Acquired a Technics SL-DZ1200 yesterday and set it up using DVS and traktor scratch pro through my S4.
The timecode is working just fine (according to the tutorials I read) I just practise baby scratches, drops and stabs.
And Im absolutely loving it!!
Im just wondering about the Torque on this thing. When I hold the platter and try to let it go on the "1", should I experience a delay as it starts spinning and the need to nudge? or should it just "go" and not "slow start" as it comes up to speed?
Im not sure what to expect, because I have never even touched a turntable or heard one in real life.
Not sure if Im making sense, but if someone can let me know if its normal that would be great as its making my mixing sound a little off.
Cheers

In turntable mode a DJ will have to adjust further settings like the brake speed (there is a back panel control knob). There is also a top panel control labelled 'instant change' near the reverse switch. The instant change button directly affects the reverse switch and start/stop functions. Meaning if the instant change button is pushed…as soon as you press the start button, the source will start instantly from its current location. If you hit the reverse switch with instant change on then you will instantly change the direction of the source sound. With the instant change button off, the SL-DZ1200 is just like a Technics SL-1200 analog deck, such that when you press the start button there is a very slight drag before the deck reaches the required speed.

i think that is what you are describing correct?

Not really. Basically the deck is playing through Traktor scratch software, if I hold the platter on my technics the song stops, when I let it go there is a noticable drag as it starts playing again and comes back up to speed. Is that normal?

Maybe Im pushing too hard on the deck and its affecting the motor or something??

probably a combination of latency in traktor and vinyl start speed. should be normal for all i can tell

Agreed, although I suspect the problem is all vinyl start speed, and the latency in traktor is negligible.

have you tried the 'instant change' button near the reverse switch

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually think the problem is when I touch the platter, the motor is also slowing down. I am assuming the motor should keep spinning as normal when touching the platter, correct?
I have Checked out some YouTube clips, and they talk about sticky platters, which is what I may b referring to, although itsbhard to tell because I do not know what is normal and what is not lol.
They weren't very good tables. They had some bad digital distortion when playing media. I don't know if that applies to time code, but I wouldn't discount it.

now i'm confused  they use direct drive motors so when you hold down the platter logically the motor slows down if i'm not mistaking?

nah. they seem to work fine with timecode. supposedly only a problem when using low quality files and/or the keylock on the decks (which you don't need with a DVS)

Maybe you're pushing too hard on the platter? The motor shouldn't slow when you're touching it. The platter should take a bit to get back up to speed, though, like a turntable.

Just with keylock on. From what I can remember, the players don't even accept high quality mp3s.

This maybe showing how "new" I am at this. wish I had a mentor or something in the area.
Using timecode, I can baby scratch and it sounds pretty good. But when I do "Drops" I get a slow startup so the drop is not in time. More noticable when I am dropping "Vocals". SO - if I drag the platter back to a point, release my finger, I dont get an instant "drop" and so the drop sounds out of place and not in time.
I will make a small video clip - its driving me a little crazy lol

You have to push the platter, you can't just let go. That's how vinyl works, anyway. I'm assuming the DZ is the same.

AWESOME!! Best news ever. I had previously been learning to scratch on the S4 job wheels, and so the "Drop" or "Release" was always instant - and so it seemed a little odd that it was different on a table. Now I have to get use to "Pushing" the platter a little as I release it. Thanks for the help guys, I can now get back to practicing without worrying that the motor was stuffed or something. Cheers!

Wow I see most that answered do not use or never used tt. Just like the 1200 when you're scratching you have to give it a little push when letting it go. I have these deck and been using them for 3 years as you know.
Its funny when people bring up the Youtube video's calling them crap.
But non have used these with a dvs which are perfect.
The OP its normal. Your getting the drag cause your not giving the table a push.
And your just letting them go.
Also check and see if you got the updates firmware on the decks.

Thanks again, reassuring me that it isnt the motor or something crazy. Im starting to get a hang of things and am now "pushing" at just the right speed to keep everything in sync. Seriously, this budget cheap unit has given me much needed enthusiasm. Just have to figure out how to get those TEARS sorted.

Why would you be holding the actual platter? If you are treating it like a 1200 which effectively you would be, the platter should slide underneath. In all my years, I never held the platter for anything other than stop! Hold the disc on the top instead that moves separately to the platter......

I agree- I've been using dz12's for the last 3 years with traktor and find these with DVS a perfect fit for what i like to spin. They accept all MP3, Wave, etc.. with no problem. The only problem i see is when played in keylock w/o dvs. In this mode, you cannot scratch w/o hearing the funny digital noise, but outside of keylock, these TT work fine just like the standard 1200's and I have both. These things are solid in my opinion and the only reason I'd consider changing to CDJ's is because of social pressure
