Saw it on Kotaku.com. Thought it'd be worth mentioning.

Thanks for the heads-up.

edit: Also free on iPhone/iPod touch. I'm not sure if it's a universal app or not.

I don't even have an iPhone or an iPad and I downloaded both :D

I might get an iPad sooner or later, so I figure I'd get it while the getting is good.

Its an awesome app for playing around on the couch ... Don't think I would ever take it to a gig but for backup gear in a pinch it could prove invaluable. Wonder if them offering it up for free is to promote the kontrol Z1???

Yeah, I think they made it free because it is supposed to work with the Z1, so I guess they are pushing it. I wouldn't gig with it either, but I went over to the Native Instrument forums and there are some people hooking it up to a NI soundcard and using it to gig with. I mainly play with it on the couch like you said. it's a great little app, assuming your music is beatgridded correctly.

I dunno. Personally, I can't see NI giving it away for a $200 piece of equipment. I really think that the new 's4' is going to be Traktor DJ compatible as well as Traktor Pro compatible and that's why they're getting it out there. Once new customers have the free software and are used to it, they'll need something to control it pushing up sales of the new controller, right?

I downloaded it but I don't really like it compared to my djay for iPad. I do have the Numark iDJ Pro controller for it though. Might be different when a controller for Traktor DJ comes out.

EDIT: There's this post BTW - http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?21893-Traktor-DJ-iOS-app&p=278428&viewfull=1#post278428

I'm interested in a Z1, but I don't see myself using just an iPad to DJ. Not enough space for music in the one I have. I'd love to lighten my load, though. An iPad and Z1 sure beats lugging around a mixer plus two turntables in road ready cases.

No, it's a separate app for each platform, but both are free, so grab them whilst you can.
