View Full Version : Anyone collect tapes?

I can't say that I still buy them all that often, but I have somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 I reckon. Starting in the mid-80s I used to record tracks off the radio (as that was the only way to hear new hip-hop songs here back then) and I never taped over a tape once it was full, so I have a lot of old mixes, live performances, interviews and stuff that are probably quite rare.

^Dope! Go thru that shit and post pics of the good ones!

I threw all my tapes away long ago, and I regret that now. That shit right there (especially the rare HH stuff) is spectacular blogging "writing" material. Especially if you have a way to get the uber rare shit ripped to mp3.

BTW: Seems like there is a mini resurgence of love for cassettes lately... Fat Beats is even getting into the action...

MAN!!!! I Just boxed up most of my cassettes (full length & Cassette singles) about a month ago. I don't think I'll be able to sell them but sure would love to unload them (along with all these damn CDs).

No, but I still have all of my old ones (only 30 or so). I pretty much skipped tapes as a kid, practically going straight from vinyl to CD.

I bought a tape player last year with a view to going through my collection (over a long period of time) and ripping any stuff that I felt was worth it, but it was just such a damn ball ache.

Part of the problem is, when I first started I was meticulous with labelling, so the earlier tapes have full artist/track listings, or it'll say if it's in interview or live mix or whatever, but then later on I got slack with doing that, so I have TONS of tapes with nothing written on them at all. Anyone that's used tapes knows what a pain it is just to skip forward 5 minutes, even compared to vinyl where you can just lift the needle and drop it further in.

Back in the day I used to lend out a lot of my original tapes and some of the inlays got lost or messed up, so what I did is remove all of them and put them in a suitcase, then I made new inlays just out of paper so if they got lost/ruined, I wouldn't care. That was fine, except now I have a bunch of tapes with plain white inlays with just the album name on them, and a fuck ton of original inlays in a suitcase, and again, I just can't be bothered with going through everything and sorting it all out.

It's one of those tasks that's so overwhelming, I can't even be bothered to begin, haha.

I just spotted a World Famous Beat Junkies Volume 1 Featuring DJ Babu in that plastic tub of yours.

Ebay the fuck out of that and get paid, that right there is historical shit. I would not be surprised if you got over 100 bucks for that.

Check out this guy's collection (Soul Condor)

You can zoom way in on those images on this post... http://officialperiodic.blogspot.com/2011/01/gottapes-soul-condors-tape-hoard.html

As you can see, he's meticulous about his tapes. Those OG Juice Freestyles are INSANELY historical from an enigmatic champion spitter who didn't drop hardly anything on vinyl or CD.

So, yeah, don't throw out your tapes people!

Check out this dudes OG Old School Tapes, he goes by the name of Dutch Master and is an expert on the good shit...

I still have my old cassettes when I was a kid. I finally finished burning all of them late last year to mp3's. I have a decent recording program that has a timer and an automatic reverse cassette deck. The cassette deck also has a pitch control since cassettes can stretch after continously being played. It was a pain adding in the track-markers but it was well worth it since a lot of music from bck then is impossible to find. If you have the time to do it, do it!

I still have tons of 90's hiphop on tape. I didn't really start buying cds until around 2001. I need to buy a cassette player to add onto my home stereo

i chucked so many tapes away recently. i figured they were null and void. There isn't much you can do with them as the quality of them is so bad and would be even worse if you were to try and turn them into mp3/wav. alot of them were originals as well.

my question is what kind of tape player would you use to get the best quality rip from them? As good as the classic Technics stereo system is or even a Marantz you still wont be able to get that damn 'hiss' out of there.
But again that 'hiss' is as classic as the snap crackle and pop from Vinyl.

lol, good point. mainly i was referring to a few long gaps of silence before/after some of the tape sides. def don't mind the hiss, myself- haha.

The Nakamichi Dragon is regarded as one of the best decks out there. Now if you can find / afford one is a different story.

The last one that sold on eBay went for £840. Bit out of my league for a second hand tape player!

ZOMG drool. I could have scored a nakamichi once, but didn't have the money on me. When I came back it was sold already :blank:
