What's your thought? i am looking to get something inexpensive for home use. maybe small basement parties (20-30people). i rent yorkville equipment when i dj at weddings. I am just looking for something to practice with at home. i keep blowing my home stereo speakers. so i want something that is designed for djing...
thanks guys.
i am open to recommendations, but it needs to be in that price range and has to be powered/active.

I owned a set for almost 3 years. I bought them out of curiousity and because of their 200$/cab price back then. I brought them as spares, used them for vocal monitors OR brought them to camp for some music outdoors (or for free/low paying gis or outside gigs where I didn't want to risk my RCF and Yorkville cabs). They worked well and their mid and high frequency respose was actually quite good. They had ABSOLUTELY no bass however - none under 100hz anyway - so they worked well as vocal monitors OR with a sub or two. With a sub handling the low end, they actually sounded almost as good as some of my higher end stuff. For small house parties, Iwould get the 215Ds that provide at least a little more low frequency response. I am not a fan of Behringer gear in general, but I though the 212s performed adequately for the price and they didn't give me any trouble. For basement party type events, they should be fine. Look into the 15s if you want any bass however..

If it's just for home use while your practicing, why not get a nice pair of monitors instead??

He keeps blowing up his home stereo rig, so I don't think a nice set of studio monitors is such a good idea...

Thanks guys...
i don't think studio monitors would be sufficient enough if i decide to throw a small party...sometimes i get carried away with the volume knob and....well...then there is the electrical smell...:)

I see you are in Canada. What is you budget? There are quite a few good sounding powered speakers out there that are very affordable...

For 500$ a pair, you're not going to get much except Behringer. Add 200$ and you can look into a pair of Samson Auro D415As.

Add 350$ to your 500$ budget and you can get a pair of my favorite entry level powered speakers : Yorkville's YX15P. Or, you can always start with a single one and add another when funds become available. Good thing about these or the Auro D415As is that they can handle small wedding type gigs by themselves. (without needing subs) The YX15P also has a great built-in mixer section that makes it very flexible for use all by itself (you can plug in a source + microphone at the same time). You also have a built-in 3 band EQ.

Here is a link to my review on the YX15Ps :

Other options at the 700$ mark include Peavey PR12Ds or PR15Ds OR even PV115Ps.

For 500$ you can get a pair of Behringers OR a single better powered speaker for the moment. Or you can spend the 700$-850$ for a pair of Samsons or Yorkvilles which to me would be a better investment if you can use them on DJ gigs and not have to rent. I have had my YX15Ps for over 4 years (I bought them as soon as they came out) and have only good things to say about them. They also include a 2 year "even if you break it" warranty. A big plus!

Here is a great deal (only a single one available though) that would KILL the Behringers and work well for house parties :

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/WHARFEDALE-Titan-15-inch-GREY-Active-DEMO-/260800669535?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item3cb8ee675f

Located in Canada (no duty or other charges) and free shipping. These are LOUD and have an amazing mixer section - even RCA ins. They don't sound quite as good as the Yorkviles or Samsons but WILL get louder (they are more powerful) and can damage hearing if used indoors at high levels (so be careful).

If I were you, I'd go with Mackie Thumps over Samson products. I prefer Samson for mics, maybe. But not speakers. The thumps, although they do clip quickly, if you have the EQ set right, they sound pretty good and get pretty loud. Loud enough for your party, anyway.

The Auro D415A (even out of the box) sounds as good as the Thump 15 but get slightly louder before limiting. Both are good choices for the OP's application. I have never been a fan of Samson speakers either until I tried the powered Auro series. (the D415A being my favorite all around performer in the line). they are very smooth overall (for their price point) and have a nice crisp top end.

I had a pair of B212D's, they were ok for small parties. No bass what so ever on them but i found the high's to be ok at reasonable volume levels. At high levels they became a bit harsh. Price to performance id have to say they were a good buy for me when i was starting out. I ended up selling them and bought a pair of yorkville nx520p. I find the yorkvilles can hold their own for bass in a small setting, larger rooms / more people you would need a sub.

My advice would be save a bit more for some better quality speakers that will last you, check around for some good deals on used equipment. If you have to get new, then i would agree with Al and get the yorkville cabs or the titans.

i own a pair and they work pretty well for me. for basement parties the cheapest way to go is get 1 15 since they put out more bass than the 12in and you won't have to worry about a sub.

Bit off topic - but has anyone tried changing the drivers? especially in the B215D? I've got a pair just sitting in my room that I use with my TV and ipod and am thinking about replacing the LF drivers
