I've been asked to build a goalpost setup for lighting at an upcoming gig. It will 12 feet tall and 20 feet long. I am using all Global Truss F34 12" box truss. My only question is what would be better for the base plates? 3x3 steel bases? Or 1x4 steel bases mounted perpendicular to the horizontal span?

The 3x3 bases weigh twice as much as the 1x4s (98 lbs vs. 49 lbs., respectively), but the 1x4 would provide an extra foot in the direction such a structure would need it. Side to side such a structure stabilizes itself, but front to back is where the support is most needed.

I think I'm leaning toward the 3x3s, but wanted to get some expert opinions.

Note: Either setup would use sandbags, plus the lights would be equally distributed.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Either will be plenty stable. The 3x3's are more versatile, but trust me, are a b*tch to move around.

^^^ Agreed. The 1x4's are single usage bases. Go with the 3x3's.
