Six to ten people in a basement if you don't mind your ears bleeding because of the bad sound quality. The only saving grace is that it will break soon after you buy it, which means you don't have to listen to it any more.

The absolute cheapest loudspeaker I could recommend someone buy is the Peavey PR12. It won't sound good but it will make some noise and is fairly well built in the US.

I have a pair of these in my active speaker collection :

Convert the price to US dollars and you probably won't feel so bad about the price of a PR12. ;) And yes, that is per speaker.

If you are in LA I am sure you could score something off craigslist. Don't they have some sort of DJ union down there?

Depending on the weight, they could easily prop the doors open for coliseums seating thousands.

If you buy new, I would expect a DJ type rig that can cover up to a hundred people at a house party to cost ~$2,000. If you want to cover 250-300 people - at a school dance, for instance - then you are looking at $2,000-$10,000 to do it right. Live sound costs more - the typical sound set up for an average bar band is easily $20k. Touring productions like A list concerts and Broadway shows can have a over a million dollars worth of gear once you add up all the audio and lighting.

You can find good deals used. For instance: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/msg/3580844982.html is a great pair of loudspeakers - was probably $1200 or so new.

Peavey's PR series of speakers are decent sounding given their very low price. Great for a beginner anyway and Peavey has good customer service compared to what you wiill get from Gemini, Pyle Pro etc...

I played at a gig on the PR12's, they didn't suck.. but no bass to speak of. A starting DJ would be better off spending that $300 on a pair of better quality used speakers if he can find some.

Also, original poster prob doesn't realize that he needs to buy an amplifier to go with these. And cables. And speaker stands.

DJing costs money.

Those PR cabs are super light and have some (tubby) punch for vocals/guitars but you are right about the bass, old school home stereo monkey coffins would put out more low end.

The cheapest (powered) BBQ boxes I see recommended are:

Mackie/Tapco Thumps (I have heard these and they did not suck as bad I thought they would, popular, east to pick up used)
Behringer B215d (sold everywhere, easy to find deals on)
Samson Auro D415 (Price getting close to new EV >$300)
Alto Truesonic 15" (best reviewed of the bunch, B-stock under $300 (http://www.fullcompass.com/product/438442.html?utm_source=googleps&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=googleps))
A used B52 matrix ($500?) gets you a real subwoofer (BOOM $350 in LA (http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/ele/3585531051.html))

Street price on the new EV ZLX 12" will probably be under $350 and it could be a game changer if it has the same guts as the ELX. (Two months out).
