Hi, I purchased my first lighting (on a budget of 120 and below) and got the Chauvet Min Laser FX 2.0 which can be found in this link http://www.guitarcenter.com/Chauvet-Min-Laser-FX-2-0-107436222-i2266913.gc

The thing is, you have to place it within two inches of the speaker (not even on top of it) for the mic to pick up the sensitivity. I'm going to be in a dorm, and want to sometimes jam out to some music at a relatively low volume, but I want a lighting that picks up the sound. Any recommendations from Guitar Center? Thanks!

If you're playing music soft enough that that light won't pick it up unless it's within 2 inches of a speaker, no other light is going to be much more sensitive. My friend has the blue version of that laser and it's pretty damn sensitive.

Most of those onboard mics are set to pickup specifically on bass frequencies. If you are keeping it quiet it's hard to pickup on those frequencies.
