Whats up everybody, got an upcoming gig next Saturday possibly every Saturday at a local mini bar and I gotta play rock music and top 40s, the problem is im a hip hop/ reggae/ house dj and I dont own any rock music or most top 40 music...
whats a good place to get that type of music?

Honestly, you probably shouldn't be taking gigs to play music that you don't own or have any experience mixing... If you're set on doing it, I'd probably just go on iTunes, all the music is pretty cheap on there and you can usually find some big compilations of like "100 best rock tracks EVER" etc for super cheap. Easy way to build up a big catalogue of music if you should so wish.

JuxtaPoser has it right for your circumstance IMO. For Top 40 over the last several months, one good source is the Now That's What I Call Music (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music&field-keywords=now+that%27s+what+i+call+music) series assuming you want radio edits for the most part. Then take a look at Billboard and fill in the gaps including what's been released since the latest NTWICM. I buy most of my digital downloads from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/MP3-Music-Download/b/ref=sa_menu_mp3_str1?ie=UTF8&node=163856011). I like that they have the cloud where you can store what you buy as a last resort backup. You can upload to it too.

Also, when you say they want top 40 and rock, I'm thinking the rock they're looking for is in the nu rock cagtegoy... stuff like Linkin Park. I could be wrong. I bought a bunch of back catalog rock from ERG Music (http://www.ergmusic.com/usa/) and I find just putting that series on random is pretty good listening even without culling for garbage. It doesn't take much to get an ERG account and they might have a pretty good deal on some back catalog stuff.

If you're going to play there regularly going forward, I'd pick up a music pool account or add to the one you already subscribe to. I'm going with Prime Cuts (http://www.primecutsmusic.com/) when I subscribe which shouldn't be very long from now. When I do, I'm going to take them up on an offer to buy past CD's. I'm a little behind on the current top 40 stuff right now.

For rock, all you need is those compiltions juxta mentioned, and then fill in some gaps if you see something missing. Top 40 is trickier if you want remixes/dj intros/dj outros. The compilatuons have radio edits, which are a bit harder to mix, especially if you havent mixed top 40 before. But you should manage pretty well since youre hiphop/house dj.

You will find that you will be playing more Classic rock then new rock in a bar . http://www.q107.com/Music/Countdown/Top500Songs.aspx

Consider joining a music pool (like zipdj.com or promoonly.com)...

Wow. There is a lot of "Rock" out there. Are they going to be dancing to the Rock?

Here's a scan of my "Dance" rock playlist.

Nice list Sween. I'm just curious how they're encoded that 75 songs only take up 265 MB. A random sample of 75 songs about 3 min. long on my system take up almost twice that much space. I only noticed because I was thinking typically I can fit about 80 songs on a standard Cd in mp3 44.1/320 format.

That was off my iPhone plugged into my work computer's itunes...

I use the "drop to 128mbps" option for syncing my iPhone... so I can fit more on it. I use all 320 vbr encoding for my main laptop... so yeah it takes up much more space normally.

Nice catch.

I agree with juxtaposer. I've taken gigs where I had to play music I don't really like and it sucks. You spend your profits buying music you don't want to hear just to spend a few hours having to listen to it. When I get offered a gig to play music I'm not into I refer the customer to a DJ that's good with that genre.

Have you tried turning on the radio?

Seriously. I don't think it will ever be hard to find top40 and rock. Lol
