I'll be DJing for a school dance in a little over a week and the school has given the radio station a budget to use for the dance. As it stands, the school owns no lighting equipment so I'm going to go shopping for them on Sunday. $1000 is the total budget the radio was given for putting the dance on, so we want to invest in some lighting and effects equipment now so we have it for future events. I'd like to keep the actual lighting and effects budget down to about $500 or $600 so we have more money for other things, but come Sunday when we actually do the shopping we'll finalize the decision.

Sooo...what do I need to know about lighting and effects? Best bang for the buck? What about lighting controllers? Racks to attach the lights? What other extra accessories might I need to factor into the price? How about a fog unit? And what is the 12V lighting connector on my Numark mixer for (I'm assuming some lights will move with the beat of the mixer)?

TELL ME EVERYTHING YOU KNOW! :)

the light output is for a bin/xlr light, to light your mixer up (in dark clubs)

I recommend fog/haze (with a cooler)

makes the lights SO much better, but dont skimp out on it, cheap ones arnt good for people with ashma (more money, cleaner fog)

pssl.com lighting packages

the 12 v on your mixer is for a little light

always use fog in a non smokey place because it really makes the lights show

Or just hand out free cigarettes on the door,

Seriously though, take a look at some of the cheaper synchonisable lighting like colour moonflowers as these give a fairly bright light output for a cheaper fixture and you wont need a controller.

On PSSL's website they're doing the ADJ DJ-SCAN 250's for $199 each, these are linkable without needing a dmx controller so you could maybe opt for a cople of those and a cheaper standard effect light.
