View Full Version : Funny (and cool) story

Lotsa stuff happened last night, some hilarious, some very cool.

I get home from work and head over to this guys house who I know. He's extremely wealthy (family's worth like $80 million), has some nice connections, and has been talking about throwing some events so I figured I should at least hear what he has to say. Anyways, I get there and he's with his buddy, some other rich kid living off of daddy's money. I call em "kids" cuz when you're in your mid to late 30's but still act like you're 18, you're still pretty much a kid right? (I'm not being flattering with this comment btw)...

So they put on my Acid Tek demo, and begin to talk. They're like "this mix is okay, but..." and the guy I know goes into how he's gonna start mixing on his own. He then goes into this speil about this state of the art 32 channel studio console mixer he's gonna buy cuz some dude told him about it. Um...why does he need a 32-channel studio console mixer to mix tracks together on his PC?
I'll tell ya why...cuz he's a dumbass...that's why

Not to mention the guy has absolutely zero musical talent or experience whatsoever.

His buddy chimes in and starts talking about DJ's in general, explaining how, in his opinion, DJ's are too narrow minded and stick to one genre only. They need to expand, mixing all genres, cutting in and out. So I say "you mean like, mix hip-hop to hard trance to DnB back to ambient" and he's like "Exactly!!" Why? "Cuz that's what all the really cool DJs in New York and L.A. are doing" he says (somehow, I highly doubt this) Plus, that's what Sasha and Digweed said when he hung out with em at a party (ooooooo).

Yeah, right.

He may have been at a party with Sasha and Digweed, and they probably said something to him (I'm guessing it was "Security!!" hehe), and that's just how he interpreted it in his unknowledgable little brain. He then went on to say there is probably only one good DJ in Denver because this DJ does what the guy claims DJs should do. I asked what exactly this DJ does. He said the guy spins ALL genres, cutting in and out of hip-hop, rap, R&B, reggae...you name it.

Um, hello. Those are all very closely related genres where one can actually do what you are saying, moron.

Anyways...dude goes on to how he's gonna do his own mixes.

I respond with "So that thing you said about beatmatching (cuz he had mentioned the term earlier). That's easy right? You'll just naturally know how to do it instantly right?"

And he's like "Right"

My God! Do people like this not know that they are making themselves out to be complete and total idiots when they talk to anyone with even the most rudimentary of musical knowledge/experience?

Anyways, I soon go home and my other frend is waiting there for me. Now THIS guy is one who knows what he's doing. He toured for 15 years in a band that would've been signed to a major label if the lead singer hadn't thrown a hissy-fit. He's written hundreds of songs, is co-owner of a top denver studio (backed by George Clinton & P-Funk, who they produce whenever George is in town), is a trained Studio/Production Engineer, has major contacts in the industry, and promotes large successful events. For their last event, they rented out The Hard Rock Cafe in Denver for New Year's Eve and had lines out the door, and you just don't GET to rent out The Hard Rock anywhere (especially on New Years Eve).

Well, he's known these other guys for a while...we have a nice laugh about the whole thing. He says that those guys have been talking for years now, and even though they have the means, they'll never do anything, and even if they do, they'll screw it all up.

However, then he tells me about an upcoming event he wants to put on and he wants ME  to help him promote and spin at. I guess it will be at a major Denver venue, (18 and up with bar for 21+) complete with national acts flown in, dancers, fire spinners, a theme, full production and promotion, security, tickets sold, lights and video, and maybe even footage shot to market to networks (The guy recently finished doing some soundtrack for STARZ), plus payment of a set fee + profit sharing.

I'm like....um...lemme think about that for a sec...

um....YES!

I've heard enuff bullshit regarding these things to last a lifetime, but I do know if there's anyone I know what can actually pull it off, it's my friend here, so I'm thinking there's a good chance that the ball is gonna start rolling for me quite soon.

Just goes to show that if you don't act like the first two guys, and always conduct yourself in an upstanding manner, you attract the right folks while keeping the schwagg at bay, and good things are likely to happen. :)

can it be sponsored by djforums.com? ;) ;) (well....not like we have any money.....but it would be cool to see our name displayed!)

Sounds like a cool deal dude! I say GO FOR IT! and good luck! and tell us how it is! I know some amazing (and professional) Tek DJ's from up here, if you'd like to create an all TEK nite, they might be interested ;)

You should tell those rich dumbass friends of yours to go ahead and put on their little show. Lets see how many people show up. And how badly they fumble

Actually, bringing one or more of them down here may actually be a possibility.

