Desk is made of a kitchen counter from ikea, supported by a brace in the back and an ikea cabinet on the left. The right side is a 4x2 exedit on its side with the coffin on the top. On each side of my monitors are floor standing dvd storage shelves from ikea. The top shelf and dioder led lights are from there as well. Come to think of it, the window shade, yep... got it there too ;)

took three expidet bookshelves. bolted two together for a stand, made and stained a shelf, painted some steel pipe and brackets, and mounted the puck lights.

Probably 34"-36" as I estimate. If so, just the right height.

Actually it should be 39 7/8" by adding the dimensions of the parts used. That's a little bit too high for me.

the only thing i would do different is place the speakers a bit further away, i would even put them at one side of the room and let the sound travel a few foot before it reaches my ears. i find its easier to hear that way. but maybe thats just me :)

I love your setup. Can you please tell us which table top you used, the height, and how you attached it to the expedit? Also did you use two expedit bookcases? Because that table top wouldn't fit on one.

This is exactly what I'm trying to build because it looks like two Technics will fit up there battle style, and there looks like room to attach a shelf if needed.

Yeah i totally understand where you are coming from but space is actually quite limited in my room as i have a studio desk and also my bed and Tv etc as it's my bedroom. If i could i would have them higher and further away. :)

I used the 4X4 expedit in black brown http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103088/ combined with both shelves from the lack tv unit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20105341/

Saw it on one of the ikea hack websites, the lack shevles are the exact width as the expedit, the length is 23' so you get a little overhang which is perfect for me since i focus on more of the "production" side of music so the more space the better, i also used both lack shelves since the combined height with the expedit bookshelf is 35'. I used liquid nails to combine the lack shelves to the expedit and recently i sanded them down and painted them twilight purple with a coat of polycrylic http://www.minwax.com/wood-products/interior-clear-protective-finishes/minwax-polycrylic-protective-finish

I'll post a picture of them tonight.

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n281/discoangelDENNIS/f052334f.jpgsorry about the lack of info.I was very tired after taking 50 photo's,and they all came out as crap.the photo's doesn't lend the unit, any justice...anyway,Estacy is correct  it is 2x2 Expedit, and a 2x4 Expedit on it's side.the top part is a Billy Bookcase with an extension sitting on top of the the Expedits on it's back.i used two LittLite L-3/12 - 12" Flexible Gooseneck Light w/ Dimmer (expensive at $65.). the total dimensions are 90"(L) x 15 1/2" (D) x 42"(H).I had a little trouble with the Billy book case.it is a slight wider (a half inch), than the Expedit.so it tend to move around , I didn't bother with bolting it down to the Expedit's.the weight of all the records, and the entire unit sitting up against the wall, tends too hold the unit in place.also I had to re-align the shelve to make all the spacing 13".the backing that came with the Billy bookcase was quite filmsy.so I had to replaced it with boarding.all in all,I am happy with the results.:D

Want to put the tables battle style but not getting another bookcase, rather just get a lack tv bench, vika amon top or more better fabricate my own to flush mount the mixer and tables. Picked up some capita slanted legs and the lack shelf but not sure how sturdy it will be screwing into the expedit.

Anyone seen anything at ikea that might be used for floor monitor stands? Been thinking about moving my speakers off the top shelf of my desk to make room for a second pc display, as well as decoupling the monitors from the wall behind them so started looking at stands. Most are ~100 for the very cheap ones and they look like crap so was hopin ikea might have something workable

I haven't seen anything and I'd be surprised to be honest. I thought about getting some tall thin standalone shelving units to put monitors on but in the end I bolted some Capita legs to my desk instead.

I still need to take pictures but I built a new stand a couple of months ago combining an Expedit, Lack TV table and angled Capita legs for the monitors

so far all ive found online that seems usable is to take 2 vika legs per stand and screw them into various shelves/cutting boards, which seems sturdy enough, just not sure if they got anything better to check out yet

Actually just found some based off of using an ikea shoe rack that look sturdier and even more do-able

they are sefour x60 speaker stands mated with b-tech ultimate wall mount brackets. the plates that came with the sefours were massive and looked stupid with the small speakers so i took my old wall mount brackets and modded them to fit on the sefours. i fixed them to the table just using self tap screws on the side with the pre drilled holes in the brackets, ill take some more photos of them for you to show it better. the monitors are alesis m1 actives they are ok for the price but i suppose some people may want louder, my girlfriend however doesnt want krk rokits destroying our neighbourhood relations:)

