I am apart of a catholic youth program, and I was just selected to DJ at the next coming event for the group. It is a Catholic Coffee House metting. There will be a few guest speakers and about 50 teens are going to show up. Im going to purchace a BCD-3000 this week and am gonna find a set of small speakers to use becasue there will only be about 50 people. Me being a Hip Hop kind of guy, I have no idea what kind of music could be used at this event. I think i could use some "chill" music, (some one said Jack Johnson) but if you guys know any bands that play chill coffee house music, or specific songs i could use, that would be great.
Thanks In Advance,
PatriotsFan
I would check out a few of these artists:
Dustin Kensrue (the lead singer of Thrice's solo stuff)
Shawn McDonald
Elliot Smith
Format
Mae
Ben Harper
Interpol
Young Love
If you search these artists on Itunes you will be linked to similar music.

For a coffee house, I personally would recommend some trip-hop, such as:
Portishead (especially their Dummy album - an absolute classic)
Massive Attack (I would recommend Mezzanine)
Morcheeba (Who Can You Trust? is a piece of art)
Jem (Finally Woken has some nice tracks on it)
Weekend Players (not completely trip-hoppy, but Pursuit of Happiness is a beautiful album nonetheless)
I think that all of these albums are completely "clean" insofar as explicit lyrics are concerned, but I am not 100% sure on some of them. (I would have the most doubts about the Massive Attack.)
All of them have some really gorgeous, chilled-out tracks on them. If you had to buy just one of them, though, the Portishead is the best of the bunch hands-down... It's the most well-known of them (with the Massive Attack being close).
Oh, and of course, play Soulja Boy.
Good luck!

[Just kidding about the Soulja Boy.]

Oh, one more - Rose Smith's DawnRaiding. It's a little-known album, but one of the most beautiful chill-out albums I own. Absolute piece of art. The title track and the single, "Life Changes," are absolutely spectacular. You can probably find it used via an Amazon seller for an extremely reasonable price.
Of course, the obscurity might be a downfall (as it may be for other artists I've mentioned)... it all depends on if they're wanting to dance to pop hits, or if they're just wanting excellent chilled-out background music.
Again, good luck to you!

Check out Entertainment Resources Group's website. They have compilations specifically for more "spiritual" occasions. It could give a good idea of what is acceptable. I think it's called the Nu Life Traxx. Good luck.
lol yeah, play some soulja boy..
