Hi DJF members,

Anyone can help me with that scratch? I can't seem to find it, is it Stab, Real Fast Chirps or Babys?
Ive been watching this video many times and want to practice that scratch technique.

There's 3 ways to get that sort of sound: -

1. Double-time 1 forward/2 back tears.

2. Tips. So you would do 2 very short baby scratches in a row, just catching the start of the sound.

3. Double-time chirps. I think this is what he's probably doing in the video as it looks like he's moving the fader.

Do I have to do it with the bass kick?

-I just started practicing scratching a bit and that sound is awesome. In a lots of hip hop mixtapes I heard, there were that scratch.

You can do it with any sample/sound you like. I would say that the most common method of getting that kind of sound is method 1, so if you choose that one then here's how to practice it: -

1. Take a sample that's a fairly long sound. The "ahhhhhhhh" sample that all DJs use is great.

2. Cue the sample up at the beginning. Then either let it play forward or push it forward, pull it back half way, pause briefly, then pull it back to the beginning again.

That will give you 3 sounds as you're splitting or "tearing" the reverse part of the sample in 2 by inserting the very brief pause, so you get "forward - back - back".

At first, it will sound nothing like the scratch in that video because you're doing it slowly and moving the record quite far, but the idea is to build up muscle memory so that you can do it cleanly without thinking about it, then over time, you speed up the movement and do it over a much shorter distance. When you do it fast, and using just the beginning of the sample, you get that sound that you hear hip-hop DJs do a lot when scratching.

Even if you do it one of the other ways, you'll still want to get the basic 1 forward/2 back tear down at some point.

So that scratch goes: -

fast tear - fast tear - stab - chirp - "hit it!"

Hey, no probs man. Post back and let me know how you get on with it. It can take quite a while to get down really tight, but you can practice the hand movement anywhere - on a desk or whatever when you're at school/work - to help improve muscle memory.

Mate, I have been looking around as well for a tutorial on that type of scratch, and I think I have it sorted.
Its a quick baby scratch "triplet" but starting slightly forward of the beginning of your sample and it starts scratching backwards and dropping it on the "1"

Sort of like 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 1 _ _ 234

Hard to explain but back forward back on the 234 bit really fast so its in 1 beat which gives you that d-d-d sound before letting it go on the 1.

Make sense???

Sigma got it covered but yea he's just doing pretty standard chirps at that part. Get your chirps down so you can double time them and you should be able to do that.

I have found another guy doing it and theres is your "triplet sound".
I see 1 click of the fader and some kind of 3 fast babies and some slow drag back.

In that case, I think you're doing great. My main criticism is that a lot of the scratching kinda flows in and out of beat. Try and focus more on your timing. Also, make sure you don't neglect the basics in favour of things like 2-clicks and crabs, especially as you appear to using your strong hand on the fader (although I might be wrong about that).

Good stuff though man. Keep putting the practice in and I suspect you'll be really good a couple of years down the line.

Oh yeah - when you keep stopping and reaching over, are you switching cue points for the scratch samples? I would avoid doing that if you can as it breaks things up.

Yes its my strong hand on the fader, my weak is on the vinyl and I scratch regular style.
LoL yea I stop to reach cue point since they are not in order. I used to own Novation Dicer to quick jump to sample, but I sold them so I can buy that amazing Rane Empath. =)

I think he's chirping at the very beginning of the sound, alternating double time chirp into a baby or some sort of swirl/tear. Kinda a Joe Cooley variant
