Also reaaaally enjoying the Swing Star Pt 2 track off that Terje EP - total cosmic disco bliss... such consistent quality from him, really adore his TT Edits series. Nice picks yourself man! Right, no fucking about, if you're into house/techno/dubstep/drum & bass/ anything remotely dark and hefty go and track this record down. It is a filthy fucking banger, it will destroy anything at fifty paces. It totally blew me away, I'm now hunting the rest of this guy's stuff down. The tune is not up on Youtube, so cannot post, but just go find and listen, I promise you will not be dissapointed.

I do hear that about the staff there sometimes, I've only been twice and I've had no problems. Then again I generally just flip through and pick out stuff, I rarely go in with a specific record I want to buy.

Only time I really talked to them was the first time I was there, bought about 10 records and one of the employees said "nice selections". Seems like a nice place to me and I always stop in when I'm in brooklyn. Considering what a niche market they serve I enjoy supporting them.

[Peacefrog, 2000]

Riding on the crest of a wave following the second of his well-received albums on Peacefrog, Kenny Dixon Jr. dropped this little gem as a single-sided 12-inch via his own KDJ imprint. Arguably his finest ever track, "J.A.N." (Just Anotha N!gga) sees the Detroit house pioneer cut up samples of The Electrifying Mojo's interview with Prince and make it sound like Mojo is talking about him instead. With a weaker musical backing, Mojo's aggrandisement could come across as trite, but the rugged rolling bassline that opens the track soon dispels any notion of mediocrity, with Dixon's tapestry of samples adding a sense of drama that finally lifts when the track flips into an irresistibly jazzy house jam.

I haven't bought any new wax in a couple of months 'cause i've been finding some great second hand vinyl, but a lot of those records would be in my bin.
Where do you order from?? we don't really have any record stores that would carry new underground house in Miami (even though everyone and their brother is a dj here) so i usually order from alldayrecords, halcyon or deejay.de

luckily, sf still has plenty of record stores. amoeba is one of the larger ones which stocks decent dance music (as well as a sizable collection of used stuff).

the owner started it as a mail order type business and opened the brick & mortar version about 3 months ago. he specializes in underground house/techno, disco edits, and other random quality stuff i.e. re-issues of classic soundtracks like bladerunner, le planete sauvage, afrobeat compilations, seminal hip-hop albums.

there's also 4-5 other places in the city that carry a decent stock of jazz, soul, funk, etc. - some more curated (groove merchant records (http://www.yelp.com/biz/groove-merchant-records-san-francisco) ), others with a larger stock that you'd need to dig through for a while to find gems (i.e. "the basement" (http://www.yelp.com/biz/101-music-san-francisco-3), jack's record cellar (http://www.yelp.com/biz/jacks-record-cellar-san-francisco) is another favorite).

occasionally i'll order stuff online - mostly i try to buy direct from the label (FXHE especially is really good about this, $7/EP, ~$11/LP with free shipping on orders over $20) although sometimes i'll go to dopejams.net or discogs for stuff i'm not able to find otherwise.
