You'll get there too one day Kullz, it takes time to get the sort of gear we've got, now imagine what it's like sitting in the booth playing around with 12 Roboscan 518's :)

First I'm going to take some DMX ligthing classes, Which he will teach.

Me too, wish I could tag along, you've got a really impressive rig james (all top quality gear) and it'd be great to see it running in person, the likelyhood of that though is pretty slim considering I live in the UK

With all the money put into that setup... for heavens sake, get a front board!!! (basically the facade that goes in the front to hide unsightly wires)

Nice system man.

But question. You just use a Laptop? :uhoh:

I ask this because your booth or table for that matter look's small?

And about the wire's showing, Man be easy on him, I can't even hide all my wire's.. The wire does have to get to the speaker's and to the outlet's.... Sometime's you can help it... I have big heep's of wire at the end's of my truss and under the booth.

Where you out of man? Nice rig. :)

Designer
10-13-04, 01:16 PM
Yeah, I'll second that, with my mobile rig I never get time to hide all my wiring, plus you gotta keep DMX cables separate from power cables anyway to help reduce irratic fixture behaviour from interference.

Big heaps of unsightly wires in clear view of your audience are not proffesional, and if you intend on making money, its a good idea to get a frontboard and tape down your wires that you cannot hide with the front board. A front board costs 150 bucks... or you can invest a little more in getting one custom made. At a school dance I am sure it doesnt matter much, but if you want to step it up to bigger paying events such as weddings, barmitzvahs and coorperate events, then you have to present yourself a little more proffesioanally. Just my advice fellas!

DJNaviss
10-14-04, 12:02 PM
Sal, In what way did I say anything on how I go about placing my wire's at the event's I do.

In most cases, At a school dance, I'm on a stage, In which so was lajolladjs. Also this will mean kid's wont be able to get onto the stage.

I've also done school dances, Where a stage isn't a choice, And in having big system's, It does tend to get hard hiding lot's of wire.

I have well over 800 feet of wire, And finding good hiding place's, Isn't easy. However I do put most of them into big boxes, In and around the DJ Booth under table's.
But there's alway's going to be the power cord(s) going to any outlet your able to find, And then that of the speaker wire.
I do tape down my wire. And cord's. And also I do hide as many wire's as I'm able to.

Now, As about stepping up? I've done my fair share of wedding's, In which I've never been told I was bad, Or in any cases told I need to hide my wire's better.
Nor have had a case where one has fell over or tripped on my wire.

DJNaviss
10-14-04, 12:04 PM
And also to add... When the party start's,. Odd's are nobody will even see wire's, That could be hanging around the truss.
All that really matter's is how safe the wire's are. In term's of being taped or under a mat on the ground.

Designer
10-14-04, 12:04 PM
Big heaps of wire - yes, unprofessional
Some visible wiring - Nothing wrong with that

I know what you mean Naviss, you cant hide them all, and hell, the gears only set up for a short period, but nine times out of ten, no-one will notice anyway.

As for trussing, it's virtually impossible to hide you cable in trussing, at the club we have galvaised steel cable trunking installed alongside the truss but obviously there's the advantage we don't have to take lighting down at the end of the night. :P

People don't judge your professionalism as a DJ by whether you've got neat and tidy wiring (that's how you judge a good electrician), you get judged by how much people enjoy the entertainment you provide for them.

Dont take offense fellas, I took a look at Designer's setup which is nice, but noticed that he didnt have a frontboard. That is like wearing a black Armani suit, with italian shoes and wearing white gym socks.

Naviss, its a matter of personal tastes... I would rather have my lighting rig neatly setup and wireing taped to the truss. If you have the attention to detail to setup everything in DMX mode rather then stand alone/sound activated mode (99% of the people probably dont even notice the difference) then you should have enough attention to detail to tape your wires too. But once again its a matter of personal tastes, the only people who will scrutinze you would be other Mobile DJs... (like me :) )

oops sorry, that was lajolladjs setup I commented on, not designers.

Hey, that's OK, (not sure where you saw my rig, I hav'nt posted any photo's yet) ah, we were posting at the same time :)

I do agree that a front board is a good guise to hide wiring, but your right, it's only another DJ that'd notice really, most people can't even see the rig if you've got bright enough lighting. I think in James' case it'd be hard to hide that amount of wiring though.

DJNaviss
10-14-04, 12:44 PM
Well Sal... All I can say is..
I'm sorry my rig, Or most other Pro Mobile DJ's on this forum, Don't stand up to your "none showing wire's" setup.

Oddly enough, I've done alot of mobile work with other Mobile DJ's, Two of which have their DJ's placed in many different state's.
I've worked with them personally to help them at gig's, And these Pro's, Set up just the same as I.

I do use all DMX light's, However I do not program them, And your right... Nobody would really care nor see anything change.

Taste? Yes... I think your right... Though I believe your about the only one to have this taste. Or at least anyone I know of.
I bet if we done a gig together, And you had all your wire's all hidden, Nice and neat, And I had a few wire's left out on the dance floor and it looked alittle messed up...
And you wasn't playing the music that not only the client asked for, But also that of the guest's, And it was to loud or something anything.
And I on the other hand work with that of the client and the guest's, To enshure they all have a great time, I bet my gig, The people would be to busy dancing and having fun to worry about any old wire, And in most cases, They didn't see due to the light's being out.

As for you, You'd be to busy worrying as to if a wire would fall out of hidding place, That you wouldn't worry as to how the client was feeling or if they was even having fun.

Also, If you haven't see my rig, It's very big, And with the size and the small amount of help I have. I can only do so much in so little time. And hidding every wire to where nobody can see it. That's just a waste of my time. When nobody even care's. They hire a DJ, Not a electrician, To hide all the wire's. People want to have fun.

So, Please EDUCATE us as to how we should put our setup's. I'd love to see your awesome job on hidding all these wire's with some of your system's photo's.

Oh Naviss, I didnt mean to turn this into a pissing contest... "my system can beat up your system" and what not... I was just offering some insight and some suggestions for you to take or to not take... thats what forums are for right? Rest assured my system is ideal for my purpose and has made me decent money in the past few years... and if people werent dancing at my parties.... would I be booked every weekend (like I am) from just word of mouth?

DJNaviss
10-14-04, 01:11 PM
Sal... I believe we got off on the wrong foot here. I understand where your coming from. And what you mean.

However let's look at Jame's rig.. In his last event he had over 3,200 Feet's of wire.
How the heck can you hide all that wire. There's no way.

I'm happy for you, As to be able to be booked every week.

And I didn't mean to get into a pissing contest as you so put it.

One can only hide so many wire's.. And with big system's, It's very hard.

I think we probably all read too deeply into what each other posted earlier, anyway (changing the subject), what light's re you running Sal?

DJSAL
10-15-04, 10:31 AM
yeah man I hear ya....

I run the ADJ Tron series (one roller, one Scan), a ADJ minigressor, a Martin Ego 2, 2 ADJ rollerpods (good for slow dances) and a ADJ star ball which goes right on the floor in front of my setup... and I also have a rack mounted ADJ lighting console and a basic 10 foot truss, but 9 times out of 10, I setup the T shape truss with 5 foot instead of 10.... if you havent noticed... I appreciate American DJs ability to make good cheap lights.

10-17-04, 02:02 PM
Wow I just read all of the above... Can't we all just get along :)
j/k good points from all parties, My view is, if they see some wires it is ok, they need to be neat and orderly when they are where they can be seen. But if they can't see them, than it is fair game. I state it like that because when it takes 5-6 hours to set it all up and you come down to the last 30 minutes before doors open, you take care of the most important thing: Sound & Lighting
1. No sound=No party=No Fun=Mad People
2. No lighting=Less fun=Vary Dark=Mad People

I think it's funny how it alway's take's so long to set up lighting and not even 1/4 the time to do sound.
I hate having to set up lighting.
How big of a crew do you have? To set everything up?

http://www.djnaviss.com/naviss.gif

DJ-Nigey-C
02-03-05, 06:07 PM
between 2 or 3 people to set it all up....

but we have been doing this for around 6years now...

we using nothing but DMX-able equipment

apart from the parcans we use, but then the Dimmer Racks (12channel, 32A 3phase) we use are linked up to the controllers by DMX.

The reason it takes so long to wire the lighting is because u have to put in 2 or 3 wires per light (power, DMX in, DMX out) where as sound, its straight forward. The way i wire my speakers up is i use an 4pole wire, taking the bass and top (2 for bass, 2for top) into the bass cab, then a 2pole wire out the bass cab into the tops...

also the good thing about the crew is we are ALL DJs so that helps when setting the DJ box/booth/table up... and we ALL do mobile discos and work in clubs, so if anything buggers up in a club we are in, we can sort it out as we have the knowledge from doing it on the road with the discos...

Designer

Just read u were running your equipment on three-phase

3 Phase is horrible to work with, moreso on permanent installations, trying to balance equipment across phases to help reduce peak demand rating is always a pain (club owners always wanna save money). Any of you guys done any permanent installation work?

Lol, I got a job coming up soon but it's gonna entail running a decent size steel wire armour cable to bring power into a new power room capable of handling about 160A and it's gonna be like trying to bend an inch thick metal bar every time i have to bend it (anyone want a backache LMAO)

A note to anyone who is working with 3 phase - Be extrememly careful when working with 3 phase, your body makes an excellent conductor and often the currents involved are a lot higher than those encountered in domestic type installations. Getting a phase-to-phase shock will easily cause extreme pain and due to the higher current's involved your more likely to get stuck on to a conductor rather than thrown off it, believe me I didnt enjoy my hospital stay which was thankfully only overnight for observation.
