Hi guys! Nice to see DJF back after months of waiting.

Anyway, since the forum is reborn, I thought of creating my thread of refurbished, customized, modified, repainted, and repaired 1200/1210 turntables.

All these pictures are also seen at my site, Works1200 (http://works1200.weebly.com)

just a little spraying hint for parts. I like to use a screen table. Or you can use an old screen door/ screen from a window - lay it between 2 chairs and place all the parts your going to paint on it. Spray the color you want, but the screen will assist in no overspray and drying times.

-replaced new pitch control

-eliminated the ground wires

I know the this is not the best color but it's what the client requested. Lavender! The gloss isn't too noticeable because of its weird color. He also wanted the platter painted to white.

Other things I did were:
-replace the power stobe LEDs to bright blue
-33/45 rpm LEDs to green
-Pop-up lamp bulb conversion to bright blue LED
-pitch control calibration
-overhauled and calibrated the tone arm assembly
-ground wire elimination and modification
-rubber base repaint
-new aluminum pitch decal

These decks belongs to popular club here.

Looks like these decks have been submerged in the ocean for months. They look like oysters have lived on them.

Look who's back!

Remember these decks I refurbished in Feb 2009?

http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?292-Works1200-The-Technics-1200-1210-specialist-refurb-thread&p=2831&viewfull=1#post2831

Well, it's back after being abused (again). The former club (Embassy) where these decks are used have three rooms. Although the club itself have 4 pairs of Technics including 2 limited edition MK2s, this pair has been their favorite to abuse. So the pair were often transferred from one room to another. Now, these are used in the new club called Republiq. So after 2 years, here is how it looks now. :freak:

March 2011 cont.

I had to disassemble everything and scraped the the frame to raw diecast metal including the tonearm assembly. But all the electronics are still in perfect condition. I only had to lubricate the spindle and re-calibrate the tonearm and pitch controls.

After a week of work, here it is now and I hope it stays in this new condition for a longer period. I used polyurethane automotive paint this time for more durability against scratches, bumps and chips.

Although mines aren't too bad. The pitch control is shot on them, due to humidity. Other parts might be affected as well, but I only noticed the pitch.. doesn't respond between +2 thru -3.

also, I've seen a few sites*, but which is the best for parts? Or do you use multiple ones, depending on part and/or sale.

Hey Rek, If it was non-responsive in short increments like +1 to +2, then calibration may be done. But from +2 to -3, that's way too long. Your pitch needs to be replaced. :)

yah, for sure it needs replacing. Large gap with no response.

Maybe rusted up and scraping the contacts would bring it back, but I doubt I can open the pitch slider without braking it. Also that replacement part is super cheap, for the MK2, so no point in going thru all that work.

Thanks Mark! Unfortunately, those decks are back to me for the third time. This time, the DJ (Rock-star wannabe) threw both decks on the stage and bounced off down to the dance floor. The tone arm pivot bearings are broken and the paint is severely damaged. But other than that, the decks are fine. Which just proves even more that Technics 1200s/1210s are really built like tanks!

WTF is wrong with theses people? Its not hard to tell these 12's are not stock and that somebody took the time to refurb them and customise them yet they still go out of thier way to F them up. It pisses me off. These decks in particular considering they're my favourites.

Not that you don't already know this but the work you do is amazing . Not that you don't already know that. I'm very curious as to what does a pair of 1200's cost to redo paint, LED's and pitch etc etc? it must cost a ton just to ship them to you. I understand if you don't want to post prices. You can always just shoot me a message.

When you scrap the tone arm assembly to paint, do you just mount it back up as is ? or is there some sort of calibration needed ?

Nicadraus, All your project look so fantastic, it is really a motivational thread. I am currently in the process of making some changes to my MK2's. Thanks! I would recommend either. You can also do a combination of both. Have it powder coated and clear coated with glossy automotive clear acrylic/polyurethane.

I am interested in, and i consider this an art form so there is some artistic creativity allowed :), making my tables unique and want that custom look. Price is really not that big of an issue, i don't wanna dump 1k in them but i wouldn't mind a few hundred (i have no idea how much it costs to do this). I like the blue ones that OP did, those looked great (light blue ones). Id be willing to let someone go a little crazy and do something off the wall? I have the super bright blue led's so white would even look good. Idk, I was going to get them powder coated but no one ever got back to me. I want them to look super awesome!

any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

Just finished these decks. Nothing fancy though.

Finished in automotive polyurethane gun metal and topped with clear gloss. Installed super bright white LEDs in the strobe, 33/45, & pop-up lamps. Replaced RCA cables & connectors, eliminated ground wire and took off the "click" bearing in the pitch.

Holy sheet Nic that gun metal black was soo nice!

Finally i've scored a 1210mk2 from ebay. too bad it's not in the best working condition as described, the height adjust & lock button has stuck, the 33/45 button is sticky & overall needs a major workover.
Not to mention scratches & bruises due to the damaged cover rubbing & rattling during shipping from UK to Malaysia. I've emailed the seller & hopefully we will sort things out, at least get a partial refund.
I wont send back the table, that would be uneconomical..but since it's here already i'm trying to restore it back to satisfactory condition.

In the meantime i'm researching on how to dismantle everything & try to fix that height adjust.
is it possible to ship only the cabinet to you for the paint job? coz i dont have confidence to ship the whole thing because i dont have a robust case. besides, it's heavy LOL.

Up****** this thread.

Same post in this thread (http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?12136-Saving-a-Club-Hero-%28Technics-Refub%29&p=133069#post133069).

My recent work...

These Limited Gold edition 1200s (110v) belong to a popular club here in Manila, Republiq. Before that, they were used first in Temple Bar, Greenbelt (from 2002), Embassy Superclub (2004-2010), and Republiq (2010-2012). Unfortunately, the condition was so severe and so many parts had to be replaced. The power supplies were also busted as well as the drive ICs because they were plugged into a 220v outlet.

As I finished cleaning the platter and repainted the dots, I started to reface them. Unfortunately, this is what happened:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a305/Nicadraus/Technics/P1020028.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a305/Nicadraus/Technics/P1020030.jpg

The gold/chrome platting has peeled off. I had worked on a pair of Limited Gold edition before with almost the same condition but never experienced anything like this. On close up pictures, you will see that the aluminum diecast metal had also been affected by the corrosion. Powdery white substance can also be seen as a result of the reaction. Some parts of the platter's upper & lower lips and dots were eaten by the corrosion.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a305/Nicadraus/Technics/P1020029.jpg

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a305/Nicadraus/Technics/P1020031.jpg

The platting on the start/stop and 33/45 button have also been chipped. So I replaced both platters and start/stop, 33/45 assemblies with non-platted parts.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a305/Nicadraus/Technics/P1020027.jpg

Some of the gold platting on the pop-up lamp canister and strobe canister, have also tarnished and faded so there was nothing more I could do to save them unless have them chromed and electro-platted again which will cost a lot.

-Scraped and sanded the body and repainted to black. Wrapped with carbon fiber vinyl sticker (for automobiles)
-Repainted rubber base cabinet
-Cleaned & rebuilt the tonearm assembly and calibrated
-Replaced RCA cables and connectors
-Eliminated ground wires
-Replaced all LEDs to super bright white (strobe, 33/45. pop-up lamp, pitch indicator)
-Repainted and refaced the 1200 Limited plate badge
-Rewound power supplies and drive ICs replaced

Here is the finished project:

They were used in several clubs and bars. Moved from one room to another to outdoor, back to indoor. I have serviced those decks before. Changed pitch controls, tonearm rests, calibration, RCAs and a few more. Unfortunately, the DJs using them are just too abusive. There were also some spills of drinks that actually have dried on them and inside.

wondering the same...and also what type of paint you used to do the rubber base?

djlotus

You can never go wrong with hand sanding. It is more effort but some of the nooks and crannies are hard to get too.

For the base, you can use a rubberized black to get the same look and keep the original texture.

I use 3 grits. 400c, 800c & 1000c. Better if you can scrape the paint to metal. :)

Don't go lower than 400 because you will eventually scrape the diecast aluminum metal and may leave deep scratches. Use a sanding backing pad. To make your sanding even, smoother and easier.

Here are some pics of my personal decks which I recently customized to blue.

Originally, this was an MK3D (Japan version of the M3D), 100v

-Frame cabinets were powder coated to soft blue
-Tone arm components were repainted to royal blue with automotive polyurethane paint
-Platters have been lightly refaced
-Rubber bases were also repainted
-Replaced the pitch ornament/aluminum pitch decal to black
-Replaced both pitch controls (for M3D/MK5)
-Ground wire eliminated
-Converted the power supply from 100v to 220v
-All LED lights replaced. Bright blue for the strobe and pitch indicator. Bright white for 33/45 rpm buttons and pop up/target lamp

I retained the original Technics RCA and connectors because they are still in very good condition. So there was no need to change them. Also, the MK3D has special gold RCA connectors so that's another good reason in keeping it. :)

Hope you guys like it.

Usually, decks like those came from old time clubs. They have been passed on from clubs/bars to second and third generations.

Thanks for viewing bud! :)

Browsing this thread for inspiration.
Tough decision though. I just scored a mint condition pair of M3D's and I don't know if I want to even paint them.
I'm personally not a huge fan of the stock silver, but it's tough to even consider opening these up.

Here are three decks brought to me by my friend. He wanted the pair finished in bright yellow while the other unit in flat black. All three decks were powder coated. But unfortunately, they sprayed a wrong shade of yellow so I had to top them off with automotive polyurethane paint to a brighter shade of flat yellow. The black on the other hand is untouched from the powder coat finish. All tone arm sections have also been repainted with automotive acrylic paints and re-calibrated. Pitch controls have also been re-calibrated. All lights are replaced. Bright blue LEDs in the strobe and pitch indicator, bright white LEDs in the 33/44rpm switches and pop-up target lamps. Brande new aluminum pitch decal ornaments were also replaced. I also fabricated a switch knob on the black unit, All platters were are re-faced and repainted.

Here's a pair I did for another client. They came in really looking bad. He wanted a black shiny paint. So that's what I did. Piano black finish using automotive polyurethane paint for the main cabinet frame and tone arm assembly. The rubber bases were painted in matte black, also finished with polyurethane paint. The switch assembly were replaced from MK2 to recessed/flushed knobs for M3D/MK5/M5G models. All lights were also replaced with UV colored LEDs. Platters were also repainted and re-faced (3-step). New aluminum pitch decal ornaments (black) were also replaced as well as new pitch controls. The RCA cables were also replaced and used original Monster Cable. Lastly, decal labels were applied.

Here's a custom pair of beat-up SL1200 my friend asked me to work on to match his set of Pioneer DJM900 platinum and CDJ-2000 platinum edition. So I had the main diecast frame cabinets chromed plated. Repainted and refaced the platters. Replaced all the LEDs to a combination of bright blue (strobe, 33/45) and bright white (pop-up lamp, pitch indicator). I also replaced the broken tonearm clips, pitch controls, aluminum pitch decal ornaments and installed new original Technics RCA cable and connector set. The tonearm base, bridge and swivel sections have been repainted to blue metallic. Rubber base cabinet were also repainted to matte black.

Here's a 30year old deck that was brought to me from Baguio City (250km from Manila) by a friend. He wanted to have it restored and customized. He said this deck has been with him and his late brother since the early 80s.

Like my usual works, the main diecast frame had been scraped to bare metal. Primed and painted to a shade of blue metallic that I personally mixed, then topped it with super gloss clear coat using polyurethane automotive paints. The tonearm section had also been painted to match the main body. This deck didn't come with a platter so I provided one. I also replaced the broken pitch control, tonearm clip/rest, one leg, switch knob, and aluminum pitch decal ornament. All lights have been replaced as well. Super bright white LEDs on the 33/45, pop-up lamp, and pitch indicator, while the storbe had been fitted with bright blue LEDs, RCA cables and connectors have also been replaced with heavy duty, high grade set. Tonearm and pitch control have been calibrated as well as the motor brake. Lastly, rubber base was lightly sanded and repainted to matte black.

how hard is it to take apart the tonearm to paint the pieces there?

As first timer? It was really difficult. Especially when building it back. There are so many things to consider. Calibration, proper placement, steps in putting the right parts, etc. I learned it the hard way because there wasn't any videos or tutorials at that time when I started doing turntables back in 2005. It took me more than a year to master the tonearm section.

Main body frame and tone arm section are finished in glossy metallic black using automotive polyurethane paint. Rubber base, pop-up lamp canister, tonearm seesaw and pitch knob have been painted to matte black. All light (strobe, 33/45, pop-up, pitch indicator have been replaced with super bright white LEDs. Applied black aluminum pitch decal ornament. Replaced RCA cables and connectors and eliminated ground wire. Removed bearing "click" of pitch control. Platters are repainted and 3-step refaced.

reallyyyyy nice jobs everybody.... especially that one for the frienddd and this is why i like the 1200, i've rebuild a stanton shittyoem. mostly from the inside , but that hugo 10kgs topplate is soooooooo shitty to work with, especially since my right hand doesn't work far from good(went through a window... everything was cut through). And i like the metal on the 1200 , from the inside it's a technical golden oldie, but reallyyy nice jobs, since you really have to be real carefull not to slip with your screw gear etc when putting the arm together.
I still don't know why somebody hasn't made a new power/motor pcb and made a new motherboard, since it ain't that hard, panasonic has no legal rights i assume and tuning ain't illegal, ain't there a couple of electronic brainiacs, then we can give it a shot. Ti and lt has brought out some real nice units for driving , controlling and feedback the rotorspeed. Cause those motherboards are a real ripoff, all internal boards are with powersupply ****** from the 70's. and what you're gonna do about five years when thre stuff worns out...

I have serviced this pair long ago back in 2008 for minor issues. They were originally used in Alchemy Club from 2007 to 2008, Then were transferred to Excess Club in 2010 until 2013. The new owner (Derrick Yap (of J Club, Cebu) sent me these decks for a full refurbishment. So I did a total restoration on them and repainted to Metallic Black in glossy finish using DuPont polyurethane paint. I also had to mix the right color for the tonearm. The M5G's color of the tonearm is silver with a hint of yellow. All LEDs are new. Pitch control & tonearms calibrated, RCA cables & connectors replaced with heavy duty & high grade, ground wires internally modified

August 2014

Here's one half of the actual SL1200 MK3 I used to practice and have developed my skills as a DJ back in the early 90s. I especially requested the late Angelo Castro, Jr. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angelo_Castro,_Jr.) (ACJ as we call him, who was also like a father to me) to acquire a pair of SL1200 MK2 during his Tokyo, Japan trip in 1991. When he came back a week later, he brought a pair of MK3 instead. I was overwhelmed and surprised, because it was the first time for me to see a black edition 1200. ACJ's son Angelo Diego Castro (a close friend of mine like a younger brother) brought me this and wanted to have it refurbished. It had been stored for more than a decade and the paint has also been severely damaged. Tonearm and pitch control were also out of proper calibration.

So after working on it, here it is now.

Finished in black metallic polyurethane super gloss paint. Strobe, 33/45 and pitch indicator LEDS have been replaced with super bright white while pop-up lamp was converted to bright white LED. I also applied a special aluminum pitch decal ornament used in the latest model of the SL1200 family, the MK6. Black with gold markings. Platter has been scraped, repainted and re-faced. Tonearm section repainted and re-calibrated. Pivot bearings have also been lubricated. RC cables and connectors replaced with internal grounding. Pitch control cleaned and calibrated. Spindle lubricated and Switch, Start/Stop, 33/45 assembly cleaned.

I'm very certain that ACJ would have been very happy to see the result if he were still alive.

Below are the before and after pics.

These decks were sent to me by owner (also a good friend) Atmospheres Club, Metro Center Hotel, Bohol, an island in the Visayas region (about 913km from Manila). He wanted them refurbished because he is passing them on to his son.

The decks were repainted three times before. Because when we scraped the paint, there were 4 layers of previous paints over its main diecast frame.

Main diecast frame and tonearm sections are painted in glossy blue metallic finish using polyurethane automotive paint. Rubber base are repainted in matte black. Platter stripped, repainted and re-faced. Strobe LEDs and pitch indicator are fitted with super bright blue while 33/45 and pop-up lamps were fitted with super bright white, RCA cables and connectors replaced with internal ground. Tonearms rebuilt and re-calibrated. One pitch control replaced and both calibrated. Applied new aluminum pitch decal ornaments and installed under platter halo.

This deck belong to another friend Brian Cua. It was one of the two 1200s used in Bed Club in Malate, Manila.

When fire broke in Bed, the firemen sprayed water in the 3rd floor and all of the excessive water flowed straight down in the 1st floor where the DJs booth was located. This turntable and it's pair were submerged and caught the debris from the fire rushed by the water. The pair had been there for quite sometime until the fire investigation was done. Brian asked me if I could still work on them and bring them back to life. So first thing I did was to check if the circuits of the main board was still working. Unfortunately, they were dead and the pitch controls too. It took me more than 2 years to find a surplus working main board. The tonearm section was in real bad shape. Tonearm clips were broken and pivot bearings were corroded with rust.

Main frame was scraped and repainted to super gloss white using polyurethane automotive paint. Same painting procedure with the tonearm section. Pivot bearings were thoroughly cleaned and removed the rust. Bearings were also lubricated and main arm was cleaned. The rubber base were painted to flat black and platter was scraped, repainted to white and refaced. New pitch control was installed as well as the aluminum pitch decal ornament. Strobe, 33/45 and pitch zero indicator were replaced with super bright white LEDs. Pop up lamp was also converted to LED. RCA cables and connectors were also replaced with high quality and durable ones, ground wire eliminated and internally grounded. Pitch knob was also repainted to match the body.

Unfortunately, the other pair was beyond repair. Some parts used in this deck were also salvaged from its partner to keep at least one deck working.

Here's a pair I just finished. One is for a friend while the other one is mine to keep. Both of the decks' main diecast frame, tonearm sections, pitch knobs, and platters are finished in polyurethane automotive paint topped with super glossy clear coat. I especially had the green color mixed as close to verde ithaca, a Lamborghini signature color. The only difference between the two is the pitch decal ornament. Silver with black markings and black with gold markings. Storbe LEDs have been replaced with super bright white. 33/45 & pitch indicator LEDs are fitted with green and pop up lamps are converted to LEDs super white. RCA cables and connectors replaced and ground wire modified. Tonearms rebuilt and calibrated to factory setting. Switch assembly and main board cleaned. Spindle lubricated as well as pivot bearings of the tonearms. One of the turntable's broken tonearm pivot housing was also replaced due to a crack seen in one of the pictures.

Lastly, I installed an under-platter halo on one unit.

Before refurbishment pics are also posted.

Some recent projects

Main diecast frames, tonearm sections and platters are repainted in glossy metallic orange using polyurethane automotive paint. Decks came without pop-up lamps so I provided a pair and converted to LED in super bright white. Strobe, 33/45 are also replaced with super bright white LEDs while pitch indicator LEDs were replaced with red. Installed new aluminum pitch decal ornament (silver). Tonearms rebulit and calibrated to factory setting. Lubricated pivot bearings of the tonerarms and spindle. Provided original pitch knobs because one was missing while the other was not original. Replaced RCA cable and connectors with internal ground modification. Pitch controls cleaned and calibrated. Installed new tonearms clip rests. Rubber base also repainted.

Hey Nicadraus, first off let me just say that your work has been a massive inspiration for the refurb/mod project I'm undertaking at the minute. You've got some great ideas - top work.

Repainted the rubber base

I was just wondering if you've ever had any issues with the paint flaking off/ ckacking when being used on a flexible rubber surface? Is it a special type of paint that you use and did you go for a matte or gloss finish? Thanks

You can use vinyl paint for the rubber base. But acrylic/polyurethane can also be used as long as you don't use primer on the rubber. Just wet sand the surface of the rubber using 1200c grit sand paper, dry it well, then you can start spraying it. You can make 3 to 4 coats.

What a great thread, nice one. Perhaps it might inspire me to finally fix the target lights on mine.

I did calibrate my decks once, so I've at least had the back off them. But I did shit myself a bit in the process .

Late post - for May 2015

Clean and Simple 3

Both of the units' main diecast frame and tonearm sections are finished in 1200 MK2 original silver shade. Tonearm bridges have been replaced on both units because the pivot screws have corroded badly and stuck. So the bridges had to be cut with dremmel just to take out the arms. Strobe, 33/45 and pitch indicator LEDs were replaced with super bright white as well as converted Pop-up lamps. RCA cables and connectors replaced with internal grounding and tonearms rebuilt and calibrated to factory setting. The rubber base, tonearm mount plate were also repainted to flat black. Pitch controls calibrated and applied with new aluminum pitch decal ornaments. Platter refaced (3-step) and repainted, Pitch control knobs repainted because the original color have faded already. Switch assembly (Switch, start/stop, 33/45 buttons) and PCBs cleaned. Pivot bearings and motor spindle lubricated.

I think I really have to take apart my Reloops now and re-paint them and pimp them up. How hard can it be ayways? I disassemble only one at a time of course, label up every screw and part and take lots of photos and use common sense and caution. I don't know if you've ever worked with a Reloop before (4000 mk2) and what kind of tools do I need to open it up and such. Also, I need to replace the target light with an LED but I don't know the power specs and these things aren't build like Technics. Any help would really be appreciated.
You're an inspiration to us DIY'ers. :)

I've never worked on a Reloop, but they're all much of a muchness. A set of various screwdrivers will do almost everything. Make sure you're using the correct shape and size of driver though otherwise you'll round the screwheads out. It's amazing how many people don't know the difference between a phillips and a pozi....

