I closed the other thread so we can narrow the focus a bit. Not ruling out IRC, we're just keeping an open mind to all the options out there.

We're looking into different options for bring the forum chat back. There are a lot of 'em, from IRC clients, to custom chat software, to shoutboxes built into the software. The point of this thread is to help get a bead on the features people want to see and then go from there.

There are a few things we are gunning for for sure, but I'm curious what features are important to the people who will be using the chat.

A collaborative place for DJF members to see who is there and to be able to virtually chat it up with em.

....so....anything really works for me personally

Whatever we can have soonest! Doesn't matter if its crap... crappiness was 85% of the old Flashchat's charm!

The old flashchat wasn't a problem for me. I just ask that we not add any more shortcuts so that lal = I eat poop or whatever it used to say when I logged on

+1 on mobile if possible, but simple is key i think, flashy features are not needed. just a basic chat, has to be better than using facebook chat like we do now.

I still prefer IRC. There are apps for android and iPhone for IRC clients.

Guys, I got some license available as a chat for the vBulletin forum as well. I don't use the license anymore, so you're able to use it! ;)

I think a chat room would be pretty cool.

I would suggest something as open and available as possible. IRC would be a good alternative, you could join from on the site to connecting with an external, native client. I would love a DJF chat when I'm on the go with just my phone, and Flash is not ideal in that case.

Greedy bastards. I think we should have to handwrite our chats and send them to everyone. Get some respect in hurrr

I personally would like to see the chat be IRC based. You could use a custom java chat on the website for people who don't have IRC clients while those of us who do have them can log in without having to worry about a browser client. This also means you'd have more people idling which is a good thing because it will promote actual activity in the chat and you'll likely see a good number of people using it at all times.

Plus, there are a lot of mobile based IRC clients out there that are actually decent. AndChat for Android is what I use.

Preferably something non-flash based due to Apples lack of support. I'll have a talk to a guy I know who used to work at vBulletin for ideas...

FB style chat system. Works with Vbulletin, although i'm not sure of the version it works for.

We could simply use FWR's chat on Ustream. It's IRC based and open to anyone. It also has the added benefit of being able to see when a DJ is broadcasting...

I actually liked the old chat system... It was easy, accessible and was a part of the site instead of navigating away from the site :)