A lot of people used to use the Jerker. The shelf was too deep really but customising it was simple. And it gets bonus points for not being made from cardboard like most things they sell. I'm not sure if they make it anymore though.

as far as I know, LCD. They had 'led' before, but it wasn't an LED backlit screen or high-resolution LED, so it looked pretty basic. This is going to pump out high-def TV quality visualizations.. I'll come back with pics come saturday

and yeah, the event is sponsored by KIA canada, and red/white is their brand colours.. definitely looks good in the light with the high gloss red

I went ahead and put together Hi Def's setup today. The only tricky part was that the threaded studs on the Capita brackets were not long enough to go through the bookshelf top to secure a nut. So I went to Home Depot and bought (4) 3/8x3" hex bolts and some washers and threaded those in to the Capita pieces.

I'm sorry, but I really don't understand why people buy Expedit shelf for CDJs. Expedit is pretty much perfect for records, but totally useless otherwise imo due its poor build quality.

Thanks guys, though it was all Hi-Def. I just thought some red bits in there would spice it up :)

LJay - I have TTs and some records too (not enough to fill the Expedit), but depending where I keep the setup, it will just be good storage. Also, the height is great when paired with the counter top and risers so that may be another reason why the Expedit is being used.

they are adding posts and such to it to actually make it work as a dj booth/stand. if you had actually looked through the pictures you perhaps could understand that? I think they look great, IDK about stability but they look grand. Shipping from Ikea for something like that is so expensive, I want to build something like that...the nearest Ikea is in Atlanta, not too bad of a drive, when I am in GA. I may have to go to Ikea to take a look soon.

I think it's fine. The Expedit is hefty enough, but the countertop is solid. Might be a different story if you mounted the counter so it was really hanging over the front edge, but I centered it over the bookshelf.

I have a question about the Ikea stainless steel legs. I get that you screw them at the bottom but what about at the top. Do you just glue it? How do you mount it without having a screw come out of the top side of your upper shelf?

novadnb
06-22-2012, 08:01 PM
The screws supplied with the angled legs are short enough to not come through the counter top. If you picked a thinner top you might have to measure to make sure the screws aren't too long. The top piece/laptop stand legs screw into the underside of the shelf, and nothing on the other side. They're just furniture risers, so the top shelf just rests on the main counter top.

im afraid i wouldnt have enough room. i have 2 tt, a mixer, speakers, laptop and a fucking huge 1970s shit to power my speakers. I am planning on getting some monitors but until then i dont think this will work for me. The table I have now is right at about....5 feet long.

I have TTs also and I thought about extending the space, but with the room I have I figured I'd just swap out the CDJs for TTs when I want to spin them. You might be able to use another smaller Expedit (I think they have a 2x2) to put the TTs on. I don't know if they offer smaller counter tops. Liam's post on the first page is a great setup for everything if you have the room - but I'm not sure if it would be as tall as I would want.

EDIT: You could get the large counter top and use one big and one small Expedit to take up the length?

Synergy

I will find out how long my units are for you guys later on I'm not at home. But I think it may be around 6ft. I'm also 6ft tall and find the height of my stuff ok. It's not as tall as I would like it but I'm quite limited with my sloping roof. I don't have to hunch my back. But you can get legs to raise the height that little extra but that would have caused a problem for me hence why I haven't done it.

Hope this helps guys.

When you guys put in the IKEA slanted capital legs do you drill a big enough hole in the base to just slid it in or is there a way to screw it into the base and into the leg at the same time?

novadnb
06-24-2012, 10:47 PM
The round base (I'm assuming that's what you're talking about) isn't threaded. The bottom of the slanted leg is threaded but only for about 1/4". The piece you have to drill for is actually a threaded stud welded to a big washer. Please forgive the MS Paint drawing (since I had to use a touchpad..) but hopefully that answers your question. Since the threaded stud that came with the legs were too short to reach through the top of the bookshelf, I had to use regular bolts. The end of the bolt passes through the threaded section in the bottom of the slanted leg and just goes into the hollow portion of the leg.

In the picture, the red lines are the screws that attach the top of the leg to whatever.

Sorry i didnt explain myself very well. When talking about the base i mean the top of the bookshelf (in my case its just a plank of wood).

My problem is with the big washer plate and stud/bolt assembly. My drill bit makes a hole only big enough so that i have the screw the washer/stud assembly through this hole but to do it i have to take it off the slanted leg. Its pretty much impossible to screw it into the base and the leg at the same time.

Hence i was wondering if people just drill a big enough hole to slide that bolt through it while still attached to the leg or whether there is a crafty way of screwing it into the base/board and leg at the same time.

My fear with making a hole big enough for it to slide through (as opposed to being screwed into) is that it will impact overall stability of the shelf.

This is the best IKEA modification I've seen for records! I especially like the top portion where you can go through your records as if you were in the record shop! Exactly what did you use to create your record stand?

novadnb

swine - yep, I used everything from this post (http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?105-Post-your-Ikea-creations-here&p=2567&viewfull=1#post2567) except the headphone hooks.

MeowMix - You'd only have to screw the bottom of the washer assembly into the base if the base was threaded. Why not drill for the bolt diameter and secure on the bottom of the base (bookshelf top) with nuts and washers? I secured the slanted legs to the counter first, then lowered the assembled legs into the holes in the top of the bookshelf. Then secure with hardware underneath. Hope I'm understanding you right haha.

MeowMix

Yea thats what i ended up doing. I couldnt drill the width of the stud because my drill bit wasnt big enough but fortunately i found a tracer bit and widened the holes enough to have it go through.

I will post picks once i have it ready in the next few days.

Some questions regarding the Ikea Expedits

1) how many records can you get into each compartment leaving some flicking space?

2) Are all the compartments the same size on the expedits? If not is it better to get smaller units and stack them on top of each other rather than buying a big one like THIS (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80208652/)?

3)Also would there be a stability issue stacking them on top of each other or filling up a really big unit with records if they are all the same size?

as far as I know, LCD. They had 'led' before, but it wasn't an LED backlit screen or high-resolution LED, so it looked pretty basic. This is going to pump out high-def TV quality visualizations.. I'll come back with pics come saturday

and yeah, the event is sponsored by KIA canada, and red/white is their brand colours.. definitely looks good in the light with the high gloss red

any update on those pics? curious to see this setup?

About 94 records with flicking space.

The expedits all had the same size compartment.

Have been partial to the medium 4x4 compartment one over the 5x5 one just due to the weight of all of the records. Have seen pictures of them stacked as well.

I was going to do this with a 4x4 along with the wheels but when I talked to the Ikea guy he was like those wheels will not hold up especially for heavier loads. And to think of it the expedit is pretty flimsy. How's it holding up for you? Like have you moved it around with it not ripping the wheels off?

its solid... i wouldnt move it with the table top on though.. the wheels are super strong... they come attatched with a bar running accross the bottom for extra stability...

i got the idea from the Chinese ikea advert which shows the book shelf actually with the wheels on and dj kit on the top...

in some countries you can actually buy the expedit with the wheels attached..

its all good and it doesn't wobble ;)

This is not entirely Ikea but id think it still qualifies.

Had the speakers sitting in storage and figured would be great legs. The pieces of wood between the two boards i bought from Lowes and spray painted with flat black paint (although in retrospect i should have gone with semi-gloss). The separation between the two boards raises it just to the perfect height for me so that i dont have to bend over the decks and also gives me space to put the headphones and records in while mixing. All the ikea stuff was bought AS IS so it all comes out to about $30.

The LED light is an American Audio one, if i had to do it again id get the Ikea LEDs that go for 39.99 each.

The Techs are custom MK2 with matte black paint and custom refurbish and tune up done by djlotus. He really did an amazing job and i like how it blends into the desk color tone (will post setup in action pics later).

The £20 Ikea CDJ Stand...

After having wooden stands and spacetek stands and all sorts for my CDJs i wanted something that can hold 3 CDJ 2000s flush together in the middle of the mixing area above my 1210s. After some investigation and a find on another website, I came out with this.

All I need to do is spray the tray and fittings Black as they are currently white, and cut the poles down as they are a bit high. But in all i'm very pleased.

I have an expedit unit and at the moment my speakers are on a long shelf above the unit.
I was looking into getting a shelf to attatch to the expedit so I could move around the unit if needs be and possible get some larger speakers.
I have noticed a lot of people using the angled capital legs and i was wondering how easy they are to mount onto the expedit unit-will i require additional parts or not?
Edit: Just seen the manual for the legs and its answered my question :teef:

My almost all Ikea DJ room/office. More Pics Here (http://www.djforums.com/forums/showthread.php?47-Post-pics-of-your-setup-2-0-part-1/page141)

Consist of a 5 x 5 Expedit for record storage, Micke Desk, Lack Coffee Table and a non Ikea desk and this custom DJ workstation.

http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv67/DJ_Squared/My%20Set-up/DSC01027.jpg

I wanted something different from all of the Expedit workstations that I have seen on here. The workstation is made from:

2 x Vika Alex storage cabinets http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60192826/
1 x Vika Amon Table Top (47" x 25") http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60117016/
1 x Lack Wall Self (43") http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10159099/
1 x Capita 4" legs (4 per box) http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20049538/#/20054563
1 x Capita Bracket http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40051196/
3 x Signum Cable Outlet Kit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90171484/

Here are close ups of the Vika Alex storage cabinets. They come with one self with pegs that allow you to set the self at almost any height that you want. Since as you can see I am using one cabinet to store my gig backpack, the second unit has both shelves in it to allow more storage. On the top shelf I have the main powerstrip for the workstation, USB hub, Traktor Audio 8 box and all the excess cable. I store misc stuff on the next two levels.

http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv67/DJ_Squared/My%20Set-up/DSC01030.jpg

http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv67/DJ_Squared/My%20Set-up/DSC01029.jpg

I mounted the Lack shelf to the Table Top using the angled Capita Brackets. Three things here.

1) The Lack wall shelf is only finished on one side. If you are going to be against a wall this is not an issue, but as my workstation is in the middle of the room, this becomes an issue. I simply use 3" white gaff tape to cover the unfinished side.

2) As part of the mounting system for the Lack shelf, there are two metal rods that insert into the shelf for support. It has a pre-drilled hole in it for a screw, I highly suggest that you take advantage of this and put at least one screw of the Capita bracket into this rod.

3) The Capita Bracket requires you to drill through the table for it to be bolted down. Take your time and make sure you get your measurements right on this so you don't have a bunch of holes in your nice table top.

I then mounted the Capita legs to the table top. As these are just legs, they only mount on one side. So the entire table just sits on top of the Vika Amon cabinets. I then used the Signum kit to drill cable pass through holes through everything.

http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv67/DJ_Squared/My%20Set-up/DSC01032.jpg

http://i670.photobucket.com/albums/vv67/DJ_Squared/My%20Set-up/DSC01028.jpg

One thing to be considerate of is the fact that the table top is just sitting on the Alex cabinets. So make sure you balance out anything that is on the shelf with weight on the table. In my case, the turntables are counterbalancing the weight of the Rocket speakers. One time I started to take the turntables off of the table and the whole thing started to tip backwards. Fortunately I caught it in time..

PS - You can also use the Vika Alex Drawer Unit http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10192824/ or the Vika Annefors http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40162496/ for the base as they are all the same size.

Yea the monitors are great up there when I use Traktor...but playing regular records I have to be careful because I start to get turntable feedback from the bass resonating through to the table...not sure how to isolate that without just taking them off completely.

Try a thick layer of foam underneath the monitors. Or an alternative, Tannoy used to recommend using a layer of plasticine

nice color DePen!

Question: when you painted the shelf and table top, did you have to sand them first?

DePen
01-17-2013, 09:37 PM
great question. i used ikea's white tabletop which, in itself, is acrylic paint. so it took to spray paint well (i just apparently cannot spraypaint well) the metalic has a shine in it.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41fRnDOvSkL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

i'll warn you:first coat should be light. my girl wanted to come with on the ride to ikea, and naturally wanted to paint. she went a little heavy around the edges.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/544057_837764107158_166707363_n.jpg

i had to stand off the extra to get an even surface to the surface. anticipate 2 coats to cover the white, 3 coats to get it even, and i used a glossy clear sealer (spray paint) otherwise you'll keep getting blue paint on your hands everything you touch the top.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/735174_837935967748_1076966340_n.jpg

worth it? yes. would i do it again? no. probably would get the chrome tabletop nexttime

DePen
01-17-2013, 09:47 PM
yes. probably not reccommended, but you really have to go light, let it dry, put a second coat on, let it dry. slow and steady was key

i was really worried that it wasn't going to work in the end

Very cleannnn setup..... Perfect color. It's too bad that a lot a lot of creations with parts from ikea ain't sold here in holland...... And your rane mixer with the staton's. But you're ain't ready brushing yet....as i watch the difference ince in darker and lighter blue on the right side..... I onve painted my kitchen which was light blue and it had to become creamy colored... That took 2 times for grounding(grounding made in the same color) and 4 times with the paint itself...... And that was no cheap
paint. And spraying if more difficult....depening on the onderground and lightfall and offcourse experience. But what they say on the spray etc. of how many layers how need, you usually can multiply times 2.... But the setup is very good...one of the best and cleanest so far and i know that they have the book shell and the upperdecks i can make out of mdf.....thx for the pictures.......

