Would like to get an idea of what kind of DJs primarily use this forum. And thank you in advance for voting.

Yeah its family so it should be fine right? :) And..nor am I. I actually would like to be able to stay in the loop with other dance music DJ's on this forum. Maybe this poll will allow all types to begin networking as well.

I think you needed Mobile DJ vs. Club DJ - seems like that's what you were going for; "Dance music" vs. "Wedding" meh. people get confused ^^^^^

Wait you are 'told' what to play when you check out possible club gigs? Wow I would be put off by that.

Well, I'm a mobile dj, don't do clubs, and will play anything from country to bhangra to classical; anything from wedding to fashion show to houseboat party.

dance music only since it is also the only music i own that i consider suitable for DJing. i LOVE the culture attached to it. tried hip hop but it is more a thing i like to listen to rather than DJ with it. just not for me. house, trance, hardstyle, UK hardcore  weeeeeeee

And the Jesus poses. Never forget the Jesus poses.

I do a bit of both. I'm more passionate about playing my own style but have done a few weddings for friends & family. It's kind of fun but I wouldn't want to do it for strangers.

Ahh I haven't done the jesus pose yet. Need to work my way up to that one.

experimental/research DJ
hybrid scratch/controllerist/ipadist/abletonist/seratoist...DJ

i sit in my studio and develop devices & tools for DJs to utilize with the serato/ableton bridge, and use OSC networking to tie the system of iPads & macbooks together for live use.
everything from intelligent MIDI-driven DMX lighting software, to spatial mixing devices capable of diverting different sounds into different areas of the stereo field for "more simultaneous sound layering possibilities" whilst mixing (basically a super-pan device).

Oh yeah I do that all the time. When I'm bored.

But seriously - that sounds like fun, the lighting part specifically.

i guess it's a good thing i'm bored 24/7/365 :P

my lighting project, called ALIIVE (Ableton Live Integrated Intelligent Visuals Engine), will be distributed as a free Max4Live package to the community when it passes the testing stages :)

so far, it's passing with flying colours, so it should be soon!

I did the mobile thing for a long, long time... and I got burnt out. My mobile company's last gig was in December 2002, and since then I've only DJed at one wedding - in 2005, for my at-the-time day job boss's daughter. Other than that, since 2002, I've mainly focused on club gigs and specialty venue events. I still have all of the mobile gear that I used, and in fact I still purchase upgrades (especially more lights) here and there on occasion.

I have still felt that nearly-masochistic urge to go back into the commercial mobile DJ field for a few more gigs... but we'll see. If I do, it'll be a long time from now. I marked myself down as "Both" in the poll.

Same, done the mobile gig stuff though no weddings/birthdays. More like specialised events, the aim was to pay the bills. I also did some radio, sound engineering, web design, sound design and production jobs etc. Now I'm more towards doing edm only, I might be touring this summer if it goes according to plan.

dance music but mostly I want to incorporate the good parts of DJing into a concert production or even a sort of staged opera.

I am a DJ that is really open with genres and what I like to play. I do a lot of theme parties at clubs like 80's, 90's and more (in which I book the club, do the promo and walk with the cash). I am also a DJ that supports a hip hop MC by the name of "Ra Scion" whom is from the group "Common Market". It's not really a paying gig to support an MC, but the respect factor is where it is at for me. Ra Scion has to be one of the dopest MC's I have ever had the pleasure to deal with. Plus, I love to rock a Hip Hop show. I also spin house and pop music as well. I think concentrating on one genre is a mistake and to be a really well rounded dj, you need to experiment with other genre's.

I'm a mobile DJ with club experience. I used to prefer club because it was cool to me but became genre restricted. But now I prefer mobile because I can customize every gig to the client's personal taste!

I truly aspire to DJ in an open genre format: just mix good music. I specialize in hip hop, new wave, r&b, classic soul, funk, jazz, and rock.

I aspire to be a DJ who has people come to my venue to enjoy the music and experience it with others around them. Whether it's a chill set and you're lounging chatting with friends, or a hype set where you're dancing with others around you. I want to nullify the DJ 'idolism'. I want to be mixing above my audience, so I can look down to them and gain inspiration from their mood. So that they can't see me. They can just experience the music. With eachother. I want to provide a social experience where the true feeling of the night comes from how you interpret the music with those around you and not because DJ X was playing that night.

My love is edm, and my heart belongs to drum n bass. However, I have played different environments. I will play a charity event if asked, regardless of music desired. Once, a family member asked me to play a Labor Day party for 250-300 rednecks (lol) drinking moonshine. Mostly country and honky-tonk-type stuff. The music may change, but the idea of creating the setting does not. It was a great exercise as far as challenging myself to find what made them move.....aside from the 'shine.

That's spot on. Good stuff.

I agree 100%. When I started, it was easy to fall for the attention and the wow factor people gave me because I was a DJ. Soon that turned into arrogance, arrogance that went beyond what I thought my skills were. It has been 4 years give or take since my last gig, and this year I hope to become active once again and work on my craft. Become something fresh that sets me apart, while remembering something I forgot long ago... the night is not about the DJ, it is about the people at the venue and how they will remember the roller coaster you put them in musically.

I just started DJing clubs (I'm only 20 and there's only one club for 18+ thats semi decent here) but even as a "mobile DJ" all I was doing was playing for fraternity and sorority exchanges which was open-format but was almost all House, Hip-Hop, Top 40, and Dubstep so I would still consider that being a Dance Music DJ.

Though I do miss it being towards the end of an exchange and being able to play Blink 182 into Sum 41 into Fountains of Wayne into some Journey and having the place go apeshit.
