Hi chaps, did a search but couldn't find the answer I was looking for so thought I may as well ask.

Looking for a decent pair of headphones to start mixing with, but don't want to fork out a lot, budget is around £60 I'd say. Would it be wise to buy a used pair? Brand new the way to go?

Cheers in advance!

New or used, that is a matter of opinion, but as a beginner, you will manage just fine with a pair of Allen & Heath's XD 40 or Sennheiser's range up to £60. But it is pretty much what you prefer, there are some crappy headphones out there, but I'd say that you should manage just fine if you steer away from Behringer, Numark and the other lower quality brands.

I recommend Sony mdr-v55 (i have those) or Sennheiser HD 205. You can't go wrong either one of those. And prices are in your budget range.

Thanks guys, all repped.

Was tempted by the A&H but I think for starting off I'll go for something a bit cheaper, since the Sennheiser 205s are half the price of the Allens. Unless you guys can convince me that the Allen's are worth it! The Sony's are £25 more than the 205s but I'm thinking if I were to pay that much I'd get the Allens for a tad extra.

Contrary to lost connection's advice, the Numark Red Waves are decent (A friend owns a pair) and Phil Morse of DigitalDJTips.com gave the new Behringer HPX6000 a pretty good review ( http://www.digitaldjtips.com/2012/03/review-behringer-hpx6000-dj-headphones/ ). For bedroom DJing you don't have to be as critical as if you were playing in a large club with a massive sound system. Truth be told most headphones for bedroom use will be ok for now until you figure out what you are looking for/want in headphones. Also, headphones like speakers are a personal choice...They all have different sound characteristics to them and so the best thing is to go listen to a pair that you are thinking about and decide for yourself.

Not to bump...but I didn't want to start a new thread.
I have the chance to rent the Sony MDR-V150's. Has anyone heard anything about these on-the-ear headphones? I'm wearing a pair right now, they don't sound too bad listening to music via turntable and a usb soundcard. I've read that the drivers are the same as the crappy Walkman headphone drivers via head-fi.org.

If not, then anything in the ~$30 would be a good suggestion.
Keep in mind that I'm just mixing at home for now, and don't have any real good headphones (I have Bose IE2 earbuds, but they're not the best for mixing/DJing)

The Sony MDR-V150s are pretty poor to be honest. I had a pair a few years ago. Their sound isn't very clear, and the headband breaks fairly easily in normal use, but hey they are cheap.

If you can stretch to getting Sennheiser HD205s, they are much better.

I'd recommend something like Sony MDR150 AND start to save money for better in the pricerange of 150ish.

I second the v700s. I have used them for a few years and love them. You can get a set of refurbs for pretty cheap.

Alright. The $50 price range is up for grabs so I'll have a look at the ones suggested. What is the wear-and-tear like on the V700s? I notice they fold up, and I've heard a lot about folding head phones, back and forth.

HD-280s! $99 new and definitely worth it. More flat than bass heavy, so not ideal for DJing but they're very comfortable

My v700s are a tank. I don't fold them, so I haven't had any issue. I also don't sweat all up in them so I don't have any issues with the padding. Mine are literally in the exact shape I purchased them in years ago.

haha well I love mine, but I've heard stories of having trouble beatmatching because the bass gets drowned out. Oh well.

Phones with exaggerated bass often drown the other frequencies, and give you less detail. The clarity and isolation of the HD-280s will make mixing easier IMO. The Sony V-700s are great cans for the money, but beware that with some abuse they can crack at the knuckle/swivel joint.

To give y'all an update: I went and bought the HD280s. Love the quality so far and the ability to repair/replace parts myself is a really cool feature!

Well months down the line I went for the 205 IIs, got them late August and they broke the morning of NYE! Something to do with a faulty connector like I have with all Sennheiser products... Trying to see if I have any warranty on them, gonna revisit this list too since at the mo I am getting no practice in at all.

would but xmas and the price of alcohol has boded too much for me - if i were paying £65 i'd rather pay the extra tenner and go for allen heath xd40s. so im swaying towards the sony mdr-v55s (50 squid) and will probably get them later today if no one gives me any reason otherwise
