Hey everyone. I'm working on a flyer to advertise a local event. First time I've done something like this, any suggestions on how to improve it?

Flyer is posted at the bottom of the event page, haven't started printing them yet.

Any feedback would be appreciated :D!!

Edit:Rek brought to my attention not everyone can get to Facebook because of work. Here's the flier, somewhat small version of it though. Couldn't figure out how to post it here any b

If you post the flyer here, you'll get more responses.

Like most ppl who work in an office, I can't click on fb links @work. Oh and if the flyer is saved on fb server, that will be blocked also.

Ah, I didn't even think of that, haha. Gimme a minute & I'll get the actual file up.

Edit: Here we go.

I made the pic a link to the file, which shows original size.

As for the flyer, i'm not a fan. too many things going on with the fonts. And the commas look weird, imo.

I would put the names in list form, removing the need for the commas and because all the names could fit on one line. I do like the background pic.

It's kind of a disaster. Too many fonts, too many colors. Too hard to read the event time/price.

Awesome, thanks for the input.

So, I guess my changes are going to be:

1) Less font variety. I'll probably reduce it to only three fonts. One for the event name, one for the DJs listing, & one for the info.
2) List format for names. I'll have to remove the info in the bottom left to make room. Should I just move the location info to the right side?

Is it a metal show?

typeface* not font, font is a family/group of typefaces :school:

i would use just a single one for the body text, unless someone has a specific logo, in which case use their vector/graphic etc. lose the glow too, looks cheesy, if you need the text to stand out, use a stroke line,

you shouldnt need to make room, since the flyer is 60% empty space, you could fit that info on 3x over and it not be over crowded.

last Q) is this going to be printed? or just for online use? i say that since thats not a format printers use so you might need to re format the shape, as well as moving everything to allow for a bleed/crop

Is it a metal show?

Nope...It didn't even occur to me that the type of music would need to be on there :S This is why I don't normally design these things.

Alrighty, I'll get rid of the glow on them. I can see where you're coming from.

It will be printed, what would I need to reformat it to & how would I go about doing that?

Thanks for the help guys!!

find out what paper you will be using. a standard is A6 flyer (postcard sized)

canvas needs to be 100mm x 148mm at 300dpi (print copy will need to be CMYK colour too) and make sure all your information is within the "safe zones" for printing,

ask your printers for a template or exact dimensions with crop/bleed allowances etc. they will be happy to give it you, since they wont have to keep re sending work back for it to be fixed etc.

To expand on what Marc S is saying, this is what a flyer for print usually looks like:

http://i.imgur.com/Z1Yhu.png
http://i.imgur.com/d8qlq.png

Those are just screenshot of a PDF so the proportions aren't exact but it shows the colour scale, printer's marks, and crop lines.

Flyers should generally be done in Illustrator so they're vectors, the workspace should be a standard size (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_size#C_series), as mentioned the colours should be CYMK not RGB unless it's a digital print shop in which case they'll tell you which to use, and the file format should generally be PDF, TIFF, or an Adobe editable file.

Some other things people said which I want to stress and expand on:

- Fonts/Typeface: Stick to 2, event name / everything else. Also try to choose a standard serif or sans serif font when possible... Never use Comic Sans, Impact, or Papyrus.

- Glow: Looks tacky almost 100% of the time.

- The comment about "is this a metal show" came from the fact that's the vibe the flyer gives (predominantly red, rocker hand signs in the picture, and so on.) The vibe your flyer gives off people will assume will be the vibe of the event.

Printed the flyer I posted look like this: http://i.imgur.com/uIL8E.jpg (the phone number is blocked out for when I posted it to reddit.)

The type of music doesn't necessarily have to be on there. In fact, very few posters I've seen actually advertise the genre. But nearly everything about that poster implies it will be hard rock/metal show, from the fiery orange glow, to the sign of the horns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_of_the_horns) hand gesture, to the font choices.

I'd also get rid of the text explaining the QR code.

Here's our local event poster company, just to give you some ideas:
