so i was throwing on some lorde finesse

"theres a party over here"

and my boy was like "this shit just sounds corny"

i was like

but i kind of felt where he was coming from in that once you get to a certain era youre just automatically reminded of parodies in movies with the stereotypical rap pattern. like "ayo my names ______ and im here to say... i spit rhymes in the most amazing way....."

so with that said how far back can you listen to rap before youre just like "this is too oldschool for me"

It's never too old school for me.

I was listening to some Gangstarr today and did the same thing. I still love "Code of the Streets" though. I will still play some nwa, tribe, etc. Like you said, some of the older "classics" are just getting to the point where the really do just sound old. I'll always have a love for old school though. There's just something about that era.

Yeah, I agree that corny rap isn't an period specific thing. From 79 till present there has been corny rappers. One of the worst disses you can get as a rapper is when you are called "corny rapper"
Most novelty rap is corny. Like Rappin' Rodney (Rodney Dangerfield) Rappin' Ronnie (Dude that sounds like Ronald Regan) Rappin' Duke (dude raps like John Wayne). I wouldn't consider Lord Finesse in that category, he's pretty dope all around and as real as it gets.

Some corny raps I love too, some of the early 80s anti-drug raps were super corny but there is a playful innocence and somehow simultaneously a humorous seriousness to them.

That's just the newer generation coming into they own. Younger people than them in 20 years will be saying the same about them - I mean hell... this generation has nicki minaj & lady gaga....

Madonna and MC Lyte didn't act THAT crazy... lol ;)

I think some early 80s hiphop gets on my nerves. Some though.

I don't know man. to me a classic tune is a classic tune, regardless of age.

This isn't really the forum for this question. For most of us, our palates are refined enough to appreciate the old stuff. But yeah, I got friends who are not educated on the subject who would think all that old stuff is corny. And when I play out I got to be careful with some jams because I know people would hear them as corny. Jam on it- not corny. What people do for money- a little corny. Jack of Spades- not corny. Dope Beat- a little corny. A lot of Big Daddy Kane and Biz Mark cuts come off as corny to folks. Ain't no half steppin- not corny. Albee square mall- a little corny.

Again, to me it is all gold, but the general public doesn't get the old school really, except for the unassailable classics.

Mel Brooks' "It's Good To Be The King" is what popped in my head when I was reading this thread.

i agree that a lot of new shit sounds corny but i meant corny more in a sense that it reminds you of bad hip hop/rap parodies from the 90s except its an actual serious track

whoa whoa whoa...certainly some corny ass verses have been spit but I'm not sure you can mention Lord Finesse or Slick Rick in this thread at all. Guru...ok he's spit some pretty bad lines in his day "So speed on...before you get peed on" (for example) but his catalogue is far from corny and he shouldn't be mentioned here either.

I'm not really with this thread at all. Someone earlier said Gangstarr is "just getting old" and that's bullshit to me. Good music doesn't "get old" like the shit coming out right now with a shelf life of 15 minutes. Good music is timeless and it's shit that will bump for as long as humans have speakers. Finesse was a pioneer who's got verses that will hold up EASILY against emcees selling music right now. Corny? nah...he (and others) represent an era that had no tolerance for corny emcees. The passing of time doesn't change anything about the quality of the music they were making, the only thing that changes is the listeners ears.

I was at a concert this past weekend and Finesse was DJ'ing. Got to say he even has skills behind the decks. He played some "Nice n Smooth" and I immediatly thought of this thread. Some of their tracks are pretty corny....well actually most of them are, but they're still fun.

Yeah, I know what you saying but as a hiphop dj I think we should always look for more behind tracks than just their function in the club. This one I think is kinda dope especially on doubles. I'm already picturing the juggle patterns possible.

lord finesse corny? i recommend you immediately stop hanging out with said 'friend'

shoot man i dont know when it exactly went downhill..like dj P i find myself digging for older stuff mostly from the 90's
i miss mtv raps :( i dont even listen to the radio or whatever they got on now...mac miller, curren$y, the jet life or whatever shit asap and wiz... lol @ wiz for freestyling songs
dude its garbage back in the day with the freestyle ciphers and would get ripped in half.. also miss some of the classic hiphop beefs it was just an era of bboying and stuff and i really
try and reflect that in the runs i choose to play just because that radio rap or hip pop they play now is just straight up booty

Lol I love gangstarr. I was just thinking of how corny the weird voice in Skillz sounds. Also, I'm 25.

This^

I try to avoid most top 40 hip hop songs now. Don't get me wrong, there are still some good ones, but a lot of the stuff that has been pushed out lately is straight garbage. For instance, Drake- I'm so proud....that first verse...wow...

The new Big K.R.I.T. album though, which he put out for free no less, is pretty damn good.

yeah i gotta agree with non, how the hell you going to say finesse and slick are corny as compared to what's out now? just stop stop stop. i think every eras popular acts sh!t on today pop. it almost seems like everybody decided that lyrically we are going to take two giant steps backwards for the most part. like ghost said dumbin the lyrics down for the masses. i understand it is a business decision, they have mouths to feed. (and i am speaking in general terms, i know there are exceptions and i enjoy a lot of stuff even the new stuff, but to call out older stuff just seems wrong).

i have made this comment before on the interwebs, but the hip hop community treats its stars like old strippers and pornstars, (not that they should be treated bad just can't get excited about a 40 year old stripper/pornstar). other genres don't seem to do this as much and it is sad.

and i listen to the old stuff curtis blow, afrika bam, ultra etc.

Go see the Doctor and Wild, Wild West were kind of corny when they came out, but Kool Moe Dee is fcuking hardcore bro, they used to play tracks like below at raves here back in the day believe it or not. His battles are LEGENDARY for a start and novelty records were the order of the day in the 80's (Inspector Gadget anyone?) until Public Enemy bust out and changed the game, literally not listened to hip hop for 20 years but I'll be fcuked if somebody is coming along and calling Kool Moe Dee corny and I'm not going to say anything.