Also, I need to replace the target light with an LED but I don't know the power specs and these things aren't build like Technics.

Again, I can't help with the specifics of taking it apart. The power specs are simple to work out though. First of all you need to measure the DC voltage across the existing lightbulb. Then you need to select an LED of the size and colour of your choosing, and let us know its specs. If the specs aren't provided with the LED, then don't buy it! The relevant specs are Forward Voltage (Vf) and Foward Current (If).

Thanks. I don't have decent screwdrivers (I have to open up my old phone as well) so that will need to be bought.
I know a bit of electronics and stuff but I need to get a multimeter.

BTW a lot of people don't know the difference between a phillips and a JIS (japanese industrial standard) and it has stripped down many screws on japanese lenses and cameras.

BTW a lot of people don't know the difference between a phillips and a JIS (japanese industrial standard) and it has stripped down many screws on japanese lenses and cameras. That's why it's better to not even buy Phillips screw drivers. JIS screwdrivers will work perfectly well with both JIS screws and Phillips screws, but a Philips screwdriver will only be of optimum use on a Phillips screw & will likely damage a JIS screw.

Fire Red 1200s - July 2015

This is actually the first pair of 1200s that I painted in fire red which is very close to Ferrari's signature color. Usual Works1200 finished with automotive polyurethane paint on the main diecast frame, tonearms sections and platter. All LEDs replaced with new red ones except for the converted pop-up lamps which were fitted with super bright white. New silver aluminum pitch decals applied, tonearms calibrated as well as pitch controls. RCA cables and connectors replaced. Motor spindle lubricated and tonearm pivot bearing as well.

Great work Nicadraus. I want to ask a question if you don't mind. I recently picked up a pair of 1210's with the European 2 prong plug. Is it typically difficult to replace the power cord with a U.S. Model? The unit has a plug adapter, but I would rather change the cord.

It's actually very easy. Get some plugs at a local hardware/home depot shop. Cut the existing ones and strip the wires at the right length (about an inch). Twist them tightly. Then open the new plugs and screw the two wires there. Just make sure that both wires are not touching each other before sealing the plug with the provided screw and nut at the center.

Ok, I see. If I were ever want to change the cord with a OEM Technics replacement part, the cord has to be soldered inside the unit. Is that a pretty straight forward task in your opinion. Maybe I should just send my decks to you, and let you add a blue pop up light while your in there :) included is a picture of my pristine 1210 mk5. As you can see, I only had room for on of these on my dresser lol.

It would be an easy job if you know how to solder. Just follow the cord where it ends on the power supply PCB. Then you can solder a new cord in the same exact spot where you removed the old one. There are no polarities on that so you can solder the wires on either places/spots. I would gladly accept the job but since I'm from Manila, it would cost you a lot for shipping.

Anyway, it would be nice to add another deck and improvise a laptop stand or table on the sides. :)

By the way, that MK5 looks so fresh. Just put the counter weight, headshell/cart/needle and you good to go.

Nice and clean, the way it should be. :)
I won't be taking apart my Reloops because I don't have any videos of people taking them apart so I don't wanna risk anything. They are in perfectly working order, why ruin that? ;)

Your work looks great. I had a question about how you refinish the platters. I did my first pair of platters last weeka and they came out ok. I was wondering what grade of sandpaper are you using once you apply the paint. When I did mine I started out with 100 grit and moved up to 220 and then wet sanded with 800 grit. I thought going up in grit would bring out the shine for the dots and top and lower strip of aluminum on the platter but it didn't. The aluminum seemed to shine best when I started with the 100 grit. Even after trying polishes like Brasso and Bar Keepers friend I wasn't able to get a super shine to them. Do you have any recommendations for a nice shine?

Also I noticed on one of your pictures you had completely stripped the platter of all paint. What did you use to do that? Especially the parts in between the dots...

I posted the procedure in this thread. 100 grit is way too abrasive. Use 400, 800, 1200 then 2000 to get that shine and smoothness.

Hello from England!
I have just purchased a pair of sl1210s which are in need of a refurb. Having never done a set before I have a few questions, firstly, about powdercoating, or should i say the acid bath process. has anyone had this done? or would it eat through the aluminium?
Gold plating? you can buy kits on ebay but are they any good?
