What are some good names for software for a person who does small venues such as local bars and school dances? I'm looking for an option other than WMP and I'm interested in something I can use to set up a huge cue list as I go.

You need to go to the digital DJing section of this site and read up on this. There is a ton of info on there that will answer a lot of your questions.

Do these support WMA and MP3 files?MP3, of course. Traktor supports DRM-free WMA. 320kbps MP3 or a lossless codec like WAV are ideal for DJing. 256kbps AAC is also acceptable.

I can't seem to find Virtual DJ's supported codecs.

I got Virtual DJ and it works great. It's not too complicated. It does everything I need it to do. It DOES support just about everything.

If he's smart he only downloaded the 20 day trial in order to help him decide.

Virtual DJ is nice for Karaoke, and it does have video mixing capability too. I hear the vinyl control leaves a little to be desired, but if you are using MIDI control, it is rock solid. VDJ also supports the NS7 now, which is pretty nice.

For straight DJing, I'd probably go for Traktor though. >2 deck support should be standard in my opinion.

It just seemed like it had more. And the trial gave me a good idea of how easy it was to use and understand.

If you are new to DJing, Traktor can be very overwhelming. If you aren't using TCV or taking advantage of multidecks with a midi controller, it really doesnt make sense to use Traktor. VDJ has tons of features and is suuupper easy to use.

I personally use Traktor but have no issues with VDJ. Hell if it had a better timecode engine I would prob use it instead just cuz of the video integration.

The only problem I find with VDJ is it only shows the track title on wma files and not the artist. Apparently this is a known thing with it.

Well for me I went VDJ Pro instead of Traktor because Traktor does not support Karaoke, and as a mobile DJ I do a lot of Karaoke. I'd rather not do Karaoke at all, but it is a decent money maker for me when not doing regular gigs.

V-Dj can play flac if you add the codec and setup V-Dj to use the codec

And, I also went with V-DJ because of the Karaoke and video support. For what it's worth, it has been very stable for me, no crashes in the last year that I have used it. Just get a computer that is above the minimum specifications for what ever software you choose.

Look into OTsAV by OTs Labs. It is not widely used but for someone that wants a simple and extremely effective program, you should look into it. Nice thing is, even though it is simple to use it is not a light weight. To me it is perfect if you are a mobile DJ that doesn't want to deal with any club-like scratching or the like. If you are a wedding type DJ this is a great program.

I looked into a bunch of programs before settling on OTsAV. Here are the main reasons I chose OTsAV.

1. Easy to use
2. Very flexible when it comes to categorizing and sorting libraries.
3. A wonderful 'volume leveling' feature to compensate for Mp3s that might normally play back at different volumes than others.
4. Supports audio, video, and karaoke playback.
5. Priced right. $200 for audio only and $300 with video and karaoke support.
There is more but I am too lazy to type it all out.

The only real drawback that I have found with the program is because it is not as widely used as Trakktor or others there is very little online training out there on sources like Youtube.

Check it out and try the free trial at otsav.com

I am very happy I went with this program.

this may not be as popular, but i like MIXX, It's freeware, and is stupid easy to use. It does take a little set up though, and does not have many features.
But since it is free, it could get you going, till you decide want you want to buy.

If you are a beginner. I recommend Virtual DJ, because it is much easier to use than Traktor Pro.
