I have no formal Music education, but I've been "Dj'in" since 96'.
In my opinion, don't over analyze the music, don't make it into a science.
Keep the BPM, i count to an 8 bar, figure if my track will sound good on the first beat, or the 5th. I try to phrase match or "melody" match, so it varies on each individual track.

Again, i have no formal Music education or training. I like to keep things simple... "Ignorance is bliss", but my mixes sound OK

Just listen to the dam music, it tells you when its 8 bars, 16 bar, 32 bars, etc. The music normally adds something or takes out something. Just feel it, if you cant feel it then I don't know what to say lol.

Plus no one here is going to tell you how to transition, tips yes. But, sometimes you gotta try and figure out things for yourself. Especially since you call yourself a "house dj" you should atleast know the basics of mixing.

1. To clarify...

Ok, so I mix progressive and electro house and I need some help on making transitions.

Can any of you guys help me on how to make great house transitions? I've heard you should drop the intro of the second song 16 counts before the track outro. I don't mean only mixing the intro with the outro, I wanna mix in the new track in about 3/4ths of the way through the first song.

2. Make sure you understand that 90% of prog/electro is based around 32 count phrases [eight 4-count bars]. You want to make sure [in most circumstances] that you drop the new track at the beginning of a 32 count phrase where the old track WOULD begin a 32 count phrase. So in essence - the phrase timings are always lined up.

3. Note that Ean says that the intro of the second track is 16 counts long [in #3], which is why he drops it 16 counts before the end of the first track. Keep in mind, that's not always the case, it's more often than not 32 counts..... ACTUALLY, watching it again - he actually DOES do it 32 counts before the end... I think he just misspoke.

For EQ mixing - a general rule [it's so basic, dont LIVE by it, but it's generally accurate] Hi = snare, hats, any really high pitched bleeps or whatever, mid = synths, vocals, most melodic instruments, and low = your bass, sub bass, sometimes really low synths.

I figured out a little technique called 'song focus.' Basically - in any part of a song there either is a focus or not. During intros and outros when it's just the drums/perc/whatever, I consider the kick the song focus. Other times, a song focus will be lyrics, or a melody. Things people would be paying the most attention to when they are listening to it. It's never more than one thing, either. You may have a melody going at the same time someone is singing, but pretty much 100% of the time, one is toned back a bit to keep focus on the other.

The trick to EQ mixing, as far as I'm concerned [just from experience], is to isolate a single song focus using the eq. Using the idea of hi-mid-low/ hats-vox-kick, if you go to layer a track, figure out what the song focus is in the first track, eliminate anything on the second track that will take away from the song focus using EQ. It's also pretty solid practice to keep only one kick at full eq. You can make a switch between kicks at the end of a 32 count phrase, gradually, or suddenly, however you choose to do it, by using the low eq. Sometimes the highs fit well together, and sometimes they dont, if they don't decide which one you want to keep, EQ the other one out. Same goes for anything in the mid.

I totally thought the same thing!

This shouldn't be in techniques, this should be in the beginners section.

Is there a section remedial enough for the OP?

Also, since Guetta is his idol, shouldn't we just be teaching him to play a pre-recorded mix?
