This was quite a fun one I got to do recently. We were asked for some white and blue HDJ-2000 with a tron legacy style light up ring but the LEDs should not be visible when off.
To achieve this I got some rings laser cut from coloured perspex to the same size as the metal rings on the HDJ-2000. Then I stuck a mask on the with 16 equidistant circles to mark where I had to drill

Then I drilled into the surface and glued SMD LEDs into the dips - the hope was that it would defuse the light a bit more and hold the LEDs steady while I soldered them.

Then to carry the power I soldered two rings of wire to the LEDs

As you can see I managed to melt a couple of the LEDs 1st time round by having the soldering iron too hot

Next the easy bit... Painting the other parts. I also drilled holes in the earcup 1 to pass the wires through and the rest to squirt hot glue through to hold the rings in place. The hot glue then re-sealed the holes when I had finished

And Here is the finished product. The LEDs are powered by 2 CR2032 batteries in the earcups and turned on and off with two micro toggle switches at the back

I have played with EL but it is trickier to power and tends to transfer a hum from the inverter so to keep the portability and sound quality LED is probably the best option even if it does not look as cool
