Sween, sweet job of the truss. Can't see any wires. Mine still looks like a rats next from behind, lol. All cool pics and nice setups.

No I can't... because I don't use an Obey 10 and have no idea how to use it. I had an Obey 40 but I snapped it in half (not really). Seriously though, I hated trying to program shows with an Obey. That photo where you see the Obey was the only time I ever used it...

Got ShowXpress and never went back. Sooooooooo much easier. I have my cheap laptop dedicated to lighting now.

Other option is Freestyler or Light Jockey (if you got mad cash).

Ah. Ok saw the obey in your pic. I actually downloaded showxpress a few weeks ago but am having a difficult time adjusting to it. Didn't get the dongle yet. I will when I learn the program. Really want to use it for spotlight dances and creating scenes for the uplights.

Nah, I just depends on the venue. And yeah I'm usually on a stage or something so that usually isn't a problem.

Small friends wedding i did a few weekends ago. The dancefloor was off to the left of the picture, hence the wierd angle of the lights.

Speakers are Wharfedale Titan 12s
Lighting consists of a light emotion hexaled, 2 par64leds, 2 cheap ebay led moving heads and a light emotion LED mirrorball style light (forget the exact name), as well as 2 Light Emotion Colour Bank LEDs behind the table up to the roof

^huh?

Francisco, it looks like you've got some good stuff but forgive me as I get a little critical here...

The truss on the speakers? How is that safe?
The truss is bending in the middle and it doesn't even have any weight on it! What cheap truss is that? Or are you not fastening the sections properly?
Why do you even need the truss anyway? You have barely anything on it.
Why not couple all your subs in fron of the stage? Why do you have some up on the stage? I'm assuming the answer to this is because you needed the extra height for the truss?
What is the contraption behind you? I'm assuming it looks better in the dark that in the daylight.
It also seems like a lot of speakers for that job... But hey that's the least of my comments.

Just left me wondering....

FranciscoVelasquez
02-07-2012, 08:46 PM
I don't bolt them together because I didn't hang anything heavy on them... i recieved the truss as a gift from an uncle from an old antenna lol The "contraption" behind me are the chauvet eq tubes... its like an LED equalizer looks pretty cool, and yes way better in the dark. I used all these speakers because those events were for 500+ People... i'll post some later of smaller events.

Sween has it. I mean if you are doing someones wedding spend the extra couple minutes and get those wires tucked. Buy some X foot extrensions and some velcro wire ties. Show the couple you have some pride in your set up. Plus do you really want people seeing that when they walk into the reception hall. Im not trying to be a dick just trying to show what i think looks bad.

I don't know what makes me laugh more, the bird's nest on the truss or the blue and red police siren lights.

Seriously MrDJ, clean up your act!

What confuses me with MrDJ is that you took the time to zip tie the wires to the tree with the par lights, but then didn't do it down the stand? If you would of used black zip ties, then done it down the stand it would of helped a lot. Black velcro is what I'd probably recommend though, or gaffers tape.

Not to hound MrDJ more but CLEAN IT UP.
1. Black X Cords
2. Black Zip ties or velcro straps
3. Black Spray paint goes a long way
4. Really Blue and red police light....80's called..
5. Table skirt or facade spend 80-100 bucks. It will go a long way

Not to me mean. BUT this is why people have a mind set that DJ's should be charging 100 bucks a night.

They are decent speakers. i picked them up when they were fairly new for about $1400. my only gripe about them is that the tweeter horn doesn't have a very far throw, compared to my pr612s. other than that its a very solid speaker.

A surprise Sweet Sixteen performed at the Riverwalck Restaurant in Perryville, PA. It was a fun group, who danced non-stop. Custom Lightscaping package included 12 Color changing uplights, and 4 computer controlled Moving Heads.

The ceiling was covered with tarps that hung down, with some areas drooping as low as 6 ft, making it tough to get my Moving Heads where I wanted them.

70 person baby shower. SUCKED for about an hour. It was a 5 hour party and the dinner took 2 hours. I couldnt believe how long it took. Open dancing started at 8 and was nice until just after 9 when the drunk host of the party came over to me for the 3rd time to request Rick Ross and Jay Z. The crowd was responding to newer dance some disco and soul so I sucked it up and played his requests. EVERYONE hated it except him and his 4 friends that decided to sit at their table, hed bob and sing the songs. Awesome, thanks... I was just about to switch it back when he came up and said his mother wanted to hear Donna Summer. I laughed told him I was about to then the party started again. I do have to say that Im terrible with handleing requests from hosts or anyone important. For a wedding during the planning meeting all this is covered but a small private party doesnt usually need a planning meeting. Live and learn thou. Was a great party regardless

This was a fun Sweet Sixteen, performed for a great Birthday Girl (Alexa) by Stevie Ray Entertainment. The room was the beautiful Terrace Ballroom at the Inn at Pocono Manor. The family and friends in attendance were a high spirited group who danced throughout the evening.

To help her achieve her dream party she chose our custom "Lightscaping Package" including.
Color Changing Uplighting, to match her decor, and floral arrangements (Provided by 15 Blizzard Puck Uplugged RGBA's)
Concert Style Intelligent Light Show Including 4 Moving Heads (2 Blizzard Torrent 90's & 2 Torrent 90 Beams, mounted on top of Global Truss)

Are the inside movers on a speaker stand? What is the conversion for that? Good work!! how did you do the uplights, with the wireless from blizzard the wicicle?

DJStevieRay
03-02-2012, 11:45 PM
Each puck had it's own Wicicle. Yes the Torrent Beams, are on top of speakers stands. I made custom bases that they sit on. I'll try to find the pics of them.

They are on top of Ultimate Teleloc TS-90 stands, so I started with this bracket
http://stevierayentertainment.com/pics/Mounts-1.jpg

Then I cut 3/4" Plywood to the size of the heads, drilled 1" holes for the feat and a slot for the piece of metal the safety cable runs through.
http://stevierayentertainment.com/pics/Mounts-2.jpg

I then carpeted the plywood, and put velcro (the harder fingers) on the bottom of the heads to help them stick in place (not neccessary, but being cautions)
http://stevierayentertainment.com/pics/Mounts-3.jpg

And this is the end result. These were for my old Vizi-Spot's, I had to make bigger platforms for the Torrents, as the bases are about an inch larger.

I was reading a photography forum the other day and a pro photographer says the number one question people ask when they see his pictures is "what kind of camera do you have". To which he replies, "it doesn't matter".

I think if the equipment is proven reliable and allows you to do a good job, the name brand doesn't matter. I still use my Mackie TH-15a Thump tops and they work great (for my needs). I have seen plenty of people swear by the Behringers... glad you like yours.

Love the post. Agree completely. I just hate hearing from the people that have no experience with any of the equipment and make no attempt reading appropriate reviews

Donnie, It was just a joke, for a long time Behringer was a joke. This is why I added the f'n "JUST KIDDING" to the end of the line, I then followed it up with a compliment to your use of StyleFlip on it. I hope you

BTW, I purchased a DJX-700 and 3 days later returned it. When I needed studio monitors I really thought about Truth's, but I was scared after my previous experience with Behringer. I got Yamaha's instead.

I am glad your gear has been good to you. I will say though when I purchased my last set of powered speakers, I did do side by side's with different Powered Behringer tops, and (this is just my humble opinion), I felt the horns had a harshness to them in the midrange, they kind of reminded me of the Mackie's which I also feel are a little raspy. Again it is just my opinion, and not an expert opinion.

You are welcome to look at the video's I posted on this thread and feel free to trash anything I own in them. From the $2000 Moving Heads, Battery Powered Wireless DMX UpLights to the Pioneer DJM-800, EV Wireless Mics, QSC Powered speakers, Mac Book Pro's. I don't pretend to know quality when it comes to gear. I invest in quality. Hell even my 1200's at home are M5G's. I have also been around for 20 years, so I have used everything from American Audio to Gemini to Numark to Pioneer to UREI to CROWN to Shure to EV to EAW to Rane to Yamaha to Behringer.

I understand its a joke but it gets pretty played out and annoying. If you actually tried and heard my tops or used my mixer I would fully appreciate your comment but the sacrasm gets pretty annoying.

Btw no need to try to impress me. Your $2000 Moving Heads, Battery Powered Wireless DMX UpLights to the Pioneer DJM-800, EV Wireless Mics, QSC Powered speakers, Mac Book Pro's dont impress me. Maybe when I was in high school I would have been impressed but all that tells me is that you overspend and like to name/brand drop. Out of that list of shit the only thing I would actually invest my money in is the 800. Thats all.

"I will say though when I purchased my last set of powered speakers, I did do side by side's with different Powered Behringer tops"... Which tops? the 150$ 212s or the 900$ 415s? Big difference in quality.

"You are welcome to look at the video's I posted on this thread and feel free to trash anything I own in them.".... I wouldnt bash anything. If you put the time and effort into a review, video or comment I would appreciate it but maybe offer some constructive comments instead of sarcasm and brand dropping.

Unfortunially I am not as cool as you and havent paid 2000$ for my movers and I pay an assistant 150$ to dmx and plug in my 42 slim pars rather then pay double for batterys and a wireless dmx pack. I hope to one day be catagorized in the same group as you. Remember, This is my 1st year starting my own mobile business and Im pretty proud of what Ive built for my 1st year.

BTW, maybe instead of overspending your $$ you should think about fixing your website. Looks cool but freezes both of my work pcs which Ive never had an issue with.

Donnie,
Thank you for the information on my web site, may I ask which page(s) caused your machine to freeze so I may fix it? Also what browser you were using.

I don't feel I overspend, as I said I have been around for a long time, and built it up over 20 years. If you would have seen my setups on the old forums, you would have seen the many itinerations my setups have gone through. Again, I thought I did pass on a compliment on your use of Skinz, I think it was very creative marketing.

BTW. I did check out your site, and it is very good. The only thing I would add, is maybe use a different picture on the left side, rather than the same one on all pages. That is not a nock, just some constructive criticism. Overall it is great.

PS, Seeing your gallery you have really accomplished a lot in one year, keep up the great work.

It actually may be my pc. It just froze on yahoo too but with yours it was as every page loaded. Maybe someone can try it out and see if it's my work computer

Thank you for the compliment and I'm sure you understand where I'm coming from.

Sorry, I brought the thread down for a bit. I'll try out my site from a couple different machines. The only page I ever had problems with is my home page load time, which is because of the heavy graphics use. I also want to re-do my portfolio page with less video's posted, probably more of a blog format. I use an assistant too, but having the battery operated wDMX pucks, cut our uplight setup time from around 45 minutes a room to under 10, they are great if/when you can swing them. It gives alot more time for programming.

OK then boys and girls, let's see some more setups, and I will refrain from the jokes, as it can get ugly :P

I don't want to continue the derail of the thread, but wanted to quickly weigh in on the "gear wars" that see going on here. I think everyone is entitled to use whatever equipment no matter what the cost as long as it is working for you (and your clients are happy). Personally I do not have experience with every Behringer product (or any other manufacturer for that matter), so it is useless to bash on it unless you've tried them side by side... BUT I will say that when it comes to buying my OWN gear I fall into the same category as StevieRay. I do not want to take the risk of buying inferior equipment. I have been burned by buying something too cheap only to have to buy it again. There is nothing wrong with spending the extra money to buy gear with a better reputation. It's not a luxury everyone can afford, but the peace of mind of owning top of the line gear is a good feeling. I don't think anyone is "showing off" here.

RodneyL

StevieRay, your website works fine for me. No freezes.

There was definitely a communication break down on the last page. Sorry if I stirred the pot, but like Sween said, different equipment for different folks. I'm sure we all know and appreciate the quality and reliability of high end gear. But we all also know sometimes the bargains are great buys too.

I have a gig tomorrow night for a Teen Dance. I only have 1 hour to setup, so I might not take pics, lol. They are rushing me and I might have to skip a few wire ties here and there to be ready in time.

My wife was there with me and she helped me get everything tied up in time. They already had the lights off before I could take pics though, so the pics only came out so so with my camera phone in the dark. It was a long conference room at the Holiday Inn, so I put 2 TH-15a tops at my booth and used the other two about 20 feet apart down the wall, sub was in the corner. I also used 4 up lights down that wall in green, since it was St pattys day. Yes, I realize it is a lot of effect lights, went for a dance club atmosphere. I have the 4bar and 4play at my table, also ran the micro galaxian at different times during the night.

Overall it was a fun event. Had about 150 kids doing the cupid shuffle... which was cool. Only had to mix out of one song due to gratuitous teenage grinding that occurred. They mostly behaved themselved except for screaming the cuss words that were edited out of my tracks... lol What's the point of radio edits when they do that? lol.

