View Full Version : What Do You Drink When You Spin?

I think there's a thread like this on 1.0 but I can't find it on the 2.0 forum. If there is one already, mods please delete this thread.

So, What do you drink when you spin? For me, Fosters. Pure Aussie goodness in 175ml. Mmmmm.

Manu

At home or private party, anything goes as long as it's not full of sugar. Gigs: water, about 2 liters per 2-3 hours

When I worked the club scene, I would shoot Rumplemintz.. If you don't know what it is, its a peppermint schnapps @ 100 proof. We used to call it "snake bite medicine". So, when we got ready for a shot, we would use two fingers in the shape of snake fangs & hit the top of our hand like a snake bite. The bartender knew what we wanted & would send it down.

Which reminds me, How the hell do DJs go to the toilet in the middle of a mix? You get someone to take over mixing or what?

Which reminds me, How the hell do DJs go to the toilet in the middle of a mix? You get someone to take over mixing or what? Never go in the middle of a mix, I do mostly weddings and school gigs so I put on a long son or a small mini set that I record before the gig and then taake a bathroom run. Note to DJ's find the quickest way to the bathroom before your gig starts......

Put on "Free Bird"... its 13 minutes & some seconds long.... Seriously, just put on a long song 5 minutes or so & make sure you have one cued behind it. Most software will cue & play the next song up if your not back. Having said that, things can go wrong but, sometimes you gotta go when you gotta go. When that time comes.... you'll figure out something :)

I'll usually drink water or the occasional soda. I'll grab a Gatorade if it's available. When I was running my own mobile company, I would usually bring a cooler with various sodas, water, and Gatorade.

If it's a private party/house party where I'm not "working for someone," I might have an actual alcoholic drink, but I never, ever get drunk while spinning. I'm too much of a control freak to allow anything like that to impair my performance. I'll also rarely drink while doing practice sets at home. If I do, it'll be a fuzzy navel, a piņa colada, or a glass of Kung Fu Girl.

If I'm being paid to DJ somewhere, then I don't drink alcohol. I think I had one fuzzy navel during a paid gig in a restaurant years and years ago, but it was late in the evening when there was hardly anyone there, and the drink was given to me by the staff.

I would never drink alcohol during a mobile gig. There's just too much at stake, especially my reputation.

^^^------ This.

EDIT: Ok well let me change it a bit, I started with the "I DON'T drink when I work" but the fact is, the weddings I've done, even if you don't get something to drink, sooner or later someone brings me a drink..

So I just make sure I don't get drunk.

I tend to get very nervous before big gigs (my first wedding was the worst), but after the first 2 songs I'm chilled, 1 or 2 beers usually work wonders :) but that's it.

Depending on the club it can be one of the house drinks, redbull vodka, or just redbull. Sometimes pub cider too.

Washington Apples and Redbulls, maybe some water if i need to. But really i don't like to drink when i play, don't get me wrong, i love the feeling of being a little tipsy when i spin (I play better that way, i can relax and stop being a perfectionist) but the urge to piss always comes at the wrong moment!

Depends on the gig. If it's something even sem-professional, I just drink water or Koolaide. If it's just a house party I'm doing with friends, I generally drink Jolly Rancher Vodka (http://mixthatdrink.com/jolly-ranchers-vodka/) that I make myself. Either that, or just whatever people bring me. Something about being the DJ makes everyone want you to try whatever they brought....

Unfortunately all too often I forget to drink when I'm working...I mean anything and at the end of the night I am super dehydrated.

When I do remember to drink, it depends on the gig and the mood. If its a mobile gig, I will very rarely have anything alcoholic and if I do, its towards the end of the night. If its a club gig, I will have a couple of drinks and then it just depends on my drinking mood that night. Some of my standbys are a good beer, bourbon/whiskey & coke, flavored vodka (often grape) & sprite or tequila & ginger ale (it sounds strange but its really good trust me).

I was really surprised to see that MOST of the people posting here only drink water or gatorade, etc... and not alcohol. I never, ever drink any booze while I'm working, but honestly I thought I was one of the few that didn't! It's good to see that professionals in this forum are staying professionals and not trying to party while they're working! Cheers to us!

tut.

In an average set (2 hours), it shouldn't be an issue, but if I'm on 4 hours and find myself needing, I stick on an extended mix, set up the next tune, ask a mate to keep an eye, then run. I've never taken longer than the record to get back. Anyway guys, you can just pee in a bottle, so you've nothing to worry about!

That is a great way to get everyone to leave if you do EDM. If you are DJing at a school dance or whatever then it might be different. I'm just pretty sure people who come to a club go to listen and dance to music that isn't played 30 times a day by classic rock stations.

Only 2 beers maximum. DJing is like playing pool - there's definitely a comfort stage (IMO) where a couple of beers makes things go smoothly. Have one too many however, and even if you're not drunk, things will go badly awry!

On my Friday nights, since I work a day job, I typically will do Vodka and Red Bull.
On my Sat nights, no day job, I get to nap, so I do Gin and Tonics.
Every now and again just to throw up the bartenders at my residency, I get beer, (Michelob Ultra or Guinness)

Typically will have 2-3 drinks in a night. I also have a water bottle will me all the time.

Austin GoGreen

This past weekend was probably the first time I didn't have a sip in my whole DJ career.... usually i'm getting faded.

Bud Lights all night with Jager Bombs, Cherry Bombs, or Patron. I gotta have a drink on me at all times, which is why I drink Bud Lights all night... If I'm at the club, I get a bottle of Svedka or Absolut with mixers for me and my friends to drink. The bartenders/friends also bring me random shots up occasionally.

All I drink is Mountain Dew...and I end up going to the bathroom like 6 times throughout the night even sometimes in the middle of my set. I need it to keep me hyped up, it's my party fuel. I don't do Monster or Red Bull, just cups and cups of Mountain Dew. Drinks are free for the DJ at the club :P

But it depends on the city I am in.
In my area, the quality of the tap water varies A LOT from place to place.
