As of late I've been on the hunt for some milk crates to store my records. Every time I find a possible crate, it's always too small to fit them :( Right now they're on my bookshelf with a bookend holding them straight. Definitely need something cheap for transport to gigs!
Anyways, anyone got ideas for cheap record storage? I was kind of considering the Shure MRB bag, but I don't have 50 records, so idk how well it'd hold them without leaning.

Side topic: If you have spare milk crates that fit records I'll gladly buy them from you. ;)

Not bad, only thing I'm concerned about is if I expand my collection (have 15 records on the way from Red Eye.) May just bite the bullet and grab this.

Just pisses me off that the shipping is outrageous...but I guess it's a necessary evil. I seriously thing that they started making milk crates smaller to keep people from stealing them!

Ikea used to make modular shelving storage units ideal for records that were very popular, don't suppose anyone knows what I mean or if they still make them?

When I had vinyls. I find those milk crates in parking lots lying around here and there over several years. Pick em up. That was then.

But recently I had come across these crates at Big Lots for $3 each. I had the vinyl in these before, they fit well then. But now I have the cds in them.

always away from sunlight and always in vertical position.

I use large plastic containers with sealed lids, sort of like oversized toper ware containers. I store my vinyl in those & throw in large packets of those moisture absorbers, the larger version of those packets you see in brand new shoe boxes. I then store them out of direct sunlight on metal shelving in a climate controlled room until I finally get around to transferring them into digital format.

I use those container store crates for stuff I don't want to play anymore and my Expedit (that all my stuff is on) for stuff I might want to play.

As for transporting to gigs, I used a UDG bag and a Shure bag and really liked them both. Buy the crates or expedit first and when you actually start gigging, buy a bag…they work really well. If they don't sit comfortably because you don't have enough records…that just means you need more records.

I have almost enough Container Store crates to hold all my vinyl because I moved. I find them handy for vinyl sets at home, I stack them two high and flip through records on the top crate. I also use them for sorting vinyl. My main vinyl storage is an Expedit. Right now I have a 2x4, which doesn't hold all my vinyl. I used to have a 4x4 which held all my vinyl but I had a crate stolen and sold off and traded some records. I plan on getting another 2x4 Expedit to store the rest of my vinyl and misc DJ supplies (vinyl cleaner, needles, cables, adapters, all that other bullshit that seems to hang around).

The Container Store crates I've used for years (like, 10) and they are great, indestructible, perfect size. They went up in price, but I still think they are worth it. I've used them to put monitors on while I was waiting for proper stands, to sit on, to hold other misc crap. I gigged with a pair of them back in the day.

I use some stackable crates from Wal-mart. They cost about $6 each and comes in a variety of colors.

Not sure if it was posted already but with those crates that don't quite fit the vinyl in I hacksaw off one side. Makes for a nice container + the records are easily accessible cause you can face the titles towards you and pull them out easy.

Should be fine like that, I'd add a bit more support when transporting them and keep them away from fluctuating temperatures (sunlight, radiators, heaters, heating pipes etc).

I still have crates for most of my vinyl, and the rest is boxed up.

My plans are to build shelving as part of re-doing my basement.

If I have a lot of space in my crate, would bookends help to keep my records from tipping? Would normal metal ones like this work? If not, any suggestions?

If I have a lot of space in my crate, would bookends help to keep my records from tipping? Would normal metal ones like this work?Should be fine since they're 9" tall. (If they were smaller sized ones I'd be worried about cracking the the record that's against it.)