Heres a quick and dirty video from my phone.

I have yet to have a gig request or pay for a full light truss setup. I used to have one and no one ever wanted it, but i set it up a few times at no charge for practice, and it was such a time waster. I eventually sold it and bought the 4bar/4play, which takes about 5 minutes to setup and get going. I want to buy another 4bar with the 6spot next year.

@rodneyL

You said your sub was in the corner? Was it behind you? Or in a corner out of the way?

You can see it slightly under my table to the left. I tried it facing out and in, sounded better in (even though that put me between the sound and the kids). I would have preferred to have been flat against the wall with my table and leave the sub alone in the corner, but they setup a snack table opposite me and asked me to use that corner. I could have done the gig without the sub in my opinion. We were in a hotel and they gave us a polite request to not blast the people upstairs too much.

Could you explain what gear your using in your second photo?
The top speakers are Bose 901 mods (11 bose drivers + Celestion horn.... horn removed since photo and replaced with 2 celestion HF-50 bullets crossing over @ 9khz :D) powered by a QSC GX5
The lower subs are EV 18 eliminators reloaded with Peavey low rider 800 watt drivers.
The mid subs are no-name plywood cabs loaded with 15 800w low rider subs...
powered by a Tapco J-2500 or if a larger venue or say a prom I use 2 Mackie 1400i amps in bridge mode (one for each L+R set of subs)

was weary about mixing subs but the 15s take over or fill the hole where the 18s leave off and the Bose start.
I use an Alesis comp/limiter for the bose and a DBX project1 comp/limiter for the subs.
crossover and EQ are Rane.

For playout I use a Denon DN X100 and 2 Denon DNS 100 players in an odyssey case. I built in a Maya 44 soundcard into the case as well as a psu for my Acer laptop so all is quick connect including power in, mic in and the audio out to the FX rack.

there are add-ons for Karaoke that rarely get used as there is not much call for it where I am, I often just throw it in for free to get repeat business and haven't updated the the songs for a couple of years now.

Lights are 24 old school pinspots on 2 tripods run from a Zero88 FX4 and a dual pinspoted mirrorball between the stands if needed.
I have a modified double Derby (1, 4inch 300w halogen tube instead of 2 300w bulbs)
1 Chauvet vue 3 and 2 Chauvet vue 4.1 moonflowers.
2 small R30 flood boxes (3 bulbs in each) for lighting the floor... running on a Dimmed 30 year old Pulsar Zero 3000 (from the UK)
and other small ad-ons if needed.

DJ Scotch and Donnie: I'm LOVIN those facades! Very practical and classy looking!

Are the panels themselves made out of plexiglass? I saw some that said they had the option to be made out of spandex?? Sounds strange.
How have they worked out for you guys? I assume there are some little legs or kickstands that come out so they are sturdy? Have they ever fallen over? Had problems with people leaning on them or kicking them when coming up to request? Anything like that?
What type of lights do you shine through them? I assume you can use something pretty cheap?

Any details would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks rocket's ass

One I have is made out of spandex, no issues so far, I added small hooks and tie them with DJ table so it doesn't fall down! Luckily every request I get comes from MC coz I make him dance with people on floor with mic so no distraction to me with request. people just ask him to play certain songs and after 3-5 song request he comes and tells me that they want this.

I use LED lights Chauvet COLORpalette 4 of them. Works like charm with my Chauvet slimpar 56 and DMX controller. :-)

Hope this helps. BTW the effect you get on spandex is much better and elegant than plexiglass.

Mine is also lycra or spandex. Mine is from dragonfrontboards.com and the panels link together sanding themselves. They are very sturdy but the lycra does need repaceing every so often or just a wash.

FYI- the Scrim King guy posted here last year when the old forum was online... He had a DJ buddy who posted also that always kinda bashed DJ's when they made their own scrims and posted DIY instructions, I think he felt we were taking money from his friends wallet by not ordering from him.

The jellydomes are still effects lights, right? I was referring to something more like some PUCKS up there. I count like 8 effects likes pointed at the floor and no wash (except for the stuff on your skirts). Don't get me wrong, looks like they are having a great time. I just personally like to see a better mixture of wash and effects, especially at a reception.

Nothing too fancy. This was my first wedding and by myself. Went off with out a hitch!!!

I tried to keep it as clean looking as I could. Need some gaffer tape but could not find any. I also had a 500w powered speaker outside for the ceremony. It is a Beringer 12".

I think I am going to build a facade for the next time I do a wedding. I played Pennywise- Bro Hymn and the whole wedding party went ape shit, beers flying, a smal mosh pit, singing along, it was epic....but a facade would provide much better protection from the beer spray.

People really like the line dance songs, I had to play the Wop twice, did the Cha Cha shuffle, and the electric slide. It was really a lot of fun!!!

Thing is the corner was not mine but for the country club.

Good job! Small tip. Instead of wrapping the cables around the tripod, buy some velcro strips and run the cable down the back of the tripod and strap them down. Will look much neater. Keep up the good wedding work!

I'm called out by other DJ's everytime I post pics of mine. It might have actually been you once or twice in the past.

My response is always that I "like to use them in certain situations". I, personally, do not like the industrial look of a speaker tripod. So I prefer a single pole into a sub or the tripod scrims.

And, yes, I have had compliments from guests and brides on the scrims almost every time I use them.

I'm not knocking anyone for using them. Yes a tripod is "industrial" looking, I guess.

...But a tripod is also small and thin. My personal opinion is that the big scrims start to make things look "flashy". Sometimes less is more I think.

And just like you don't always use the scrims, I don't always use a truss.

They are a cool venue for shining lights on, I'll give you that... and they don't look sloppy. They're kinda neat. But I can't see myself using them because they seem to draw the eye towards something that I'd rather try to hide.

Personal preference.

I'd agree with both of you. I'd almost always use my sub n pole but if I HAD to use a tripod, which I'd MUCH rather not I'd def use my scrims.

I've had my tripod scrims for a year and have yet to take them out of the bag since I don't really use my tripods and the few times I have I've placed the tripod behind my facade.

I actually like the facades... for some reason lighting up the table doesn't bother me as much. (I think the reason is because the table/facade is always there no matter what, you are not making it look "bigger"... while scrims make your speaker stands look huge)

Sween,

To answer your questions about facades...

Most are 46" tall standing on the ground.

In terms of panel width- it varies.
For standard (basic) facades, 5 panels, at a 3ft. panel width is pretty common for an 8ft. table.

Some 4 panel facades that cover an 8ft. table will have two 4ft. wide panels and two 3 ft panels.

Other 5 panel combinations that cover an 8ft. table will have three 3ft. panels, and two, 2 ft. panels.

As you can see, it totally varies by design.

In terms of thickness, some people use 2in, others use 1in. And, as I'm sure you know they tend to either have plexi or lyrca fills.

Canvass bags work for carrying and protecting, but it can be difficult to manage a canvass bag filled with panels that size- if you have the room (and budget) a hard-case makes life alot easier- though you're talking $50 DIY soft case out of moving blankets vs. 500+ hardcase on wheels. Often times, the case costs more than the facade itself.

Whatever route you go, make sure that you can easily wash/replace the lycra or plexi as it will certainly wear, get kicked around, have stuff spilled on it etc.

Sween

Thanks Nick. I was thinking specifically about the Dragonboard ones.

I usually don't have much space left in the truck so hard cases are probably a little too big... I just want to make sure the Dragonboard takes up equal or less space than what I currently use (DJskirt Mobile pro Booth).

WingMan

I ordered the softcase with mine. The panels fold together decently flat (~6 inches) and can be detached easily from one other as the hinges do not lock in. They are simple slide on and off.

Yes, they use lift off hinges so you can have all the panels separate. In terms of dimensions on the dragonboards, 46" tall by the panel configurations I gave are accurate (depending on the model you choose.) They also list the panel dimensions of each model on their website.

They don't mention the thickness of the panel though.

I think I decided I'm buying one. 3 large panels and two small ones. Unless there's another manufacturer who makes an equal quality product. Yes I could make my own, but I don't have the time and probably won't do as good a job.

I like how the speakers match! What you should do is get some speaker stands, and get your subs out from underneath, because that is the worst place for them. You want them coupled in front of you, or facing a foot away from a corner or a wall. Having the subs separated creates comb filtering, making alot of areas more quiet than others. When you couple cabs, you get 3 free dbs. When you couple into a wall, 6 dbs. When you couple in a corner, 9 dbs! When I see subs under tops I facepalm. There's a thread in amps and speakers that explains this more in depth.

And that the rules you mentioned don't always play out perfectly the same way in every acoustic environment? When doing so it can help smooth out room nodes and also, 3 db is doubling of power. Provided properly coupled in a perfect situation, you would cut down half amp output thus your amp is running less hot and giving you more circuit headroom.

Yes actually it does. It doesn't matter what type of cab. Even so, separating them creates separate distances from the listening area and each sub, causing phasing. The only appropriate time to separate them is to eliminate room nodes.

You're right.

You've convinced me to ditch my pristine wedding rig, and trade all of it in for a pair of Kustom mains on cheesy looking scrims, build some homemade bass reflex subs and senselessly "couple" them in a corner somewhere, and finally drill a bunch of holes in my wobbly truss and hang at least 10 mismatched fixtures from it.

Seriously... We're all here to help each other. But when I see all your other threads where you ignore good advice, and then offer other members advice that doesn't even make sense, I'm going to say something about it.

No. You are just flat out wrong. "Coupling" and "placing next to each other" are NOT the same thing. Building a Tuba 39 and surfing the forums does not qualify you to give advice quite yet.

And I'm sorry, but especially in a wedding setting, looking good is JUST as important as sounding good (unless your client tells you otherwise). Your setup needs to look PERFECT at a wedding. Trading some bass output for a professional looking setup is well worth it.

Triple S, Actually I do have to side with Higgumz here. He is correct, coupling subs does give you a 3db increase, and it does work with horn loaded, Bass Reflex, Front loaded, Band Pass, Isobaric. About the only type you cannot couple for the extra dbs is infinite baffle. Hell you don't even need 2 subs to get the benefit from coupling. Take a front loaded QSC KLA181 sub and take measurements with it on the floor (ie. boundry coupled), then fly it 10 ft. in the air, and take another reading. With the same source, and volume settings, you will more or less see a 3db decline.

But even though he is correct, and you can get the db increase from virtually any sub, you are also correct about Weddings and visually appealing setups, can be more of a benefit rather than breaking crystal chandeliers by maxing out your db levels. 90% of my events, I do not need the extra 3db, and I go for the more asthetically pleasing tops over sub setup.

Perhaps you are all misunderstanding the term. "Coupling" and "placing next to each other" are different. If you are using the term in the latter meaning, that's fine, but realize there is a big difference.

Taking a sub and putting it in the corner is not "coupling." This is running the sub in half-space or quarter-space, which does typically increase output regardless of design - but for a different reason. Doubling cone area + half-space loading would theoretically yield +6db, yes. However, you are implying that doubling cone area alone does not net a 3 db gain, but a 6 db gain, simply because they are right next to each other, regardless of wall or corner loading. It does not work this way. With your logic, a dual version of a sub is automatically 6db more efficient than the single version.

It is true that you can LOSE output by separating subs. But this is not the same as "coupling" horn loaded enclosures - in other words, positioning them together with a plate so that the horn throats are lengthened. This actually modifies the box's parameters, resulting in increased efficiency. So you not only get the benefit of doubling cone area (a 3 db gain) but you also gain the benefit of a longer horn path (another 3 db gain). If you simply place two horn loaded subs next to each other, this benefit is largely lost. This is not something that can be done at all with a bass reflex or sealed design.

If this doesn't make sense, think of it this way: You have two single 18" bass reflex designs. When they are positioned indoors, next to each other in the middle, you're right - they will typically outperform the same two subs 10' apart. However, this isn't because the centered configuration is a "free" +3db's due to coupling; it's because the separated positioning can result in nasty room cancellations.

Here is an interesting read from This Article (http://www.zainea.com/mutualcoupling.htm)

2.3 Mutual Coupling

The concept of mutual coupling between loudspeakers is familiar to anyone who has mounted two loudspeakers close together. The power output of the two loudspeakers is approximately four times (+6dB) that of a single loudspeaker. Also, if you double the area of the diaphragm of

a loudspeaker drive-unit, given the same diaphragm velocity, the power output will again increase by +6dB. Reference to equation (2) shows that introducing a second loudspeaker close to a first will approximately double the pressure on each of the diaphragms, thereby doubling the power output of both loudspeakers.

What is perhaps less obvious however, is how introducing a distant second loudspeaker can double the power output of a loudspeaker. For the 3m separation and 0.15m radius of the pair of loudspeakers in the above examples, the magnitude of the pressure on loudspeaker A due to the operation of loudspeaker B is approximately one twentieth of the pressure on A due to its own velocity. How can an increase in pressure of 5% cause a doubling of power output? The answer lies in the phase of the two pressures. At low frequencies, the pressure on the surface of A due to its own velocity is almost in phase quadrature with the velocity - the radiation impedance is almost totally reactive - whereas that from B arrives almost in-phase with the velocity due to the propagation distance involved. Equation (2) tells us that it is only the in-phase part of the pressure that is responsible for power output. As the distance d is decreased, the magnitude of the pressure due to the second source increases but its phase approaches that of the pressure due to the velocity of the first source - the power increase remaining at +6dB but extending higher in frequency - until the "two close loudspeakers" situation exists. As can be seen from equation (3), the frequency up to which the mutual coupling occurs is determined by the distance between the two sources; as the propagation distance approaches half a wavelength the phase of the pressure from the second source is no longer in phase with the velocity. The distance over which mutual coupling occurs is known as the extent of the hydrodynamic near field of the loudspeakers.

^^And here's the moral of the story.

In a market where 80% of my competition does not even bring subs, I don't go crazy trying to get an extra 3 dB.

We all seem to get caught up in what we "should" be doing and sometimes leave common sense at the door. Good sound AND clean setup are equally important. Use good judgement... Most brides will not notice comb filtering, but they will complain about the giant box in the corner that is rattling her cake.

At the end of the day those of us running a business have many factors to consider when deciding on the "best" setup. What is important at one type of event may not be for another. The visual aspect of a setup is (I would argue) almost as important as the audio. There is always going to be trade-offs, but at a wedding- hide the sub, put them under your tops, whatever looks best as the performance of the sub is going to be adequate to do what you need it to do for that kind of event. You'd probably take a different approach at a school dance, or an outdoor festival etc. Just remember at the end of the day what's important and make your decisions to acheive that, even if you have to compromise "best practice" in certain areas. (as long as its not safety)

Also, if you double the area of the diaphragm of a loudspeaker drive-unit, given the same diaphragm velocity, the power output will again increase by +6dB.[/url]

This is the point that you are missing. Say you have a 10" driver powered with 1,000 watts. If you add another 10" driver powered with another 1,000 watts, you are getting +3 db from the doubling in cone area (but now off 500 watts each) and then +3 from doubling the power, for a total of +6.

You can also get this same ~ +6 gain from using a 15" loudspeaker instead of a 10" loudspeaker, which has a bit more than double the cone area, but does not require twice the power in order to keep the diaphragm moving at the same velocity.

If you double the drivers but do not increase the power, the diaphragm velocity of both drivers will decrease.

When I said the placement thing I didn't mention weddings, because of the reason of things being different each time. But dances, you want more output, and less power usage. Sorry, but I'm a creature of efficiency.

No one is arguing with the fact that center placed subs are typically better than separated. But your understanding of exactly why these efficiencies are the way they are is slightly off. I don't mean to come off as pretentious, but there is much more to coupling than you realize, so just be wary of that before advising others.

Pictures of a 18-years birthday party last saturday. Very divers crowd, but it turned out to be a lot of fun.
I used 2xQSC K10 + 1xK-SUB for sound, did the job easy for about 100 people. Pioneer MEP-7000 + DJM-5000, laptop with VDj for sound.

The guy at the turntables is not me, he was guest DJ-ing for a minute

the par 64's in the center are setup in a way that one hits the discoball in the center of the room, and the other turns on during the special dances as a spot. it turns out the venue director already had pinspots. :(

Not too bad! What are those speakers that you're using, though?

DJ Higgumz - Looks like a functional setup, I would just recommend a black table cloth and maybe even a pair of black skrims for your truss stands.

I plan on ordering some, my mom was using her black one yesterday. The tops are a kustom profile system one. The tripod has like a 10 degree tilt, but my friend set it up so the speakers look crooked. Its supposed to aim down.

Good job on listening to everyone's points about wires. Much better set up than the one you posted in other thread.

Time to add some more efforts to make it super clean. a black table cloth, if possible a facade. over all good job. good improvement. :)
