You ideally want both, but it depends where you're mixing. If you're living in a busy apartment complex, headphones may be better for your neighbors. I always like having physical monitors because they allow you to hear how the music sounds in a room setting compared to closed-off in your headphones.

Either of these set-ups can be had for under $200 new if you shop around, I'd personally want to spend upwards of $500-1000 for a good set of studio monitors.:

For making music I use the Yamaha's 50 monitors and Audio technica 50s cans .
For djing krk 6 and pair of old technics cans
When doing either djing or making music I use both .

Funnily enough I am (hoping) getting these for christmas!!

Thanks for the other options guys! And I live in a student house atm, so loud music is very optional indeed :tup:
