps others as they progress through the tourney. The more critique and input we generate here will only better us all as dj's and create a culture of camaraderie.

The battles will be posted as Username versus Username. Files are anonymous. Anyone still active in the championships will be REQUIRED to vote in ALL battles. Don’t expect any sympathy on this one, failing to do so will result in automatic disqualification. Eliminated contestants should show good sportsmanship and continue to listen to battles and vote. If there is a tiebreaker, DJF mod Rek Aviles will then vote.

Note:Ghost votes do not count in the final score. In order for a vote to count, there must be a comment made by the voter. Please put in effort into your comment, describing what you enjoyed or disliked. Try to vote based on skill rather than tune preference. New members with low post counts may vote but suspicious voting will be investigated by IP lookups and such.

As stated in the enlarged, bold and coloured text, voting requires a certain and real amount of effort. This should be reflective of the level feedback provided by contestants such as Delta V, Chris Hynds, Bnr, JackStalk and Vernski thus far. Quite frankly 2 sentence descriptions don't cut it here, I'm certain that all devoted contestants are more than happy to invest their time, that being 7 hours of listening time, plus additional time to construct responses for this first round of voting. It is only fair that the favour is returned, call it karma or just good manners.

If anyone is uncertain on how to post adequate feedback, just refer to this as a reference....


Mix 1: Interesting intro that goes into a big room sound. Really bad mix at 3:00 in, way off beat and a clash of melodies. Second tune felt trancey and nice, I would have opened with this. Another noticeably off transition at around 6:00, the melodies were again clashing. Sweet breakdown in this tune at 9:00. Mix out felt sudden. Mix at 13:00 was probably the best so far, feels a lot faster now. Yeah I can hear the pitch bend at 15:00 were you gain a lot of speed. Very trancey tune here it sounds nice. Decent mix at 18:30 into another uplifting tune. I think you seem more comfortable with the faster 138 trance I would make your entire mix in that style. Mix was a little bit off at 24 min mark. Nice moving mid range sound on this tune, really driving. Ahh but then some weird ass melody, I'm not sure if I hate it or it's brilliant.

Mix 2: Great intro, sweet break. Really lovin this tune that guitar is nice. Slow mix out at 8:00, very clean, good EQing or filtering. Another break good stuff very airey. At then end of the 12 min mark another tune coming in, those snares got pretty loud over one another. Here comes the four to the floor. A lot darker feeling now. Wooooo dat techno percussion. New track around 18:00 mins, again nice EQ or filtering work on layering these. 22:00 mins has a new track a lot more minimal I think I know this one.Techno and Trance can really work together but what I like is opening with techno and then getting into the deeper trance like stuff on Saturate Audio label. Another tune at 26:00, nice feeling to this one.

Mix 2 was far better on it's technical aspects and flow seemed to work well, it did veer pretty close to techno though, while mix 1 had a lot of mistakes and not quite clear direction, I would have sticked with the faster style of trance you had in the second half. voting for mix 2!

Today I will be starting to vote. For the record, I wont be entering this competition next year. I have been reading through the feedback that everyone is getting and I get vibes coming from all this information:

1- If you show your a human behind the decks as slip up just once, you will not make it to the next round.

2- If people have heard the song you play before, they will skip ahead.

3- If the voter prefers the one DJ's style from a previous listening experience, they will be biased toward the DJ they favor

4- If you make too many small mistakes being human, someone will read the reviews of your mix before and write off your mix without even giving a detailed listen

5- The listeners opinion of enjoying one mix over the other but the one mix made too many mistakes so the listener can not vote for the mix they enjoyed more


For the record, I will be voting on which mix I enjoy more. Not which mix lives up to some kind of perfect checklist that I must mark off and if every check mark is filled out at the end of the mix then you get the win.

I agree with a few points that you have brought up but also disagree with a few.

The comp is harsh on technical ability for a reason, you need to be good in all aspects to win otherwise it wouldn't be much of a competition, it's always been like this, you need to break down the mix and point out the faults so that you can learn from it, I entered my first comp here about 3 years ago maybe more and got torn to shreds, I was all butt hurt at first but I learnt so much from it.

I agree with you that it's not fair that people skip through the sets if they have already heard a track..

And the point you said about making 1 mistake and you're out of the round isn't really true, it depends on how big the mistake is really.

Favouritism is also down to the person that's voting there's nothing you can do about that really, I agree it's not fair but it happens, I don't agree with doing it, I actually voted against one of my fav dj's today because even tho I preferred his track selection he made what I thought was a bad error and the other dj mixed flawlessly, I think it should be based on technical ability first and track selection 2nd but that just my opinion.