I like the bookshelves eveybody is using, but i read somewhere a couple of pages back that it's crappy... I try to find the right words for it it(dutch), is it made of not solid wood, but hardboard, with a vinyl layer?.... Compressed wooodsnippers?.
i know use a older model from the ikea, with to metal standards with holes in it where you can put it one big peace of wood below and a smaller one on top on different heights... pro:solid , variable height neg: not very pretty.
But you don't see ikea selling those types anymore.....; Their quite easu expandable with al the whole in the metal... Just buy Two wooden plates with two metal standards and you have room for extra gear....(monitors). But it doesn't look very clean... It's just a bureau, but then again, i can always buy the records shelves you are using and put it benath it.....for placing little gear and getting ridding of a lot of cables in site.... it stays difficult.gr.richard

Sorry, nothing too advanced here. I didn't really make them from scratch either, but I did put them together lol Disregard the mess too, just moved into a new house. This what you see here is going to be my dedicated studio and chill room for me and some friends.

The ikea table is dark wood with red legs. The table is a decent size (I want to say 40 something inches across), only cost about 50 USD to make 40ish for the table and the legs were 2.50 a piece. The shelves were also cheap too. Wood was 3 a piece, and then 10 per set of metal hangers. All in all, I think I got a decent workspace for now with under 100 bucks.

that waste basket and light are also ikea too. $2 for the basket and $5 for the lamp. Waste basket is big and the light works great late at night. Can't be it.

Very very simple booth, but extremely functional
http://i.imgur.com/UCu3EwW.jpg
basically its a 150x75cm tabletop, the legs are the only model that go this high (94cm)
The legs screw right in place, pre drilled holes. The other side is attached to the wall with some L brackets and some small corner brackets along the beige closet to prevent sagging. The whole thing is mounted a few cm from the closet to allow for cables (they are neater now than in the picture)
Old expedit on the right for storage

I've been down to Ikea last week and manged to find the book case.

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S19903848/

but i'm alittle unsure about the table top.

I notice one of the guys on here had a red one which looked really nice. I'm wondering if it was bought that way or painted?
If so could any of you's post a link to help me with this?
above are the ideas i've come up with as well but i just want to make sure i get it right. Even just about how much it cost for the table top would narrow it down for me.

also what would you call the bits between the book case and the table top.

I like the top plate and the cut out for the cup holder is boarder line awesome (only boarder line because I'm not sure if I would want to encourage drinks near the system but then they will probably have them any ways so nice to have a "safe" place to put it.) I also like the built in laptop stand. But I find it interesting that you decided to block in the CD slot (or is it just a bad angle?).

Current setup:

http://i.imgur.com/U8DLSt2.jpg
2 x cdj 900 nxs
Djm 600
2 x krk rokit 5

1 Expedit bookshelf
4 x capita legs (these are however just attached by the tiny screws that were included...Have to remedy this) Also thinking about adding another two capita legs in the middle of the shelf since Im under the impression the whole thing is going to break in the middle due to the weight of the cdjs, mixer and monitors...What do you guys think?

To add:
2 x sultan legs to raise the monitors
2 x wooden boards tor the monitors to stand on
2 x vibration mats for the monitors

I bought a few of these https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31LzMxIlL6L.jpg and I plan to stack them to store vinyl and then put the turntables on top.

Used only the angled Capita legs from Ikea for the monitors, the rest is custom build.

Really tempted to have a shot at making some Ikea salad bowl speakers.
Full build cost is more than some cheap second hand speakers, and I'm sure any pro speaker designer would have kittens looking at a spherical design...
But, meh, the missus likes spherial speakers, we already have an old rubbish pair. It could be an interesting project.

He really did an amazing job and i like how it blends into the desk color tone (will post setup in action pics later).

those of you who are using these legs in between the kallax and the tabletop, are you screwing the legs in on both ends or are they just simply resting on the unit below?
