Hey guys, a small computer speaker fell off the wall onto the tone arm of one of my technics 1200mk2's last night, it's very minor damage but causing the record to skip and the needle to pull back towards the start of the record rather than away.

here's a close up

The repairer in my town is expensive and takes a long time (month odd if not more). I'd rather attempt to fix this myself as is doesn't look huge. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks:)

you may be able to loosen that set screw a little at the top and drop the screw back into the bearing to make its straight again

id just replace the whole thing, its not TOO expensive to buy the parts and if you have minimal soldering experience you can do it. It is better to be safe than sorry, replace the parts :) The part that is bent is the gimbal screw. those are torqued to a certain tightness and if you mess it up it can damage the arm further. just replace :)

I would try to get the screw out and check the bearing. If the bearing is still good, and the screw comes out, just need to replace the screw. Easy enough. If the bearing is bad, replace the entire tone arm. If the weight of the object which fell on it was heavy enough to bend the screw and take out the bearing, odds are the the bridge is damaged also.

Replace the entire tone arm. The screw is machine set at the factory, and is near impossible to get it right by hand. Save yourself the headache.

It takes about 5 minutes to recalibrate these screws when done correctly. Just be sure to make a mental note of the depth of the set screw before removing as to give yourself a starting point. Too loose and the tonearm will have movement when pushed towards the bridge, and too tight and the tonearm will have noticeable resistance when tracking and will seem to force themselves into a certain position on the record.

In his defence there is some truth to what he's saying. Getting that screw tightened to just the right torque is a serious pain in the ass especially if you don't have the proper tools or if it's your first time. I'm not saying it's impossible, it just takes a lot of patients and headbanging:banghead:.

exactly and it doesn't cost THAT much for a replacement.

Does anyone know what the factory spec torque setting is?

Just so you know Patrick, I had that problem, asked DJF 1.0, and found that all I had to was reset the screw.......and stop f'kin with my decks if it wasn't necessary :)