We need some notable headliners that will cause a good draw.
Getting some Montreal DJs would help add to the intrigue.

The thing is, they'd have to have already established some sort of name for themselves. Not like "World Class" but at least quite well known within the city, so we can market em well down here.

No one here spins Techno anyways. It's all House. I think it would be a great idea to change things up a bit. I would love an all techno night, as all the good DJ's I know out here spin different genres, and I was struggling with how to bring em all together successfully, and still fit whatever theme we decided on.

My friend is ready and prepared to fly folks in. He's actually currently checking with an N.Y.C DJ he knows.

Keep in mind that this is serious.

I mean, it's still in the prelim stages, I'm not the one making the final decisions, and there's always the chance that it won't happen but if you could approach a few of them with the idea, see what they say, and get back to me, then I could put them in touch with my friend to talk details.

Plus any promo material, links to their websites, etc, would be cool to have.

He told me he'd like to have the plan finalized in about 3 weeks so we could start working at making it happen.

Here's some prelim details so you can give them an idea of what the event will be like:

-City: Denver, Colorado (during ski season too, so if they ski or board, that's an added bonus)

Proposed date: Rough estimate = 6 to 8 weeks from now. Mid-March? Perhaps a bit earlier.

-The venue is undecided, but the main place we're looking at is a converted old theater that probably fits around 500- 700 or so people (maybe more) It's well known for hosting events such as these, and well known acts have played there (I saw Basement Jaxx put on their show there last time they were in town).
My friend knows the owner and is almost certain he could get the venue.

-It will be an all night event (8 or 9 PM to 2 AM)

-It will be 18+, will full bar for those 21+

-We're trying to think up some sort of theme. My friend suggested a "fetish/lengerie" type thing but still not sure.
(A good reason to have tek DJs rather than house DJs if we used this motif)

-There will be entertainers. He's already got a bunch of strippers/dancers from the high end Denver clubs at his beck and call if we want em to put on a little show. Plus, maybe fire spinners, other novelties.

-Light show, visuals (video), security will be provided.

-Full promotion.

-Pre-purchased tickets plus tickets sold at the door. This is why we need at least one "draw" DJ so people will consider it worthwhile to pay to get in.

-Perhaps video the whole thing and market it to networks using his connections.

-A well connected promoter with knowledge, experience, and a proven track record, as well as being a top notch sound engineer so I can assume the sound system will rock.

-Set fee plus profit sharing amongst the major contibutors, plus plane ticket, hotel. Not sure what other expenses are required to cover but I can find out.

So, if you could pass this information on to any of the top pro Tek guys you know, I'd appreciate it.

Keep me posted.

I know 4 great tech DJ's, all are WELL established in MTL (well, established in the 'underground' that is).

some are on this board, actually.

Kilobyte (and his partner in crime, Freebass)

Toltech (spins some dirty SCHRANZ style german tek, a la chris leibing)

and Sarcastic (solid smooth shit....I cant explain, but he's fooking good!)

I know system copy has access to some more international-type DJ's.

http://www.level4productions.com/

check em out ;)

many more good DJ's around here, dude...pick a genre! :)

I'd volunteer myself, but I aint quite at that level yet :(

Okay, I'll look into it. Have those guys check out this post in the meantime.

I should be able to have a lot of pull with my friend on trying to make this an all Tek event, as he's not nearly as knowledgeable about the electronica scene as I am (A big reason why he pulled me into this)

I think I just thought of a great name for the event. Since Denver is ALL house (not even hard house, but that 110 - 125 BPM loungy style house) and there are LOTS of knowledgeable fans of other genres who are disgusted at this.

I think I'd like to do a Tek event entitled:

"Burning Down The House"

With appropriate flyers and visuals.

That should attract the attention of every disgruntled Tek fan/raver kid for miles. :D

Yeah, I know, but it's catchy...something people will remember.

Plus, the name says something about the event.

Put a picture of a burning house on the flyer, maybe have a looped video clip of the same to play on a side screen dring the course of the night.

I'll run it by him and see what he says.

On a side note...

The top local guy is Ty Tek

Check his stuff out at www.djtytek.com and lemme know what you guys think of him and how you'd rate compared to him.

Closest he comes is Tech-House (although he markets himself often as techno and his name just screams techno).

Those damn Casa Del Sol guys though, almost single-handedly ensuring that Denver stays house. grrrrrrrr.

My friend throws regular shows. Up til now, he's focussed on Hip Hop/R&B, but wants to branch out into other genres.

He does know how to promote a show, regardless of the genre though. I'm around as a sort of "consultant" to give him more detailed info on the scene.

If it goes over well, it could be the start of something. If not, well, there will be other shows, but they will probably focus on a different genre(s).

Sort of like the "pilot" run of a T.V series. Testing the waters, but not to the point of cutting corners, etc.

halfway thru his Live at Vinyl set...

pretty funky house with a tech feel, quite similar to Jay Tripwire's style (Jay is a DJ and producer here in Vancouver, and is becoming well known on the international scene).

solid mixes for sure and there are techno elements infused within the music, but it ain't techno -- although there's another set there I should listen to

I'm positive I could hold my own against him -- his ability to hold a smooth mix is stronger, but on the other hand, I would have mixed four tracks in the same amount of time that he's mixed two.

if you want to hear a short set of mine (30 minutes), go to the media section of my website, and click the audio link. none of the mixes were practiced, so you'll get a good idea of how I play live.

What's your background/experience, btw?

Just wondering, cuz j3 implied that you had connections.

One word of advice though

You guys at level4productions really should update your web site and make it more "professional" looking, sorta along the lines of what Ty Tek has done with his site. I mean the main flash page is good, but when you click down deeper, it gets a bit rudimentary.

I don't mean any offense by this, so please don't take it in a bad way. After all, you guys probably have more experience and a much bigger following than I do.

It's just that if I point my friend at the site, he may be a bit influenced into thinking that you're just an amateurish bunch of kids, which may not be the case at all, but well....you know how advertising works, sorta, right?

If no one knows how, maybe you could pool your funds and hire a pro web designer. Usually not terribly expensive. Or you can dl a Dreamweaver demo for free, get the crack, and then you can design some pretty cool looking stuff from there, if you have the time.

CB2--I'll be in touch with the Level 4 crew this weekend, and give ya a heads up. Actually, you're invited to listen to 'em play on Tuesdays (see the thread below, club246 radio)

Okay, will do.

Don't worry though. If those guys are halfway decent and I can get my idea for the theme approved (I'll talk to my friend tonight), I'll definitely be a strong proponent of trying to get some of them down here.

See, the thing about promotions a lot of times is that even if a DJ doesn't have the "fame", if they got the skills, and especially if they are from some exotic foreign-sounding place, plus are playing a different genre than what folks here can normally hear live, a promoter can often get a nice draw by hyping them up so to speak.

Kinda like how your average person says..."Ooooooo...he's from the U.K.? He must be good". And your more knowledgeable person will just think that U.K. DJ is just a DJ they haven't heard of yet.

I think the Montreal + all-tek night is a strong selling point by itself. You guys do have a strong techno scene up there, right?

So I'll keep you posted.

Well, I ran my theme by my friend this weekend and he was all for it, so it looks like this event is gonna happen

Steve (DJ Sarcastic) from Level4 contacted me via email a few days ago, and I'm writing him up a long email with all the details.

I'll also post all the info in a new thread once I finish writing it up (tonight), cuz we're looking at bringing in 3 DJs, and regardless of how things go with level4, I still wanna keep one spot open for someone at-large to come in as well. Someone here, maybe? ;)

My name....uh...you'll get that in the info post. (Dammit! and I kept it secret for so long)

See, I don't get it.

Not only do I find out my DJ name is used as a trademark to sell yuppies really expensive end tables, but now I also seem to be somehow collaborating with internationally known lingerie models to create original HARD HOUSE (!??) tunes, released on wax and played in top clubs around the world, as this link bears witness to:

http://www.harderfaster.net/?sid=&section=reviews&action=showreview&reviewid=32725

Wow. He even called me "Talented". Why, thank you Scottie.

I guess I must've been drunk or stoned or tweeked or something, cuz to be honest with you, I don't recall any of it.

And I'd think this would be easy to remember:

From "harderfaster.com"...

"Well the blurb that comes with the vinyl says "galloping beat" and that it is - mixed with a bouncy yet driving bass line to create a real full on effect. Stabby synths dart in and out while filtered hoovers rise and fall. Atmospheric fx give a real sense of depth, and phased and flanged riffs give the track pace and backbone! Nicely produced and definitely worthy of some space in yer bag!"

woowoo  hardhouse! woowoo  hardhouse!

er, yeah... anything with hoovers, and my bag just knows to spit it out

Hey man, long time no see...whassup?

Guess you got here a bit late to see, but this whole thing ended up falling thru due to the questionable motives of my "friend" and co-promoter.

The details are in the other thread in this forum about the Denver Event moving forward.

But he'll get his when I release my next demo....I got some samples...plus an idea for the title & artwork....hehe.
