i like it, but I really only use the keys. it feels solid and everything. my only detracting point is the pads suck. But i usually draw my beats or play them with the normal keys.

I miss the Pro Tools 10 Demo.

I'm going to buy a hardware synth or two at some point. I'd love a Minitaur and something else for leads/pads…right now, a Nord Rack 2 is leading the bunch, though I'll probably change my mind a hundred times before I buy one. I'd love a Virus TI2. And if I somehow start making money from music, there will be a Minimoog Voyager in my future.

I also could use a keyboard that doesn't suck, but I'll wait until I start taking piano lessons for that.

DJ setup is on a different wall, here (http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?47-Post-pics-of-your-setup-2-0-part-1&p=5483&viewfull=1#post5483).

The interface of this synth is incredible, the perfect one to learn. The sound is good, too clear to consider it for anlalog like duties, but it brings something new to my set up of softsynths (mainly DIVA, Ace, Reaktor prism and spark).

Seriously though, the university of oregon is nice enough to leave classrooms with real studio monitors unlocked which allows me to check my mixes and I have not so terrible speakers at my house (though they are commercial speakers not meant for production). But I actually do a bit of production on that exact old ass laptop and terrible ipod headphones. I use FL with mostly freeby VST's though I did break down and get Massive, Pianoteq, and b4. The only thing that really sucks with this ghetto setup is having to constantly export to .wav because my computer can't handle any of my songs as a single project. Sometimes when I am three or four projects deep changing things can be a real bitch.

How you like those monitor stands? just wondering which model they are, had been thinking about picking up a pair that looked similar

thehadgi
03-31-2012, 06:56 PM
They fit perfectly. BS300's from guitar center, 40 bucks. They had a similiar model that was like 96 per stand, so I opted for these. They're pretty heavy, and setup is basically three screws and they're good. They seem to be built learge enough to hold pretty big monitors, so anything bigger than my yamaha 50's would still probably do well. Not bad for 40 bucks I s'pose seeing how much some models go for

You should, cause stereo imaging on headphones sucks big time, unless you have some very high end open back headphones... you can't mix right with average headphones. I have some AKG K702 (400$ headphones) in my studio and I feel limited even with these compared to my KRK RP8.

yeah beethoven WROTE music, he didnt had to check if the bass clashed with the kick XD
Its actually pretty easy to do that just by looking at the waveform of the sub bass + kick while solo'd. I always check the waveform to make sure they're in phase!

not much, but here is my setup. building a BFM Table tuba to take care of the lows. This is probably some of the cheapest equip on the forums, but the end result is what matters. I will be getting a kaos pad though :)

My production gear is very limited (although my laptop is too of the line(nerd gamer)) because I'm just getting started with production.
Is it unusual that I produce using headphones? I usually do until I'm happy with it then I save a track to USB and play it through the CDJs. Is that a bad thing? I find the sound is pretty similar between headphones and monitors anyway..

I find the multiple screens is great for tv, a YouTube tutorial for FL Studio, Facebook and FL at the same time :)

Edge of my seat.

Nice neat setup.

I can't believe I hadn't even thought of having the mixer/sequencer/piano roll on another screen. All this time I've been closing each window every 5 seconds...
Thank you!

I'd have the KRKs If I had some money but again, I'm very new (10 days) to the production side of things.

Kind of want Wawrinka to win actually now!

And yeah, i like to just use the other screen for the mixer but putting the piano roll/ step sequencer up there is a very good idea too. I also have a frequency analysis plugin i sometimes put up there.

And about the monitors: that's what christmas is for eh?

Been hoping Wawrinka will win but I can't see him breaking serve.

Impressive Setup!

The only thing I was wondering about: judging by the selection of different monitor speakers having the ability to assess your sound seems to be quite important to you. Still there seems to be no acoustic room treatment at all...

Don't you have any problems with room modes, reflections etc. with those plain and empty walls?

04-02-2013, 10:27 PM
yea definitely, mainly because I rarely used the others to begin with. The apc I used for a while for gigs but the past few years I barely touched it. The mpk25 got stashed on the back of the desk once I got the axiom pro 49 thats on the left. I had been wanting to sell them for a while so they covered a good chunk of the push

Finally got an hour or so to play with it, and man you can really get sucked into that thing. Had a good basis of a chillout type track after 20-30min of just messing around and I really found myself just not even looking at the monitors, they ended up turning off for a while on their own and I didnt even notice.

personally I still love it, but thats a pretty big investment for someone just getting started. If you want to go all in then sure, but Id start out trying out various daws first and just messing around with them to get an idea of which you prefer before diving in to ableton head on. It might not be the one you like the best, and then if you get a push you really have no choice at that point

My humble little studio. Got two alesis elevate 3's (notice the beautiful programming books holding them up ), an akai mpk49 (really shouldn't have spent that kind of money on a keyboard but oh well), a hercules 4mx as my audio interface and a sm48 as my microphone. FL studio 10 is my DAW, and a 2008 gateway i3 is my computer.

Goes to show you can do a lot with a little (still wish I had a sub :P).

It still needs a lot of work, but it's a start. Didn't expect so much functionality off a $200 computer desk from Ikea. The speakers stands on the side sold me on it but I didn't realize until after we assembled it that there were hooks I could use for the headphones.

I am open to suggestions and recommendations for acoustic treatment, and gear placements.

Still need to get some real monitors; made some space for a keyboard and trackpad; the SL3 to be replaced with a heftier soundcard; and do some acoustic treatment around the whole room.

Then there's some stuff that I've tried to fix or needs to be serviced. In the lower picture you can find my DIY diffuser/bass trap which actually reduces reflections by a few decibels (edit : I miked the room, played some white noise from the monitors and recorded two takes for A/B comparison)

I'm not exactly an experienced producer but I would say that the most important things you can have in studio is your ears, competence in different fields of music and imagination.

How do you like Mashine?

At first I completely HATED it, only because I was used to working in a linear fashion like a typ. DAW. Once I wrapped my head around the workflow throwing down a groove is fun and quick. I've barely even scratched the surface of all it's capable of. The sound bank is HUGE and top notch quality. Could literally make an infinite amount of FULL songs with the provided sound libraries. The amount that you can tweak every little nuance of each sound is crazy.
So yeah, it's not for everyone , but I love it.

Cool screen setup... what graphics card are you using?

On-board Intel HD 4600
Fresco Logic USB adapter
AMD Radeon HD 5450

Nothing snazzy as its not being used for gaming, i also have it attached to my 50" TV using HDMI from the Radeon, power TV on and all 4 monitors cut off and display to TV only, works great!

It took me the whole weekend to get the hang of it.. so far I've written two songs with it, the other's missing a few parts etc.

My setup has changed a lot over the years but it's always been purely hardware (monitor and laptop are for work), which I may have to rectify soon. It's a bit of a mess now since I have a kid and I don't have much time for any of it but I'm trying to work on some new tunes when I have the time:
