Looks awesome! Get some faster scenes for the scanners and you're golden! Very nice rig you have there.

Thanks!! Yeah I just scratched the surface for programming. Have to take some more time and do more scenes :)

Nice job on the programming! Look pretty sweet in the dark. Although your light truss also looks a bit over crowded, lol.

yea I would get rid of that thing (i wouldn't call it truss) ASAP. 6 light stands would look better and offer more versatility. also you can spread your lights wiiiiiiddddeee! very nice lights though. I'm jealous.

True. This is leftover old ass leave in the basement truss.

;)

I have the option of 10' 14' 16' or 20' truss, depending on the combinations I use. It's the old how much are they going to pay vs how much am I going to bring. This is for a school dance. I'll probably use the 14' truss and spread things out a bit. I'm not getting a whole lot for the dance, $400, from 6pm - 10:30. Not bad. I'll push for $500 next time. They don't have any idea what they are in for. The last 2 DJ's had nothing for lights so it should work out well.

I'll leave the big guns at home, my Minimacs. More throw, buy usually saved for the bigger gigs. This is something put together that won't be too big of a deal to put up & take down. I have a trunk that I'm setting up with the intimidators, mini Kintas and the JellyDomes all together. Then it can sit in the garage ready to go when needed.

;)

This is a band setup, obviously.

Excellent choices, but you need a truss about twice as big as in the first pic. Other than that, nice setup!

That is not truss, it is tower. Tower is rated for a vertical load, not horizontal as there is no diagonal bracing. I strongly suggest NOT USING IT!

That picture never loaded for me but the video did so I didn't catch this. That looks like an antenna tower and that is actually dangerous.

No kidding hey. I've been using this truss since around 92. And I also see it everywhere in clubs etc.

But just because its everywhere doesn't mean it's right. I actually looked at some new truss a couple months ago. They had both styles at the store I shop at, I ended up taking a pass, but now that you mention it, it's a good idea to use the proper tools for the job. I have a big dollar gig on the 30th, (no lights involved) and that will fund some new truss. I like the aluminum triangle stuff I looked at so I'll pick up a couple 8' lengths.

The truss in your video looks like it's bowing. Steel bends, whereas aluminum bends slightly and then snaps correct bill?

robare99
06-03-2013, 01:25 PM
Hmmmm I looked at, and it doesn't seem to be bowing. It might just be the iPhone lens I took the pic with. This piece is an extra oddball 10' galvanized length that stays in the basement for programming. I don't have a pic of the other truss, which is steel as well, but more like the random pics above.

Couple quick videos of the setup in action. I'll be picking up some new truss in either the 21st or the 28th. This stuff has worked since 1995 with no issues, so I chanced this one last gig with it. But I agree it's best to use the proper tools for the job, so that will be my next upgrade.

I heard the last DJ didn't have any lights at all, so hopefully they noticed the difference.

:)

I'm happy to mention I'll be upgrading my truss this weekend, to aluminum triangle proper.

robare99

Still upgrading this Friday. After looking at the load specs for the aluminum triangle vs aluminum box truss, the difference between the two makes the decision a no brainer. I'll be picking up two 8'2" lengths of the box truss, 4 spigots and a dozen bigger clamps.

That's the kicker, moving from clamps that are $6 each to clamps that are $20 each. I'll probably pick up a 3'3" section later to give me some more options. This weekends gigs will be remembered as the "light truss gigs"

lol

Ouch.

Buy once cry once.

Standard O-Clamps are $8 a piece, distributed as the same product through many brands (Chauvet/ADJ/Blizzard/Elation) but the big boy clamps that I'm converting my movers to, the Global ones, are a bit pricy.

These are cheaper o-clamps.

Basically I'm in the middle of nowhere, where I am I have to take what I can get.

Tomorrow.

I can order more online later but yeah. I have to take what I can get tomorrow.

I can get more from them or eBay, but not for tomorrow.

Misread the specs and found out the triangle truss would work so I picked up two 8' lengths. I'll pick up a 3 footer this weekend along with some more clamps, and some other goodies.

Did you replace the Intimidators with what looks to be Mini Macs?

Good eye, those are minimacs. I do sound for bands as well. The minimacs are for bands, and for my deluxe light setup. I actually have 8 of them. A little old school, but still great fixtures. No prisms or autofocus, but I do really like them!

Typical band setup: (old truss)

http://youtu.be/s4PmMbfBEC0
http://youtu.be/lxY54SLrqtY

I have a wedding on the 20th that will include the minimacs, looking forward to it! I had the intimidators and Pinspot 360's. then when I added the 3NX's the intimidators were a bit washed out. So I picked up the minimacs. When I moved into DJ'ing I picked up a pair of mini Kintas and a pair of Jellydomes to round things out. Now I'm working on getting a set if 4 intimidator spot duos to replace the Pinspot 360's.

Then I think I'll be done.

Famous last words.

How much did all that you have cost?

How much did all that you have cost?

How much did all that you have cost?

On the truss:

12 - 3NX = $2750
4 - Minimac Profiles = $2200
2 - Stands = $600
2 - 8' truss = $400
---------------------------
$5,950

So, around $6,000 for everything there, not counting the 2 Fab5's I use to light the band.

My total light inventory, including the lights at the school dance etc:

Lights

12 - 3NX = $3000
8 - Fab5's = $2000
8 - Minimac Profiles = $4400
12 - Microh Slim P7 Tri= $1200
2 - Spot Duos = $900
4 - Intimidator 1.0 = $500
2 - Jellydomes = $360
2 - Mini Kintas = 240
2 - Stands = $600
2 - 8' truss = $400
---------------------------
$13,600

I picked up the Microh's and increased my Fab5 count to 8, so I could use the Fab5's on the truss for DJ'ing a wedding, which would give me 2 dozen other lights for uplighting. These prices are pretty much ballpark, I didn't go back and look them all up. That's with shipping.
