Currently consists of an American DJ Vertigo Tri-LED, and a ADJ Micro Galaxian lazer. They really highlight each other in a venue. Setup is slowly expanding on my small budget  Currently I mount them either under the speaker trees or on a tree I borrow from my school.

I'll get some shots up from my gig later this month, they'll hopefully show what these things can do:)

Looks good. I was very much thinking of purchasing a couple of these lasers. How do you like it disbjohn? Did you end up filing for a variance? I ended up purchasing 2 American DJ Liquid sky lasers because of the whole variance thing "and I'm not a big ADJ fan". But I do have to say the liquid skys are actually pretty decent for the money. That X-Laser Mobile Beat RGB looks awesome, there is just a lot of stuff to take into consideration when dealing with lasers. I still wonder if I should have went that route, once again, looks good!

Thanks Adam. I did file the variance. The kit that x-laser sells makes it really easy to file for the variance. Mine is submitted and am just waiting. i heard it may take awhile to get everything all said and done, but as long as you have filed you are ok. Since it is a high-powered laser, you do have to take more precautions such as minimum height above audience as well as properly marked warning signs of high-powered laser in use. All the information is included in the kit and on a disc when you buy the product.

Custom monogram and pattern lighting on the ceiling. Unfortunately the leko with the monogram was lamped @ 375w to shine on the floor directly below where the entrance was. The client wanted it changed at the last minute and we couldn't swap lamps to something bighter due to limited power issues. Still looked good in person at the tables and dance floor.

Thanks for the info John. I was wondering how "tricky" it is to get the variance. It was a little worried about spending that kind of money, then having trouble with getting a variance, then thinking, maybe I should have gone the other route. Which I did, to be safe, but someday I may like to sell the ADJ Lasers and upgrade to these. Like you said, as long as you are safe and keep the laser above everyones head/not pointing at anyone, it really isn't rocket science. You just have to take extra precaution when using stuff like this. It is not like an normal ordinary light.

I really like how the RGB can produce the different writing and everything, that is really cool. Is it tough to program it to write different things on the wall, etc...? Thanks John,

I'm currently running it DMX with the built in programs that the unit has. If you want to fully customize and run your own custom programs and designs, you will need an ILDA software like Quickshow ($600). It isn't that much harder than programming a light show for ShowXpress. I am looking into that if I do start doing more shows with the laser and customers are looking for more customized animated text or logos.

I'd say it's much easier than ShowXpress. Doesn't get any easier than Quickshow.

I also posted this in the "show your DJ setup". But this is what I have running in my loft, with an emphasis on the lights. It's all programmed through LightJockey 2. I have a ton of sequences programmed; but am still building up a library of cues and need to move on with statics, flash cues and cue lists.

The entire thing is controlled via my iPad. I used the Lemur app to design an interface to control Arkaos running on a Mac Mini (my home theater Mac, connected to the projector) using OSC, and the same interface has panes for LightJockey running on a different machine (using MIDI). I also use the free add-on "FaderS" program to control sub-groups with touch faders in the Lemur app.

Yes, kind of insane to have in ones house, but it's fun. I went with the Chauvet ColorBands because I can also use them as general lighting or accent lighting. I had an electrician run two sets of outlets up to the ceiling, one for the moving heads, and one for the ColorBands. I can therefore switch them on and off independently.

To further complicate things, I have LightJockey's DMX interface going to an Enttec ODE DMX to Art-Net interface. That sends Art-Net out over the network to another ODE on the other side of the room, that then sends DMX to various places using hard wiring and Chauvet D-Fi wireless DMX units.

This also allows me to run the Luminair App on my iPad. I have a bunch of cues set up on that app for switching the ColorBands to various scenes. Since it outputs Art-Net directly, I don't have to have LightJockey running to control those.

LightJockey is actually running on my Macbook Pro, inside of a Windows 7 VM under VMWare Fusion. Works flawlessly!

Lighting:
- Martin Lightjockey 2 DMX console
- 8 Chauvet Colorband Tri LED strips
- 4 Chauvet Q-Spot 260 moving heads
- 3 Chauvet Colorstrip Mini LED strips
- 1 Chauvet Colorband Tri LED strip

- 1 Chauvet Techno Strobe
- Chauvet GBC green/blue laser
- Chauvet Hurricane 1100 Fog Machine

A surprise Sweet Sixteen performed at the Riverwalck Restaurant in Perryville, PA. It was a fun group, who danced non-stop. Custom Lightscaping package included 12 Color changing uplights, and 4 computer controlled Moving Heads.

The ceiling was covered with tarps that hung down, with some areas drooping as low as 6 ft, making it tough to get my Moving Heads where I wanted them.

I already talked with the models about following the spots better. Next year the follow spots will be programmed a little differently, and the models are going to do a walk through with the lighting a night before, to make sure they are on their cue's.

I also need to graciously thank Lucas Prata, for allowing me to use his latest track in the video, I hope my extended remix of the song did it justice.

So watch the video, and let me know what you think of the video, and my first public remix.

slight noobish question here, but does this configuration not cause phasing having the bass woofers in front of the other speakers?

That is a very good question which I'm personally not 100% sure on, I am thinking yes, but normally we take bass out of the whole signal (making less come out of the speakers) and turning up the subs to try conquer the phasing stuff. Sorry, I am still learning about technicalities of sound. I hope this answer is okay :)

I gotta get a few pics of the ETC system in the theater. We run mostly conventionals (Source 4 Pars/Parnels/Lekos/Cycs/etc...) but we just got in 5 Elation DLED RGBAW Strips and I bring my Chauvet movers in when necessary. All of it is usually run off of our ETC Element 40, but we've been experimenting with ARTNET and other DMX over Ethernet alternatives.

I'm not a DJ as most of you know. This was the largest sound and lighting system I ever had out on tour. Late 70's to mid 80's. This shot is at the Omni in Atlanta with Teddy Pendergrass.

Dang, that be some high class fanciness right there.

My area could never support a setup as nice as that but I still manage to have the best lighting setup out of the few people around. I did a junior high dance last weekend and managed to get some high resolution pictures to. It was not my best setup as I still need to get a light or two, one of the scanners broke mid gig as well, and of course my Chauvet H2D is still broken so I had to resort back to fog.

I know it does not compare to most of the setups on here but I think it would look about fifty times better with actual truss instead of the cheap 10ft ones.

Oh yeah, here is my crew member/helper and me. I am the one on the left.:P

Well more like mostly working, They need new Y position motors that run 80 a piece but the good news is I am getting grouped up with a good friend and DJ that does a lot more events more often and brings in more than I could so working together we will be unstoppable!

I also have a wedding coming up in June that I plan to get some bar wash lights to light up the sides of the building (outdoor) which I will then use on the truss from then on and remove the color 150's or at least find a different place or setup to use them in.

Kirk,

That setup would look much better if you removed some lights. I'd take some of the random ones you have, sell them, and invest in some matching ones so that your setup is symetrical.

I'd rather see four scanners and some wash lights than 8 non-matching ones.

Capt. Kirk
04-25-2012, 04:44 PM
That's what I plan on doing. I plan to get the light rails, another LX-10, then another Vertigo so I can change out setups from being things like all LED, Scanners and wash only, halogen based only, and so on.

I myself don't like having just one light per type, I think it just looks bad but it comes down to money.

As for adding another scanner I don't fully want to since it would mean sinking 200-400 for another two pack of them since that is how they sell them. I also should mention that for the most part I never have all of the lights on at once. I turn certain ones on and off as needed. It is defiantly not perfect.

So any recommendations for light rails that would be around 100-150 a piece that could uplight a building that is about 15 feet tall or am I gonna need to up the price paid to reach the 15 foot height.

If you save a little more for a 'light rail' i would suggest picking up the Color Rail by Chauvet, it seems to be the 'go to' washlight in bar/rail form, im saving up for a couple :D cheers

I was actually looking on Musicians Friend and found them. Same power as the ADJ ones but 50 dollars cheaper at 149 so those are most likely what I will be buying. Any dealers on here that are able to sell them for at a lower price or know where I can find them for cheaper?

if you find that deal again you should post it up, theyre 249 at musician friend at the moment and thats the price ive found them going for, i say a deal on eBay that was 187 but thats the cheapest ive seen them new

EDIT: you might be thinking of the color stripe and not the colorrail?

