I made VU meter headphones by adding EL wire to a pair of headphones and modifying a sound-reactive inverter to respond to an audio signal. They light up in sync with the music. (follow link for video)

Agreed. Right now they look a little rough, but I think if you spent some time you could find a way to make them look nice.

My old stantons used to do this, they looked good (well like sony's anyway) and sounded great. Shame they fell apart like they were made from lego.
