Hi I just got a vms4 to use as a 3rd system as everyone knows the vms4, has low output issues im wondering to boost the signal ,im looking for more gain not necessarily volume and of course keep the noise floor low, would I use a pre amp or a di box,it would go in the chain between the vms4 out put and powered speakers in put

A small quality mixer or a preamp would be my choice.

Thanks ,im looking for something that can be rackmounted in a 3 to 4 space amp case because ill be bringing a power conditioner anyway so a mixer prob isnt a option

Why is a mixer not an option? Here are some that can be mounted into a rack.

I actually use the above Behringer in my rack.

What about the Rane MP 2S?

Or something like a rack mount EQ - or compressor, if you want it to rack mount - this could allow you to add a little more functionality from your "pre-amp"

I think my best bet is a decent preamp,im just want to avoid adding any noise to the singal

It's a bit overkill, but an ART MX225 is 1U rack mount, has XLR both in and out, and will do exactly what you want without putting too much crap into the signal path. And the price is reasonable. Plus ya never know when the extra ins (second mixer or ipod backup) or outs (extra speakers) might come in handy.

If you are going with a rack mounted mixer, here is One i have personally used and it is pretty bad ass
