After a year of light use, my Sony MDR v700 headphones finally broke yesterday. I was in the middle of a mix i was recording so I had to think fast.:D
Sucks because I really did think these sounded good for mixing. These were my first Sony's and will be my last. Now I guess I need to start looking for new cans.

Man that sucks. I know your turned off by Sony but I been rockin with the 7506's and havent had any problems. The technics rpdh1200 are dope and so are the pioneer hdj 1000. Those dust covers are dope by the way.

Loving my hdj-1000's right now; however, I have seen many pictures of them broken in the exact same spot.

I know there are haters out there, but I have yet to see a pair of Beats Pro snapped like that....

The Sony MDR-V700 is known to break easily especially on the swivel hinges.

Look into Sennheiser, Ultrasone or TMA-1. Those are though headphones, sound great and prices are friendly.

I'd avoid Pioneers HDJ headphones.. My recommendations are purely Sennheiser or TMA's.

I have been using my Ultrasone DJ1 Pros for almost two years now and they haven't broken on me.

I beat the hell out of my Sonys and they lasted 10 years. The earlier year quality seems better. Once they started showing stress cracks I bought ultrasone dj1s. Have a look into those, you wont be disappointed.

I had 2 pair of the v700's break in under 6 months.

1st one, my friend dropped them and one side fell off. So I bought a second pair.
2nd one, after like 5 months of regular one of the sides started to slit open at the seams.

My Sony MDR-V6/7506 lasted me like 8 yrs, dropped, kicked, stepped on, just abused. Was disappointed with the v700

I always wondered why those 7506's lost popularity. Years before the V700 ever came out, those were the typical "DJ standard" that I always saw.

You might be loving the Pioneer's right now, but they WILL break at the cheap plastic joint. The stories you hear aren't some fluke or a bunch of guys way to rough with their gear. Those things are discontinued right now anyways thank god.

Anyone looking for tough headphones, like some others have mentioned, Ive got both the HD-25s and TMAs and they really are indestructible even for the most careless person. On the other hand, my old Pioneers broke when I was gently taking them off my head. Ive hear good things about the hdj 2000 and they do sound nice but for the money nothing beats my HD25s or even my TMAs which I consider almost as good.

have some 700s and some 500s before that, both still intact and perfect condition.

Yeah, I also owned a pair of MDR 700s for about 10 years. They never broke on me (didn't even show stress cracks). I sold them to a buddy, he didn't have them for but a few months before he snapped off one of the cups.

As much as I don't dispute the fact that there's plenty of headphones that are better AND cheaper than the beats, judging off a display is maybe the worst idea possible. Here's why. Those beats headphones are getting more publicity 100 times over any other headphones on a commercial level via commercials on TV, and unsanctioned channels via every idiot athlete/celebrity wearing them on TV. That makes the general public know them, and want to see why everyone has them. Then there is our community who doesn't understand the hype when they are twice as expensive as other cans with equal specs. We end up going to try them on just to see what all the hype is about... and lets be honest. There's a little part of us (whether you realize it or not) that does it to pad your ego and be able to say "I knew those things weren't as big as the hype made them". All of that puts them in a situation where they are going to be tried a lot more than any other headphones in the brick and mortar stores that display them, and that makes them more susceptible to wear and tear. My opinion isn't backed up through research, but you can't really disprove that logic.
All that being said, I still bet that if you put them in a controlled test environment, they would still get low performance grades as far as durability.