Capt. Kirk
04-27-2012, 07:54 PM
Oh, yeah I was looking at the colorstrip. It seems awfully close when just looking at the picture. Would a Colorstrip do what I need it to do? I don't need it to fully uplight the 15 feet clearly just enough to make it look good.

jlcpremier

Personally for a little more money, I would go with the Colorrail. The way the LEDs are arranged makes it way more versatile then the Colorstrip, and I think from the specs it's brighter as well. The problem I had with the Colorstrip is the LEDs are arranged in sections of RGB, which doesn't give you a whole lot of flexibility in DMX with chases, whereas the COLORrail has 8 segments which can be set to any color.

Check out this thread I made for an in-depth look at the COLORrail.

Looks good - not sure of the event type, but I would suggest setting your speakers up a bit higher. They look low, and low speakers will be muddied by the crowd by the time the sound gets to the back of the group on the floor. I also see a case cover on the floor in sight and some wires you could gaffe or velcro to your truss lifts....just suggestions.

Yeah due to some issues with the hotel, I ended up having to set up in record time. I only had just over an hour to get everything set up, so the cables were a bit messy. I should have put the case covers under the table though. The speakers on the other hand are right at ear level, but it probably couldn't hurt to bring them up another notch.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The backdrop looked great, only thing I could think of is either add more pars or switch to bars to et a more even wash. I don't know how big the show choir scene is in PA, but here in IL/MO its huge. I tour with a group for the entire season and manage and design their backdrops. That said, Im going to offer some advice in case your looking into starting to provide lighting and sound for an actual competition.

The truss in the back looks tacky as hell, for competitions its actually illegal for groups to use intelligent lighting here. Many groups have big sets here and there would be no way you could set any lighting behind the risers. Many people get around this by placing those lights along side of the stage.

As you didn't list front wash, I'm guessing you didn't provide that nor sound. So, if they just hired you to snazzy up their stage since they apparently don't have a backdrop what you did works.

Thank you notloc, They provided front wash with their in house lighting, they just wanted to add a little pizazz to their show. They don't have eny trussing above the stage. It is all 2" steel pipe hung by chains, and full of Leiko's, pars and RGBA floods. They used the schools FOH for sound, and students to mix it, and used the stage lighting for front wash. I need to purchase more totems, but he did want the pars behind the chorus for use as a blinder. I agree that the 8' arch did look a little out of place, but it works great right behind a drummer in the same configuration. Thanks for the tips, and send along any other advice, and pics if you wish, I am always looking to improve what I am doing. Thanks again.

Here are some various pictures of the group I work with. The ones of the stage are from our Invitational we hosted this year. It was the first time we built our an entire stage from our house stage and people loved it. Lots more room....though a girl still managed to walk off the side :freak:

They did a front truss and back truss and hung the rag all right from the rafters. I wasn't happy with them using moving washes as front light, they needed a lot more pars.

I now have 30ft of 14'' triangle truss which I had 10 originally. I thought it was too wimpy, but on the new ones the load rating stickers were on it. on a 40ft span it holds 450 on center, or 550 distributed. not as strong as global but suits my needs.

I also got freestyler with the dmxKing usbmicro dongle, so now my lights are dmx.

I have a 10ft truss, x2 Revo Raves, x1 Triple Flex, x1 Fusion FX Bar 3, 2 micro galaxians, x1 triball (useless), a couple useless chauvet moonflowers and foggers. I love the pic from your set up. I really like the idea of projecting light out and around the crowd and needing a light or two that can do it. In my uber limited experience it seems that the Raves and other REvo products are good at short range but not over a crowd.

I'd also like to be able to shift the type and style of lights as the music changes.

Do you mean an effect light that can throw light a larger distance than the Revos? Then I'd suggest a couple of scanners or moving heads, much wider range. If your looking for just light to fill a room go with a couple of LED Slimpar (or equivalent) washes, it sounds like you have the effect lights covered but no wash aside from that Fusion FX.

I'd also like to be able to shift the type and style of lights as the music changes.

You can do this and way more through DMX. It's a lighting controller where you can control colors, motions, and turn on/off lights. Think of it like a DJ Mixer for lighting.

10' truss.

6 - Blizzard 3NX's
6 - Chauvet Pinspot 360's
4 - Martin Minimac profiles

http://youtu.be/pDCRGeV1JsQ

This is normally for bands, my actual DJ setup will be:

4 - Blizzard Fab5's
4 - Martin Minimac Profile
2 - Chauvet Hemisphere 5.1
2 - TBA fixtures

That will leave a dozen 3NX's for uplighting.

The beam angle on them is very small and even when hitting a surface far away it still looks small. I haven't found a away to limit the range of motion on them so as of now I have to always set them behind me so they don't flash me or the DJ in the eyes. The drawback to not limiting the range comes into play again with the fact that the lights seem to shine away from the dance floor way too much. I e-mailed Chauvet last week and still no response as to what I can do to limit the range. I changed the pan and the tilt and that still didn't seem to work. Even my ADJ X-Move does a better job and ensuring the light shines ON the dance floor. What I do like about it is that when you link them and set one to reverse and select certain auto programs it gives off a decent show. I took the screw the comes with them that is used to mount them on speaker stands because I find it hard to believe anyone will put them under the darn speaker. If you do that the light will be right at eye level and the light also will get ate up by the crowd since it isn't over their heads. I'm pretty sure I'll make a good ROI on them from my rentals but I still plan to get 2 or 4 q-spot 160

Something like DMXIS would allow you to define the ranges, but then its not as random. I'm looking at getting some as my next upgrade. I like the nice tight beam.

Current full rig:

2x Elation Vision Scan 250
2x Chauvet Q-Spot 150 LED
2x Blizzard Lighting StormChaser RGBW
6x Chauvet SlimPar 56 RGB
1x Blizzard Lighting SnowBall RGBW
All Global Truss trussing/tripods.

I also own additional ADJ/Chauvet scanners and barrel scanners for when I need some extra coverage.

Next up are some pars for washing the crowd, as I've repurposed the StormChasers for my booth facade.

And I never got to use these at a gig. Nobody seems to want lights. I've had these for just under a year now without using them once other than testing them in my home.

The 350 spots are only 22lbs and centered on the truss therefore not generating any moment outside of the truss. They are bolted to the top plate and I use the 24"x24" aluminum base. Its very stable and I haven't had any issues. To knock the totem over it will take more than the average walking-into force.

Is this classified as mobile anymore? Event I hosted in Richfield wisconsin with Knuckle Children, Apple Country, MannyFresh, Deejay Flacko, Kayjay, Bobby Burm, and Praktis. Very stressful day to say the least, I could not get in to the hall as early as I wished, and as I'm setting up, I put everything together only to find my scanners don't respond to DMX... pars work fine with it. Sound active I guess :(. I felt like a pro running a FOH setup using my audio snake, I was about 50-60 feet back from the stage off to the side. Did some up******. New truss, new fixtures. I have 2 8' sections of new aluminum truss. If like to find a 3' piece. I've contacted the manufacturer directly, so I'll see how that goes. The 3' would give me the following truss lengths:

8'
11'
16'
19'

In the meantime I decided to see what I could do with an 8' section, so here it is.

5 Blizzard Fab5's
2 Chauvet Spot Duo's
3 Chauvet Mini Kintas
2 ADJ Jellydomes
DMXIS
Chauvet Hurricane 1600 Flex

The scenes are a bit long, I have the changes set for 8 measures at 120bpm I could change it myself, but doing that and holding the camera is a bit tricky.

I'll be using this setup this weekend for a wedding!

I'd strongly suggest adding another stand in the middle for support next time or cutting down your span.

Haha it does look like it's sagging but DJNeedleSharp is correct. What you're seeing are two separate truss systems entirely. Behind the drape are (4) Applied Electronics L-16 stands. Each truss is 26' in a slight V pattern. I could add two more sections on each side and about 3X the lights and still be within specifications. The truss is MILOS M290B. It's actually more than capable of supporting that system in one stretch but I'm very conservative. Center point rated load at 54' is 462lbs and 1/3 point load is 346lb.

Yes. If you ever get booked in that room bring lots of extension cable. I've been trying to get them to install a 50 amp range plug for years and have even offered to supply the parts with no luck. Downstairs, in the pavilion, they have at least 8 separate 50 amp plugs. I just don't get it :)

No kidding. 50A makes life a lot easier. One bar in town moved their stage. I really got after them about the importance of 50A and they put an outlet on the stage.

Yay!!

I've used Chauvet ShowXpress for years, but I'm switching to Compushow by Elation. Apparently a new Chauvet ShowXpress is being released this year, but to be honest, I'm done with not having the same features as some high-end boards or an interface that looks like it was made post-2006. That's why I wanna go with Compushow.

zero issues with reliability so far. here is a video of one of the first shows using software. the lasers are controlled via a separate computer and Pangolin software. the Pars on the side walls are part of the venue, and the glitches in the side pars have nothing to do with our show.
the designing of the lights needs a lot of work. This was at the very beginning of the learning curve.

EDIT: this is either the first or second time ever using Freestyler. I dont have a current video, maybe I will take on tomorrow.

I had to stop the audio man. lol. must have been way loud. I like the programming basics you had already gotten there, which I don't yet have with my elation pro yet. although I would like to know what your pars were as well as your 3 bar lights I see. I really didn't like the looks of the bars because they seem to completely destroy the effects of the other lights, although it may just be from the camera, we all know nothing sounds or looks like it does in person. just curious is all. is that you DJn?

allensmusic
04-10-2014, 04:19 PM
I am not DJ'ing, that is DJ Risk One. he is a west coast DJ.
the bars that are obliterating the video are static fluorescent black lights. they were really not even noticeable to the naked eye, and looked horrid on film. that was the first and last time using them that way. The LED par 64's are a generic chinese par
shortly after that gig I was hired by the venue to be the sound engineer, so I had nothing to do with the way it sounded that day.

Like any software it takes a while to figure it out but the profiles for each fixture are available online for almost any popular fixture. once you have the profiles it is point and click to make a show.
I have to set up the lights while programming, some people can program a show without anything hooked up

allensmusic
04-10-2014, 04:29 PM
I did not buy those lights specifically to make a good show. I had some pars for uplights, and a few old halogen scanners, and a few other misc lights that I put all together to make a show because quite frankly, nobody else in town has even that much lighting.
The show has evolved dramatically, we now use an LED curtain hanging from the truss, there are a couple Blizzard QFX movers, etc.

DJEcho

would love to see some more recent stuff now or later or whenever. makes sense for them to be UV black lights, they seemed ridiculously bright. I'd have to set the whole rig up and then program. but I keep basic basic stuff on the board. like all lights red, all lights blue, sound active, slow mode. that's about it for me right now. got a prom saturday. I'll throw some vids and pics up of that event. thanks for spending the time man. around here if you have a single moving head light you are big time. lol. damn hick folks.

allensmusic
04-10-2014, 05:19 PM
I now have a small midi controller hooked up to the lighting computer and it has basic buttons for colors and strobes and stuff. so the program can run on sound active then hit buttons for effect to go with the music. like a slow color to the beat during buildups, then white when it hits the crescendo then back to sound active

Hey, does anybody have experience with these two fixtures? I'm wondering if the Mezmerizor does everything the Kapivator does, plus a bunch of extra starfield patterns? It seems that way, but it's not entirely clear from the available documentation.

Also, what is the approximate maximum beam coverage angle for these two lights? Does one light have wider coverage than the other?

Thanks! Pete

I made my final switch away from non-dmx, auto play, and halogen lighting a little over a year ago. i am still on the learning curve for the light shows. the lasers are controlled via pangolin and pangolin can be triggered via dmx but i have not yet done so.
I might add that one of the two lasers in this picture is from Ntertainment.

A little adaptation of existing T-Bar stands to be similar to the ADJ Light Bridge One that I finished the other day. Still gotta grab myself 8 u-bolts to lock that truss down, but overall, I'm satisfied with the overall setup so far.

I fillet welded welded a 1' piece of 1-3/4" Telespar (sign post) to 1.5" schedule 40 pipe to make the adapter. A fillet weld ensures a higher strength joint. The regularly spaced holes are advantageous, and allows many sizes of truss to be used with them, ensuring across the board compatibility. You can even use a span of pipe across to make a frame for a screen, etc. You can usually find short chunks of Telespar at scrap yards, and also asking around when road crews change out signs and the like.
