I've got an idea to do this... but was wondering if it's been attempted before.

Disclaimer... I'm an engineer, so I'm aware of the risks.

The idea is to cut a slit into a blank rack section, just big enough to slide the single member base vertically down into the top of a slant rack console.

First... I'm looking for a link to a heavier gauge blank 19" section that can take the load. Keeping in mind that with a computer on the stand it will have a hefty torque.

Second... Thinking of using angle iron or brackets mounted to the underside of the blank section to transfer the twisting force back to the plate.

Feedback?

I would modify a second tier keyboard stand and have it mount the way you want. The arms are already designed for much heavier loads and they lock via intermeshing teeth.

A thought:

Instead of a blank panel, maybe you could use a rack shelf? They come in several different sizes (I've seen 1U-4U, other sizes may exist), they're rated for 50lbs or so, and they're already braced to handle a load in the proper direction. All you'd need to do is drill a few holes, then bolt on a plate (or several individual bars) spaced off the shelf with washers to allow your crane stand to slide in.

That's a great idea Penguin!

Agree that's a great idea...

Also started thinking about using a chassis box and using the box to drill though and clamp to...

Such as this... http://www.redco.com/Redco-MF1-6.html

Do you think these things are strong enough?

How about mounting a pair of small hinged clamps directly onto the top of the rack? You would swing the Crane's single member base all the way back then apply the clamps to the bottom bracket of the Crane.

Something like these, but with a lower profile:
