I have been A ballroom instructor for several years now, I want to become a dj so that I can get out to ballroom events and weddings as I should be able to incorporate ballroom lessons with wedding parties. My first questions, do you think that this is something people would be interested in (a quick ballroom lesson during the wedding for the guests). and what kinda setup do you recommend. I currently have a Hercules rmx midi mixer and a laptop full of ballroom/dance style music. What else would you recommend as far as speakers and the works. I want to get out there and do this, I know how to dj ballroom music as I have been doing it for years while teaching. but I don't know what I need. I think the midi mixer would work good with the music I have but I don't know where I need to go from there. any help would be great... Thanks!

I have a lot of friends that do the ballroom thing, I djed a wedding for one the other night. I thought for sure i wouldn't have what they wanted. I had some stuff they could dance too. But most of the music was traditional wedding music. I must say you can't play a lot of ballroom music to most crowds. I think this would be a hard thing to sell but if you did, and you only do that niche then you should do well with it. However if you sell to people that you are a normal dj they will be sadly disappointed by the show they receive.

I got my start DJing at dance studio parties...and continue to this day. I do teach wedding couples to dance, and I offer quick dance lessons at weddings and corporate parties. During a wedding reception, I have several line dances that I teach (I live in TX), a 5 minute salsa explosion lesson (zero to dancing salsa in 5 minutes), and several others. One or two lessons during a wedding reception is more than enough. These lessons are NOT like anything you will do at a studio. If there are not dancing to a song at the end of 5 minutes and loving it...you're doing it wrong.
I also provide PA and DJ for some very large dance competitions. The largest is in a 25,000 sqft ballroom with about 1500 people packed in there, and about 8000sqft of dance floor. I take eight tops and eight subs for that event. At a dance competition, I can clear in 4-5 days of work over a weekend what I can make at a 4 hour wedding reception. So...the motivation needs to come from somewhere other than the wallet.
Playing for music for dancers is very different than playing music for the general public.
How large are the weddings you are targeting?
How large are the ballroom events that you are targeting?

What?
Professional dance events do not pay well.
