View Full Version : Deconstructing MIDI controller (Akai LPD8)?

Many of you may also own this controller and have probably discovered that while it is more solid that other comparable laptop controllers, it is not without its own problems.

Problem #1: Rotary pot knobs are too small and hard to grip
Problem #2: The pads themselves do not give any discernible "feedback" when pressed (other than the LEDs). I would prefer a positive response for every button press.

Solution: Replace pots knobs with something better. Use arcade style buttons in place of the stock pads.

I cracked it open, and noticed that between the pads themselves, there is a conductive sheet which makes contact.

A closer look reveals the two leads that become a closed circuit once a pad is pressed:

Am I right in thinking that if I were to close that path and work in my own normally open switch (ie. arcade button), the result would be the same? This is coming from a purely mechanical perspective.
