I'm not sure how to explain other than you know it when you hear it. The Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno) is a good start. It would probably be best to go to Beatport (http://www.beatport.com/genre/techno/6) and listen to a bunch of songs in the Techno section. It's a very specific genre under the umbrella of Electronic Dance Music. It's one of the main ones, like House, Trance, or Dubstep. It has a somewhat more mechanical sound than most of the other genres. Like if House music was made by robots.

for an idea of what techno sounds like these days, check out the techno genre charts on www.beatport.com

older techno is typically faster than it is now, in the 140's for bpm, more similar to trance in tempo. techno now is typically 124-128 bpm. it's characterized by a heavy 4/4 kick with a rolling offset bassline, a snare/clap on the second and fourth pulse of the bar with a hi hat on the eighth. techno is what people are thinking of when they say untz untz untz.. there are many sub-genres of techno, such as minimal.. so i encourage you to explore a bit for yourself.

the vibe of techno is usually dark and heavy. a lot of techno features trippy vocal samples and simple melodies that aren't overly synthy or happy. in terms of real rave music, i see techno as yin and trance as yang.

hope that helps!

^^^ Holy shit someone managed to record that stuff and save it for years, or maybe came across it in a dusty vault somewhere?!!!

You'd think these old Detroit radio shows would have been remastered and released on CD by now, there must be millions of eager fans keen to hear the very origins of this sound, the Wizard etc. It'd be a money spinner for sure. The fact that no one has done this yet makes me think all the old recordings must have been lost somewhere along the line.
