View Full Version : Custom Adapters for mounting moving heads to tripods

Until i upgrade my vehicle, space is at a premium, that being said i don't have room for 2 sections of box truss to mount my moving heads to.
My solution was to fabricate some aluminum adapters to be able to securely mount the heads to a couple of speaker poles.

I know that you can use a 5 dollar purchased part and a piece of wood to achieve the same effect but i like working with metal !!

I made the 2 piece constructions yesterday

The round sleeve fits into a precision pocket in the base plate and is secored by (4) 1/4-20 screws
The moving head will mount to the base plate using 2 m10 bolts

I just sent the parts out to be black anodized. When they come back i will put everything together and add a few more pictures.

I assume you must have access to a CNC machine. Very nice work!

Man, I'm jealous. I love working with metal but don't have access to the proper tools so I'm always improvising.

Beautiful work!

Nice job iammongo, repped :)

You don't need a CNC machine to do good work. You can achive a lot using not much more than a vice, a hacksaw, some files and a drill.

^^^^

Yeah, but it doesn't look as pretty. I like the CNC'd swirls!

And I know all about the tools you mentioned. You do remember who I am right? Same guy who made the Remote Fader and a bunch of other DIY stuff from the old DJF (Soulo) :D

Parts came back from the plater just now and i'm really happy with how everything turned out.

Plates are a nice matte black without much gloss at all.

The plate bolts onto the 2 mounting holes for the bracket....this keeps the plate very close to the fixture which i think looks alot better.

The plate is small enough that you can still carry the fixture around by the stock handles without worrying about scraping your fingers.

adding the pole adapter is easy because of the fit pocket

Here are a couple of pictures of the light mounted.

Only thing left is to see if the light wants to twist around when turned on. I'm hoping that the cable ties to hide the wires will be enough to keep it still. If not then i will just add a tapped hole to the cup and use a threaded knob to tighten it up.

Very awesome fab job right here.. Quality seems to be very good, they look great and I am not sure if such a mount even exists currently.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I've got a few ideas to implement this year (one which will make these adapters obselete ) and will enjoy sharing them with the forum.

I have a few other projects that i'm putting time into right now. Not ony that but making things out of aluminum on a prototype basis can be pretty darned expensive, i don't think you'd like the cost

If you find the time shoot me a price and we can talk. I was thinking around $200. Im looking for something relatively simple but hard to find. Basically all I want is what you built but with bottoms too.

What was the total cost on this product? Looks great dude... how much would it cost me to pay you to make me a pair? Just curious :)

so how does it do? any wobble or rotation with the mount? I was thinking if it did rotate you could drill a hole through the pole mount and put a pin through it, like speaker stands have.

There is a very slight wobble when the speaker stand is fully extended....That puts the bottom of the fixture at about 6 and a half feet. the wobble was expected and does not in any way compromise the stability of the tripod.

After letting the fixture run in the preset "fast" mode the rotation was less than 1/4 of an inch....it still bothered me so i tapped a #10-32 hole through one side of the cup and installed a thumb screw..just a slight amount of pressure fixed the rotation completely.

Nice work. For those who have space limitations that still want the truss totem look, Trilite's V Truss is the ticket.
