1) Beats are not as good as you think they are. TRUST ME.

My top headphones:
1) V-MODA Crossfade LP's. I LOVE THEM. I have 2 pairs. Lol.
2) Denon DN-HP1000: Just as Good as the V-moda's only that they have deeper base.
3) Sennhesier HD-251 II: O personally don't like them since the sound is very flat and lack bass for me
4) Pioneer HDJ-2000: Very Decent pair, well built, but too expensive.
5) V-moda Crossfade LP's.

Why is the detachable cord a concern? If anything it's a plus, because if something ever happens to it you can just replace it without having to get a new pair of headphones.

It's just another thing to 'be careful with' but good point :) I've just bought them, as my old one's have fallen apart & now I'm getting interference sounds from the cable.

I'd have to say the Sennheiser HD25s

Reason being, I've used a bunch of the over-the-ear style headphones in the past (HDJ-1000, 2000, Xone 53, Technics) and once you make the switch to on-the-ear you'll never go back! It's somewhat weird getting used to at first but the lightness of them gives more comfort over extended use.

I've also used the TMA-1s which have a similar design but I found that the headband fits a little too snug for my head, and they aren't as posable as the HD25s.

That's just my two cents!

im telling you guys, the Audio Technica ATH-M50's are where its at. head-fi (the biggest and most respected headphone forum on the web) places it at its number one recommended pair of headphones EVER! its amazing and only 150$! but go for the coiled cable, as the straight cable is about 15' long or more. and its a huge pain in the ass

My top 3 would be:
1.SHURE SRH-840. I have the 240s, and the 840 seems like the next step and the best in its class by brand. Good sound, light, and pretty tough. Isolation isn't bad on the 240s, but the 840s trump that figure decently. Has the screw-on 1/4" adapter... Since you tend to lose the non threaded ones quite easily at the end of the night.

2. Sony MRDV700. Only listed since it's an industry standard headphone. Good isolation, decent flat sound, and coiled cord with screw-on adapter is a plus.

3. Sennheiser HD25. Listed since it's another fave. Good sound, good isolation, light on the head and doesn't clamp your ears like the Sony MDRV700s do. Yet another with the screw on 1/4" adapter - notice a trend here???

i'm very loyal to my Sony MDR 7506's. they have a flat response, so what you hear is what you get. this makes them good for studio work as well as dj'ing, and they're cheaper (and more durable) than a lot of the cans marketed to dj's. mine are 15 years old and still going strong.

that said, most people disregard this advice and buy cheap plastic "dj" headphones with pumped up bass

...the Audio Technica ATH-M50's...

I'll give these a vote too, though I don't have much to compare them to I think they are top quality, had mine just over 2 years and couldn't be happier. And these are good too if your ears hurt when they are pinned back, the cups are reasonable on these, I find them very comfortable.

the next headphone i will buy is the Zomo HD-1200. I was checking the headphone at my dj dealer lately, and its really good. I didn t know the brand yet, i just read a big review (12 headphones check) from the "Beat" Magazine. And the Zomo one won, so i decided to give it a listen :-) and the headphone sounds great no doubt, bass with pressure, nice highs but no to much and good sound at the snare frequency, i think its the middle ;-) The headphone felt comfortable too. I still using the MDR V700 from Sony, but i am not happy with it, the plastic on my right earpad broke a little bit. But i can t replace it :-(

1. Sennheiser HD 25-II (excellent sound output, small, compact, undisctructable!, lack off bass)
2. Beats Studio (Excellent bass, very loud and keep quality good for live performance and to much background noise, unhandy, big, batteries)
3. Sennheiser HD-205/206 (my oldest pair: Excellent sound, covers your ears well, handy ear flip, breaks fast, to quiet)
4. Boss (worst headsets even worn)
5. Sony (In overal good models, but not my favorites, they all lack something I want)

Iv seen many people say Beats pro suck. Beats Pro indeed suck but the Studio are just... crazy!
I love it as the sound quality is ALMOST as the 25II HD, what is good too is that when you DJ and the stage's music is really loud, the Studio get powerfully loud in sound making it better to hear, but not better for your ears xD

Sennheiser HD25-1 II or Dennon AH-D2000, just depends what I brought along

I'm curious to try some of the Shure in-ear buds for on the go, something along the lines of 42dB of external reduction

What do you guys buy your headphones on other than comfort? Personally i go for the flattest response I can find....

These are my favourites. I don't use them for mixing, as they are a bit too light & swivel too much to monitor "on the ear".

Seriously nice headphones. No plastic. Closed back. All real leather, aluminium & steel. The sound is better than my HDJ2000s.

... but, they do cost!

Since I'm still learning beatmatching (mainly because I haven't had the time to devote lately) and I'm a mobile DJ, not club, I'm wondering for those who do work clubs and do loud parties/school type events, do you prefer the bass heavy headphones because it's easier to hear the bass beat over the live feed with enhanced bass in your cans?

Also, related, I see people talking about wearing earplugs and headphones at the same time. Does this make it easier or harder to beatmatch. I have a pair of cheap hearos right now but eventually plan on getting the custom ER's that require a visit to an audiologist.

Phil Noize
05-10-2012, 08:26 AM
I prefer a relatively flat response from my phones. If you go too bass heavy, it can make it tricky to pick out detail. A good quality pair of phones with decent isolation, that can handle high volumes is what I would recommend. I personally use Pioneer HDJ2000s, but there plenty of alternatives at a more reasonable price. Sennheiser HD-25s seem to be a favourite with DJs.

This is a good thread to check out ...

1. Beyerdynamic DT1350 - Bass as clear and crisp as open backs
2. Sennheiser HD25-1 - Light weight and indestructible
3. Alan and heath XD-53 - Great sound and nice swivel hinges that don't tend to crack
4. Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro with synthetic leather pads - Studio quality and big sound stage for a good price
5. Fostex T50RP - Because with a few mods they make amazing quality headphones

HDJ 2000, leather ear pads and cusion very comfortable, sound impressive, looks great.($245.00)

A&H DB XD53, The best looking, and a plus sound over the 2000's, these are a bit heavy, yet not bulky.(199.99)

A&H XD 40, my play around heads, I take these EVERYWHERE!($79.99)

Pioneer SEDJ 5000 for me.

http://www.workingdj.com/wp-content/uploads/Pioneer%20SE-DJ5000.jpg

These are my 2nd pair. The reason why they are my 2nd pair is because someone stole em from me in the late 90s/early 2000s. I had the HDJ 1ks for a bit, but they eventually broke.
