It goes into why its stupid for club owner to demand that people playing at their venues for little money also bring their own crowd.

Unfortunately, with the ease of being able to get into DJing by way of digital mediums. There are a LOT of would be DJs out there. All of them want the fame. They are willing to play for free and bring all their friends. A college kid that knows a 100 people that likes to party and will play for free will always get the gig. Period. That is the fact of life right now for DJs. There is no changing that.
So I gave up on playing clubs in the city and for promoters. That where the supply of DJs are and the demand is very low. Demand equates to pay. I now DJ in the suburbs. Sure its crappy Top40. But ya know what, I get paid well. Car payment type payment per night, and I lease a nice Audi A4. I play out 4-6nights a month. You do the math. I am not expected to promote although it is very appreciated when I do.
Club owners in the suburb (at least here) are not too concerned about bodies in the club, but rather concern themselves on how much an average person spends. If the club make $10k on a Sat and only 100 people, it is better that $10k with 300 people. Reason why, they don't have to pay staff and does not have to keep that much inventory. Profit is higher. Quality VS Qty. So a crowd spending an average of $100 per person(it averages that way when you have a lot of bottle service) is better than $30 per person (people just buying a drink or two and paying cover).
Clubs in the city are concerned about the crowd. Packing in the crowd, even each person there only buys 2 beers. Its no wonder, most closes in a matter of a couple of years.

great article :)
Really great article. Amazing how accurate it is too. I love how the writer flipped the situation around by using an example of the wine seller.

Yep this is absolutely bang on, i've seen quite a few venues close through doing this, it rarely works well...

Loved it enough to share it with all of my muscian friends and bar owning friends... thankfully asking us to bring the crowd isn't so prevalent in this area.
